Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Scam, or folklore? on 2G case verdict"
- Scam - a dishonest plan, especially for getting money
- Folklore - a body of popular myths or beliefs relating to a particular place, activity, or group of people
- Verdict - an official judgment made in a court
- Acquittal - an official judgment in a court of law that someone is not guilty of the crime they were accused of
- Narrative - a story, or an account of something that has happened
- Offence - a crime or illegal activity for which there is a punishment
- Perspective - a sensible way of judging how good, bad, important etc something is in comparison with other things
- Arbitrary - used about actions that are considered to be unfair
- Tenure - the period of time during which someone has an important job or is an elected official
- En masse - all together as a group
- Acquittal - an official judgment in a court of law that someone is not guilty of the crime they were accused of
- Arraign - to order someone to go to a court of law to be formally charged with a crime
- In tatters - in very bad condition
- Adduce - to give a particular fact as proof that something is true
- Manipulate - to influence someone, or to control something, in a clever or dishonest way
- First-come, first-served - used for saying that if you arrive before other people you will be served or dealt with before them
- Windfall - an amount of money that you get when you are not expecting it, especially a large amount
- Offloading - to get rid of something that you do not want by giving or selling it to someone else
- Stake - the part of a business that you own because you have invested money in it
- Ally - someone who is ready to help you, especially against someone else who is causing problems for you
- Perception - the ability to understand and make good judgments about something
- Irredeemable - impossible to change or make better
- Beset - to cause someone difficulty or danger over a period of time
- Reiterate - to repeat something in order to emphasize it or make it very clear to people
- Tainted - something that is tainted is spoilt by an unpleasant feature or quality that often makes people not want to be involved with it
- Impact - an effect, or an influence
- Comptroller - someone whose job is to look after the financial aspects of an organization
- Auditor - someone whose job is to officially examine the financial records of a company, organization, or person to see that they are accurate
- Notional - existing only as an idea, not as something real
- Telephony - the system, technology, or business of telephone communication
- Vindicate - to prove that someone who was accused of a crime or dishonest act is not guilty
- Saga - a story about what happens to a group of characters over a long period of time
- Perception - a particular way of understanding or thinking about something
- Trial - the process of examining a case in a court of law and deciding whether someone is guilty or innocent
- Sift - to examine information, documents etc in order to find what you are looking for
- Graft - dishonest or illegal activities in politics or business that involve giving people money or advantages in exchange for their help or support
- Allegation - a statement that someone has done something wrong or illegal even though this has not been proved
- Diligent - someone who is diligent works very hard and very carefully
- Take a beating - to be damaged because of performing badly or being criticized
- Calling out - to criticize someone about something they have said or done and challenge them to explain it
- Waning - if a feeling or power wanes, it becomes weaker or less important
- Pursuing - to try to reach a solution or decision
- Redeem - to improve something that is not very good by including something that is good
- Contention - an opinion or statement that something is true, especially one made during a discussion or argument
- Arguably - used for stating your opinion or belief, especially when you think other people may disagree
- Tad - little bit
- Breezily - in a lively and confident way that can seem careless
- Quid pro quo - something that you offer or give to someone in return for something that they have offered or given you
- Incidence - the number of times something happens, especially something bad

- Coalition - a temporary union of different political parties that agree to form a government together
- Conservative - not willing to accept much change, especially in the traditional values of society
- Sobering - making you think about things in a serious way
- Persistent - continuing to exist, especially for longer than you would like
- Populist - representing the interests and opinions of ordinary people
- Upsurge - a sudden increase in something
- Eurosceptic - someone, especially a politician, who thinks that their country should not be part of the European Union
- Immigrant - someone who comes to live in a country from another country
- Chancellor - the leader of the government in some countries, for example Germany and Austria
- Erosion - the gradual reduction or destruction of something important
- Embrace - to completely accept something such as a new belief, idea, or way of life
- Islamophobic - related to hatred or fear of Muslims and Islam
- Portfolio - all the responsibilities of a government minister
- Vital - very important, necessary, or essential
- Immigration - the process in which people enter a country in order to live there permanently
- Affinity - a natural understanding and sympathy between people
- Ostracise - to stop accepting someone as a member of a group and refuse to talk or listen to them
- Unsurprisingly - in a way that you expected
- Emphasise - to give particular importance or attention to something
- Explicit - said or explained in an extremely clear way, so that you cannot doubt what is meant
- Referendum - an occasion when everyone in a country can vote to make a decision about one particular subject
- Obvious - clear to almost anyone
- Contradiction - a difference in two or more statements, ideas, stories etc that makes it impossible for both or all of them to be true
- Impede - to make it more difficult for someone to do something or more difficult for something to happen
- Legitimacy - the fact that something is legal
