Example: The recently-concluded 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China was an intricately choreographed political theatre which showcased President Xi Jinping’s primacy, his vision and his status as the helmsman of the party and the nation.

1. Intricate [in-tri-kit]
Adjective: having many interrelated parts or facets; entangled or involved; complex; complicated; hard to understand, work, or make.

2. Choreograph [kawr-ee-uh-graf, -grahf, kohr-]
Verb: to provide the choreography for; to manage, maneuver, or direct.
Verb: to work as a choreographer.

3. Primacy [prahy-muh-see]
Noun: the state of being first in order, rank, importance, etc.
Synonyms: domination, authority, command, power, prelacy.

4. Helmsman [helmz-muh n]
Noun: a person who steers a ship.
Synonyms: pilot, steersman, wheelman.

Example: His vision for the future of China, “Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era”, is enshrined in the party constitution as part of its guiding ideology.

5. Enshrine [en-shrahyn]
Verb: to enclose in or as in a shrine; to cherish as sacred.
Synonyms: cherish, consecrate, preserve, revere, apotheosize, bless, dedicate, embalm, exalt, hallow, idolize, sanctify, treasure.
Antonyms: condemn, desecrate, defile, disrespect.

Example: A Xinhua commentary gushingly suggests that “Xi Jinping’s thought will be China’s signature ideology and the new communism”, the implication being that it supersedes and encompasses the doctrinal offerings of previous leaders.

6. Gush [guhsh]
Verb: to flow out or issue suddenly, copiously, or forcibly, as a fluid from confinement; to express oneself extravagantly or emotionally; talk effusively.
Noun: a sudden, copious outflow of a fluid; the fluid emitted.

7. Ideology [ahy-dee-ol-uh-jee, id-ee-]
Noun: the body of doctrine, myth, belief, etc., that guides an individual, social movement, institution, class, or large group; such a body of doctrine, myth, etc., with reference to some political and social plan, as that of fascism, along with the devices for putting it into operation.
Synonyms: creed, culture, dogma, outlook, philosophy, theory, view, credo, ideas, principles, system, tenets.

8. Supersede [soo-per-seed]
Verb: to replace in power, authority, effectiveness, acceptance, use, etc., as by another person or thing; to set aside or cause to be set aside as void, useless, or obsolete, usually in favor of something mentioned; make obsolete.
Synonyms: annul, overrule, repudiate, set aside, supplant, usurp, abandon, desert, discard, displace, forsake, oust, outmode, reject, remove, replace.
Antonyms: keep, retain, stay, support.

9. Doctrinal [dok-truh-nl; British also dok-trahyn-l]
Adjective: of, relating to, or concerned with doctrine.
Synonyms: rigid, bigoted, bourgeois, commonplace, conforming, conservative, demure, dogmatic, drippy, hackneyed, hidebound, humdrum, illiberal, in rut, inflexible, insular, isolationist, lame, literal, moderate, moral, narrow, narrow-minded, not heretical, obstinate, parochial, pedestrian, prosaic.
Antonyms: abnormal, different, exotic, foreign.

10. Offering [aw-fer-ing, of-er-]
Noun: something offered in worship or devotion, as to a deity; an oblation or sacrifice; a contribution given to or through the church for a particular purpose, as at a religious service.
Synonyms: contribution, gift, alms, atonement, beneficence, charity, expiation, oblation, present, sacrifice.
Antonym: withdrawal.
