International Current Affairs
  • India was among the 128 countries which voted in favour of a resolution rejecting the US' recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital at the 193-member United Nations General Assembly's meeting today. 
    • India has traditionally been in support of an independent Palestine as part of a two-state solution of the conflict between Israel and Palestine, both of which claim Jerusalem.
    • Note : US President Donald Trump had earlier threatened to cut aid to countries which vote against the US move. 
  • The UK is going to switch from burgundy to blue coloured passports after the country leaves the European Union. 
    • The blue cover, which was first used in 1921, will be issued from October 2019.
    • Passport Colors of Some Major Countries :
    • Red - Members of European Union (EU), Turkey, China, Serbia, Russia, Poland and Colombia
    • Blue - India, America, Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, 15 Caribbean countries of the CARICOM (Caribbean Community and Common Market)
    • Green - Islamic countries including Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Morocco, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Senegal
    • Black - Zambia, Congo, Chad, Malawi, New Zealand
  • New Zealand has signed an agreement of understanding with local tribes to give Mount Taranaki the same legal rights as a person
    • The new status of the mountain means any harm to it will be legally treated as harm to the tribe.
    • Important Note : The stratovolcano is the third geographic feature in New Zealand which has been granted a legal personality after Te Urewera national park and  Whanganui River.
National Current Affairs
  • Today (22nd December) is National Mathematics Day.
    • India observe this day to commemorate 131th birthday of great Indian Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan who made extraordinary contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions.
    • He compiled more than 3900 mathematical results and equations.
    • On his 125th birth anniversary in 2011, India declared the birthday of Ramanujan, 22 December, as 'National Mathematics Day' and the year 2012 was celebrated as the National Mathematics Year.
  • Rajasthan government approved 1% reservation for members of the Gujjar communityand four other backward castes
    • Important Note : The allotment of 1% completes the 50% limit for reservations in Rajasthan.
  • Uttar Pradesh is going to set up cow sanctuaries in all 75 districts of the state. 
Science & Technology
  • The world's first-ever detection of two neutron stars colliding, which revealed the origin of heavy elements like gold and platinum, was voted as the scientific breakthrough of the year 2017 by the journal 'Science'. 
New Appointments
  • Vijay Rupani is going to swear in as the Chief Minister of Gujarat for a second term.
    • Nitin Patel has been named for the post of Deputy Chief Minister.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Saudi Arabia today paid 2 billion riyals (over ₹3,400 crore) to half of the kingdom's population under a new welfare scheme for low and middle-income families
    • Bank transfers were made to approximately 3 million families, reaching around 10.6 million beneficiaries.
    • While the maximum payment was ₹16,000, the minimum was around ₹5,000.
  • Baba Ramdev promoted Patanjali has been ranked as India's most trusted Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) brand for the year 2017, according to the Brand Trust Report India Study 2017.  
  • Airtel Payments Bank Managing Director and CEO Shashi Arora has quit the company after nearly a 12-year stint with the Sunil Mittal-led Bharti Airtel group. 
Sports Current Affairs
  • The Indian men's football team has ended the year 2017 at the 105th position in the latest FIFA rankings, which is its best year-end ranking in the last 24 years
    • Note : World Cup holders Germany ended the year as the number one team.
