1.Precursor (noun)
Meaning: a person or thing that comes before another of the same kind; a forerunner.
Synonyms: forerunner, predecessor, forefather, father, parent, antecedent, ancestor, forebear, progenitor
Example: The top-level discussions could be a precursor to some relief measures that may be announced as early as Friday when the GST Council meets in the capital, as the discussions stretched till late evening, compelling Mr. Jaitley to skip the World Economic Forum’s India Economic Summit.

2.Culminate (verb)
Meaning: reach a climax or point of highest development.
Synonyms: come to a climax, come to a crescendo, come to a head, reach a finale, peak, climax, reach a pinnacle;
Example: A vigilance case was instituted a day later, and what followed was a series of revelations that culminated in the registration of a case by the CBI. It transpired that Gopal was actually Bhopal Balmiki, who was already employed with the Defence Ministry’s Bengal Headquarters when he got a job with the KoPT as ‘Gopal’. 

3.Amnesty (noun)
Meaning: an official pardon for people who have been convicted of political offences.
Synonyms: pardon, pardoning, reprieve, grant an official pardon to, pardon, grant an amnesty to, reprieve
Example: A subsequent tweet by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj carried the news of the amnesty, but did not mention the role played by the Chief Minister of Kerala, leading to questions about jurisdiction of the State in such matters.

4.Proximity (noun)
Meaning: nearness in space, time, or relationship.
Synonyms: closeness, nearness, presence, juxtaposition, propinquity, adjacency.
Example: The Ministry of External Affairs now has a States division, which keeps in touch with the States to assist them in building bridges with the countries in which they have a special interest on account of proximity or the presence of diaspora from that State.

5.Diaspora (noun)
Meaning: the dispersion or spread of any people from their original homeland.

6.Affinity (noun)
Meaning: a natural liking for and understanding of someone or something.
Synonyms: empathy, rapport, sympathy, accord, harmony, like-mindedness.
Example: Gone are the days when regional affinities were considered undesirable in their handling of international issues. A Foreign Secretary used to say, half in jest, that no Punjabi should deal with Pakistan and no Tamil should deal with Sri Lanka! In the new dispensation, diplomats are expected to bring their regional expertise to take the correct decisions on neighbours.

7.Solicit (verb)
Meaning: ask for or try to obtain (something) from someone.
Synonyms: ask for, request, apply for, put in for, seek, beg, plead for, sue for, crave, canvass, call for, drum up, press for.
Example: Pandit Nehru wrote letters to the Chief Ministers, explaining certain aspects of foreign policy, but did not solicit their views, though they could ask questions or make suggestions. 

8.Unflappable (adjective)
Meaning: having or showing calmness in a crisis.
Synonyms: imperturbable, unexcitable, cool, calm, collected, cool, calm, and collected, controlled, self-controlled, self-possessed, cool-headed, level-headed, relaxed, insouciant, serene, stoical, phlegmatic, unmoved

9.Mammoth (noun)
Meaning: immensely large; huge; enormous:

10.Fascination (noun)
Meaning: the power to fascinate someone; the quality of being fascinating.
Synonyms: interest, preoccupation, passion, obsession, compulsion, captivation, enchantment;
Example: Time and clocks have held a special fascination for humankind down the ages. So, it is particularly revealing that two of the three Nobel Prizes for the sciences announced this year have been linked to time.
