Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Coup de Grace : on Zimbabwe's political crisis"
- Coup de grâce - a final action that destroys or defeats something that was already weak or failing
- Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
- Contour - the shape of the outside edge of something
- Prolonged - continuing for a long time
- Reach boiling point - the moment when a situation becomes more serious or dangerous because people start to feel very angry
- Liberation - an occasion when something or someone is released or made free
- Brewing - if an unpleasant situation or a storm is brewing, you feel that it is about to happen
- Extravagant - spending or costing a lot of money, especially more than is reasonable
- Ambition - something that you very much want to do, usually something that is difficult to achieve
- Endorse - to express support for someone or something, especially in public
- Err - to make a mistake or to do something wrong:
- Groundswell - a sudden increase in people’s feelings about something
- Successor - someone who has an important position after someone else
- Dynasty - a family whose members rule a country or region for a long period of time
- Coup d’etat - an occasion when a group of people takes control of a country, usually by means of military force
- Condemnation - a public statement in which someone criticizes someone or something severely
- Transitional - temporary, or in the process of changing from one situation, form, or state to another
- Backfire - if a plan or idea backfires, it has the opposite effect to the one that you wanted
- Inept - someone who is inept does not have much ability or skill
- Dictatorial - telling people what to do and refusing to listen to their opinions
- Plotter - someone who makes a secret plan to do something wrong, harmful, or illegal
- Legitimacy - the fact that something is legal
- Inherit - to receive a right or an official social position that belonged to a relative who has died
- Dysfunctional - not working normally
- Massive - very large or heavy
- Coup - an occasion when a group of people takes control of a country, usually by means of military force
- Barracks - a group of buildings where members of the armed forces live and work

- Overreach - to try to do more than your ability, authority, or money will allow
- Democracy - a system of government in which people vote in elections to choose the people who will govern them
- Impropriety - behaviour that is not honest, professional, or socially acceptable
- Regime - a system or form of government
- Breach - to break a law, rule, or agreement
- Familiarise - to make someone learn or experience something so that they know about it
- Augur - to be a sign of what may happen in the future
- Enjoin - to strongly advise or order someone to do something
- Bureaucrat - someone who is employed to help run an office or government department
- Zeal - great energy, effort, and enthusiasm
- Significant - very important
- Drift - to go from one state to another without realizing it
- Autopilot - doing things without thinking about what you are doing, especially because you have done the same thing many times before
- Dissident - someone who disagrees publicly with a government, especially in a country where this is not allowed
- Vacuum - a feeling that something is missing, or a situation in which something is missing
- Foothold - a position from which you can improve your status or become more successful in an organization, profession, or market
- Prospect - the possibility that something will happen
- Speculation - ideas or discussion about why something has happened or what might happen
- Refrain from - to stop yourself from doing something. This word is often used in official announcements or signs
- Convention - a way of behaving that is generally accepted as being normal and right
