1.Flagship (noun)-प्रमुख, सर्वोत्कृष्ट वस्तु
Meaning: the best or most important thing owned or produced by a particular organization.
Example: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship economic agenda of demonetisation, that stunned the nation as a financial Pokhran, has been caught in the political crossfire between Mr. Modi and the Opposition from the word ‘go’.
2.Anarchy (noun)-अराजकता, कुप्रबंधन
Meaning: a state of disorder due to absence or non-recognition of authority or other controlling systems.
Synonyms: lawlessness, absence of government, nihilism, mobocracy, revolution, insurrection, riot, rebellion, mutiny, disorder, disorganization, misrule, chaos, tumult, turmoil, mayhem, pandemonium.
Example: They began a massive campaign against demonetisation and Mr. Modi. With the media feeding the Opposition with news of near financial anarchy, and in turn the Opposition feeding the news hungry media by shutting down the winter session of Parliament, and the two together creating the ecosystem in which the Supreme Court justifiably said there could be “riots”, the opponents of Mr. Modi concluded that his end was very near.
3.Derogation (noun)-अपमान, मानमर्दन
Meaning: an exemption from or relaxation of a rule or law, the perception or treatment of someone or something as being of little worth.
Example: It is settled law now that prisoners may be deprived of personal liberty according to procedure established by law, but that does not include a derogation of their right to dignity.
4.Disruptive (adjective)-विध्वंसकारक, फूट डालने वाला
Meaning: causing or tending to cause disruption, innovative or groundbreaking.
Synonyms: troublemaking, troublesome, unruly, rowdy, disorderly, undisciplined, attention-seeking, riotous, wild, turbulent.
Example: I am a critic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s demonetisation initiative not because I belong to the Opposition, but because of demonetisation’s disruptive force, especially since India’s economy includes a large, cash-dependent informal sector.
5.Perplexing (adjective)-पेचीदा
Meaning: completely baffling; very puzzling.
Example: It was perplexing that we were pouring scorn over a part of the economy that supports livelihoods for 80-90% of Indian workers and accounts for an estimated 40-50% of GDP.
6.Burgeon (verb)-फलना-फूलना, बढ़ना
Meaning: begin to grow or increase rapidly; flourish.
Synonyms: grow rapidly, increase rapidly/exponentially, expand, spring up, shoot up, swell, explode, boom, mushroom, proliferate, snowball, multiply, become more numerous, escalate, rocket.
Example: With a burgeoning youth population, India will need to create millions of jobs. This comes at a time of heightened concerns over the impact of automation on the availability of decent, well-paying, formal sector jobs.
7.Disingenuous (adjective)-कपटी, कृत्रिम
Meaning: not candid or sincere, typically by pretending that one knows less about something than one really does.
Synonyms: dishonest, deceitful, underhand, underhanded, duplicitous, double-dealing, two-faced, dissembling, insincere, false, lying, untruthful, mendacious.
Example: Certainly, as this newspaper has argued, social media can enable political echo chambers; how to manage this is something tech companies must grapple with. But to view political connectedness as an inherent threat to democratic institutions—as Rahul Gandhi has done this week in the Financial Times, one among many politicians to take this line—is both condescending and disingenuous.
8.Demarcate (verb)-सीमांकन, हदबंदी करना
Meaning: set the boundaries or limits of, separate or distinguish from.
Synonyms: separate, divide, mark (out/off), delimit, distinguish, differentiate, delineate; bound.
Example: With the two issues clearly demarcated, the first becomes more manageable. Companies like Facebook have shied away thus far from taking on direct responsibility for regulating content.
9.Blasphemy (noun)-ईश - निंदा
Meaning: the action or offence of speaking sacrilegiously about God or sacred things; profane talk.
Synonyms: profanity, profaneness, sacrilege, irreligiousness, irreverence, taking the Lord's name in vain, swearing, curse, cursing, impiety, impiousness, unholiness, desecration, disrespect.
Example: Likewise, tech companies must bring about greater transparency when it comes to ad purchases. That is perhaps akin to blasphemy for companies like Google that are funded by advertising revenue.
10.Verve (noun)-उत्साह
Meaning: vigour and spirit or enthusiasm.
Synonyms: enthusiasm, vigour, energy, pep, dynamism, go, elan, vitality, vivacity, buoyancy, liveliness, animation, sprightliness, zest, sparkle, effervescence, fizz, spirit, spiritedness, ebullience, life, dash, brio, fervour, gusto, eagerness, keenness, passion, zeal, relish.
Example: The “quadrilateral” is back, and with a verve that is making strategic pundits sit up and take notice. After reports emerged last week that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzō Abe would propose a four-way dialogue between the US, Japan, Australia and India during President Donald Trump’s visit to Tokyo this week, there is speculation in New Delhi that the new “quad” might seek to counter Chinese naval power in Asia.
