Learn Vocabulary Using Root Words: Day 12

In this article, we learn how we can improve our vocabulary easily by developing tricks. We make use of a technique known as ETYMOLOGY.
Etymon (roots) + logy (study of) = etymology
Review of Etymology:
Prefix, Root, Suffix Meaning
Geno Race
Fratri Brother
Homi Man/woman
Infant baby
Matri Mother
Patri Father
Regi King or queen
Sui Oneself
Uxori wife
Sorori Sister
Fili Children
Foeti Unborn baby
Parri Parents
Cide denoting an act of killing

Tricks to learn words:

  • Murder of one’s children = Fili (children) + cide (denoting an act of killing) = Filicide
  • Murder of a foetus = foeti (unborn baby) + cide (denoting an act of killing) = Foeticide
  • Murder of one’s brother = Fratri (brother) + cide (denoting an act of killing) = Fratricide
  • Murder of an infant = infanti (baby) + cide (denoting an act of killing) = Infanticide
  • Murder of one’s mother = matri (mother) + cide (denoting an act of killing) = Matricide
  • Murder of one’s parents = parri (parents) + cide (denoting an act of killing) = Parricide
  • Murder of one’s father = patri (father) + cide (denoting an act of killing) = Patricide
  • Murder of king or queen = Regi (king or queen) + cide (denoting an act of killing) = Regicide
  • Murder of oneself = sui (oneself) + cide (denoting an act of killing) = Suicide
  • Murder of one’s wife = Uxori (wife) + cide (denoting an act of killing) = Uxoricide
  • Murder of one’s sister = Sorori (sister) + cide (denoting an act of killing) = Sororicide
  • Murder of a race = geno (race) + cide (denoting an act of killing) =genocide
  • Murder of man/woman = homi (man/woman) + cide (denoting an act of killing) = homicide
