1.Anomalous (adjective)
Meaning: deviating from what is standard, normal, or expected.
Synonyms: abnormal, atypical, non-typical, irregular, aberrant, exceptional, freak, freakish, odd, bizarre, peculiar, unusual, out of the ordinary, inconsistent, incongruous, deviant.
Antonyms: normal, typical, regular
Example: Being diagnosed with anorexia nervosa as a heterosexual, non-athletic male felt quite anomalous to me in December 2015. Yet now it seems that my admission to a disorders centre was part of a much bigger picture.
2.Conflate (verb)
Meaning: combine (two or more sets of information, texts, ideas, etc.) into one.
Example: Conflating the two laws is inappropriate and would preclude genuine whistle-blowing in several scenarios. For instance, what about government officials who come across evidence of wrongdoing in the normal course of their work and do not need the RTI Act to access relevant information?
3.Replica (noun)
Meaning: an exact copy or model of something, especially one on a smaller scale., a duplicate of an original artistic work.
Synonyms: copy, model, duplicate, reproduction, replication.
Example: Instead, it would have been apt to have had a replica of a rocket near the statue along with a series of science books by renowned scientists.
Meaning: a severe flood.
Synonyms: flood, flash flood, torrent.
Example: The floods that have ravaged parts of eastern and western India, leaving at least 600 people dead and displacing thousands, highlight the need for a massive capacity-building programme to deal with frequent, destructive weather events. A monsoon deluge is not an uncommon occurrence in the subcontinent, and there is considerable variability in the duration and frequency of rainfall in different regions.
5.Catastrophic (adjective)
Meaning: involving or causing sudden great damage or suffering., involving a sudden and large-scale alteration in state., extremely unfortunate or unsuccessful.
Synonyms: disastrous, calamitous, cataclysmic, ruinous, tragic, fatal, dire, awful, terrible, dreadful.
Example: Catastrophic events, such as the Chennai flood of 2015, also necessitate a review of the protocol followed by State governments in controlling flows from dams and reservoirs. Apparently, much of the waters that have inundated parts of Jalore in Rajasthan flowed from a dam that was opened to relieve pressure, catching many by surprise.
6.Retaliate (verb)
Meaning: make an attack in return for a similar attack.
Synonyms: fight back, strike back, hit back, respond, react, reply, reciprocate, counterattack, return fire, return the compliment, put up a fight, take the bait, rise to the bait, return like for like, get back at someone, get, give tit for tat.
Example: When Barack Obama expelled Russian diplomats in the last leg of his presidency over Moscow’s alleged interference in the presidential election, Mr. Putin did not retaliate, apparently hoping to strike a new beginning with the incoming administration. During his campaign, Mr. Trump himself had expressed interest in building stronger ties with Moscow. But despite Mr. Trump’s overtures, the U.S. establishment has continued to take a hard-line position towards Moscow.
7.Moratorium (noun)
Meaning: a temporary prohibition of an activity.
Synonyms: embargo, ban, prohibition, suspension, postponement, stay, stoppage, halt, freeze, standstill, respite, hiatus, delay, deferment, deferral, adjournment.
Example: After the GEAC approved Bt brinjal for commercial production, the then Environment Minister, Jairam Ramesh, placed a moratorium after undertaking extensive public consultation.
8.Collateral (noun)
Meaning: something pledged as security for repayment of a loan, to be forfeited in the event of a default.
Synonyms: security, surety, guarantee, guaranty, pledge, bond, assurance, insurance, indemnity, indemnification.
Example: Urging the security forces to exercise restraint and avoid collateral damage during operations also makes little sense. The issues are far deeper than urging all stakeholders to allay the apprehensions and misgivings of the Kashmir youth. Something very different has occurred and something new needs to be attempted.
9.Espionage (noun)
Meaning: the practice of spying or of using spies, typically by governments to obtain political and military information.
Synonyms: spying, undercover work, cloak-and-dagger activities, surveillance, reconnaissance, intelligence, eavesdropping, infiltration, counter-espionage, counter-intelligence;
Example: Pakistan claims that these actions do not breach the Vienna Convention, as Jadhav was involved in espionage and sabotage.
10.Capricious (adjective)
Meaning: given to sudden and unaccountable changes of mood or behaviour.
Synonyms: fickle, inconstant, changeable, variable, unstable, mercurial, volatile, erratic, vacillating, irregular, inconsistent, fitful, arbitrary.
Example: The reasons supplied by the petitioners on why the linking of Aadhaar and PAN is capricious were wholly ignored. For example, the judgment failed to heed to the fact that the consequences of an invalidation of a person’s PAN might result in a virtual “civil death”, as the senior counsel Arvind P. Datar, who represented one of the petitioners, described the provision.
