Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Transit gambit: on e-way bill mechanism for transport of goods"
  • Transit - the activity or process of moving someone or something from one place to another
  • Gambit - a clever action in a game or other situation that is intended to achieve an advantage and usually involves taking a risk
  • Ease - to make or become less severe, difficult, unpleasant, painful, etc
  • Grapple with - to try hard to understand a difficult idea or to solve a difficult problem
  • Anxious - worried because you think something bad might happen
  • Roll-out - to introduce a new product or service

  • Consignment - an amount of goods that are delivered

  • Compliance - the practice of obeying a law, rule, or request
  • Inter-State - existing or taking place between states
  • Intra-State - existing or happening within one state
  • Exempt - allowed to ignore something such as a rule, obligation, or payment
  • Designated - marked, separated, or given a name for a particular purpose
  • Intercept - to stop, catch, or take control of someone or something before they can get to the place they are going to
  • Conveyance - a vehicle
  • Staggered - very surprised and shocked
  • Concern - a feeling of worry about something, especially one that a lot of people have about an important issue
  • Inflow - an amount of something such as money or goods that comes into a place
  • Plummet - if something such as an amount, rate, or value plummets, it suddenly becomes much lower
  • Substantive - large in amount, degree, or strength
  • Shortfall - a lack of something that you need or want, or the amount that you lack
  • Dilemma - a situation in which you have to make a difficult decision
  • Invoice - a document giving details of goods or services that someone has bought and must pay for
  • Evasion - the practice of avoiding doing something that you should do
  • Bump up - to increase something
  • Plugging - to fill a hole so that nothing can get through it
  • Glitch - a small and sudden problem
  • Nervousness - feeling excited and worried, or slightly afraid
  • Onerous - something that is onerous is something that you dislike or worry about because it is very difficult to deal with

  • Exception - someone or something that is not included in a rule, group, or list or that does not behave in the expected way

  • Boom - a period of sudden economic growth, especially one that results in a lot of money being made
  • Romp home - to win something such as a race or competition very easily
  • Pollster - a person who does opinion polls
  • Robust - strong and successful
  • Meagre - (of amounts or numbers) very small or not enough
  • Ascribe something to someone / something - to consider something to be caused, created, or owned by someone or something
  • Ticklish - a ticklish situation is one that needs to be dealt with carefully
  • Magnate - a person who is very rich and successful in business or industry
  • Enact - to put something into action, especially to make something law
  • Sizeable - large
  • Splinter group - a small organization, typically a political party, that has broken away from a larger one
  • Coalition - the joining together of different political parties or groups for a particular purpose, usually for a limited time, or a government that is formed in this way
  • Manoeuvre - a cleverly planned action that is intended to get an advantage
  • Prevailing - existing in a particular place or at a particular time
  • Mining - the industry or activity of removing substances such as coal or metal from the ground by digging
  • Lobby - an action such as a protest or meeting which is intended to influence politicians
  • Capitalise - to supply money to a business so that it can develop or operate as it should
  • Export - to send goods to another country for sale
  • Walk a tightrope - if you walk/tread a tightrope, you have to deal with a difficult situation, especially one involving making a decision between two opposing plans of action
  • Upwardly mobile - moving or able to move to a higher social class, for example by becoming richer
  • Consolidation - the action or process of making something stronger or more solid
  • Electorate - all the people who are allowed to vote
  • Mired - to be involved in a difficult situation, especially for a long period of time
  • Scandal - a situation in which important people behave in a dishonest or immoral way that shocks people
  • Plummet - to fall very quickly and suddenly
