Vocabulary from Economic Times: 25 July 2017

1. Dispel दूर करना 

Do away, banish, discard, Eliminate, Fend
Example: It's time to dispel the myth that it’s easy to start an online business.

2. Imitator: नकलची

Someone who copies the behaviour or actions of another; copier, copyist, emulator, follow, mimic
Example: The show's success has sparked off many imitators.

3. Emulate: अनुकरण करना 

Copy, reproduce, mirror, echo, follow, imitate
Example: This is something that other IITs, technical institutions, management schools and medical colleges should emulate.

4. Rev: गति बढ़ाना 

Make or become more active or energetic
Example: Electric mobility can hugely reduce carbon emissions and rev up energy efficiency too.

5. Slew: ढेर 

A large number or quantity of something
Example: It would not make much sense to provide a slew of tax benefits simply to encourage electric vehicle imports sans local manufacture.

6. Sans: बिना/ रहित 

Without
Example: It would not make much sense to provide a slew of tax benefits simply to encourage electric vehicle imports sans local manufacture.

7. Assorted: मिश्रित 

Mixed, Miscellaneous, varied, various, diverse, manifold
Example: Electric vehicles threaten that extensive part of India’s auto component industry that makes assorted components for the internal combustion engine.

8. Supersede: जगह लेना/ दूसरे का अधिकार ले लेना 

Replace, supplant, substitute, displace, oust, overthrow
Example: He was superseded by his junior.

9. Wane: घटना 

Disappear, decrease, diminish, dwindle, decline
Example: The moon is waning.

10. Ancillary: अधिनस्थ/सहायक 

Something which functions in a supplementary or supporting role
Example: Auto ancillaries need to quickly get their act together on electric vehicles.

11. Grin: दाँत दिखाते हुए मुस्कुराना 

Smile broadly, smile, beam, smirk
Example: Call it emoji or emoticon, the grinning face is an age-old emotion.

12. Scrawl: घसीट लिखावट 

Write (something) in a hurried, careless way; scribble, write untidily, doodle, scratch
Example: Tom scrawled his signature.

13. Typographical: मुद्रण संबंधी 

Relating to the style, appearance, or production of printed matter
Example: The book contains many typographical errors.

14. Sherbet: शरबत 

A cooling drink of sweet diluted fruit juices
Example: She served me orange sherbet.

15. Urn: कलश 

A tall, rounded vase with a stem and base, especially one used for storing the ashes of a cremated person
Example: A sherbet urn.

16. Pictograph: चित्रलेख 

A pictorial representation of statistics on a chart, graph, or computer screen
Example: Pictographs should be used carefully because the graphs may, either accidentally or deliberately, misrepresent the data.

17. Provenance: उत्पत्ति 

The beginning of something's existence; something's origin
Example: They try to understand the whole universe, its provenance and fate.

18. Rendition: प्रस्तुतीकरण 

A visual representation or reproduction; depiction, portrayal, representation, delineation
Example: After all, the emoticon is just the rendition of a face using a keyboard.

19. Anthropomorphic: मानवतारोपी/ मानवरूपी 

Having human characteristics
Example: Anthropomorphic is treating Gods or animals as human in form and personality.

20. Depose: अपदस्थ करना 

Remove from office suddenly and forcefully; dethrone, overthrow, overturn, topple, unseat
Example: He had been deposed by a military coup.
