Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Accident-prone: the apathy over enforcing road safety rules"
- Accident-prone - likely to hurt yourself or break something as a result of an accident
- Apathy - a feeling of having no interest in or enthusiasm about anything, or of not being willing to make any effort to change things
- Enforcing - to make sure that a law or rule is obeyed by people
- Zero tolerance - a policy of punishing people for even very minor offences by using the law in a very strict way
- Violation - an action that is in opposition to a law, agreement, principle etc
- Administrative - relating to the management of a company, organization, or institution
- Dramatic - sudden and surprising or easy to notice
- In spite of something - used for referring to a fact that makes something else surprising
- Amicus curiae - an impartial adviser to a court of law in a particular case
- Bureaucracy - a complicated and annoying system of rules and processes
- Formalisation - to make something such as a plan, system, or agreement official
- Audit - a careful examination of something
- Reform - a change that is intended to correct a situation that is wrong or unfair, or make a system work more effectively
- Road map - a plan or set of instructions that makes it easier for someone to do something
- Accountable - in a position where people have the right to criticize you or ask you why something happened
- Hazardous - dangerous, especially to people’s health or safety
- Prosecute - to officially accuse someone of committing a crime in a law court
- Carriageway - one side of a major road, used by vehicles travelling in the same direction
- Merely - only / just
- Proportionate - correct or suitable in size, amount, or degree when considered in relation to something else
- Minor - very small / not very important
- Indifference - lack of interest or sympathy

- Fragile - easy to break or damage
- Momentum- progress or development that is becoming faster or stronger
- Slowdown - a period when there is less activity
- Fiscal - relating to money and financial matters, especially taxes
- Preceding - existing or coming immediately before someone or something else
- Reversal - a change in something, so that it becomes the opposite of what it was
- Noteworthy - worth giving special attention or praise to
- Revival - the process of becoming active, successful, or popular again
- Coterminous - exactly the same as something else
- Roll-out - to introduce a new product or service
- Vanguard - the people who introduce and develop new ways of thinking, new technologies etc
- Anaemic - weak or not effective
- Significantly - by a large amount, or in a way that is easily noticeable
- Statistic - a group of numbers that represent facts or that describe a situation
- Factor in - to include a particular amount or factor when you calculate something
- Quasi - partly
- Lion’s share - the largest part of something
- Concern - a feeling of worry about something
- Headwind - a wind that blows in the opposite direction to the one in which you are moving
- Slump - to be suddenly reduced to a much lower level
- Forestry - the science of caring for forests, and the trees and other plants that grow in them
- Contributor - someone or something that is one of the causes of a situation, event etc
- Impact - an effect, or an influence
- Overstate - to talk about something in a way that makes it seem more important, impressive, or serious than it really is
- Portend - to be a sign or warning of something that will happen
- Resurgence - the start of something again that quickly increases in influence, effect etc
- Inflationary - relating to or likely to cause an increase in prices
- Household - the people who live in a house or flat when they are considered as a single unit
- Stubborn - very difficult to change or to defeat
- Rut - a situation that is boring and difficult to change
- Appreciably - enough to be noticed or considered important
- Drastically - in a way that is likely to have a strong or far-reaching effect
- Fiscal deficit - a fiscal deficit occurs when a government's total expenditures exceed the revenue that it generates
- Mettle - the determination and ability to deal with problems and difficult situations
