The Hindu Newspaper Editorial Vocabulary For SSC CGL /MTS /CPO Exam

Dear Students, SSC CGL 2017 Exam will be conducted from 1st August to 20 August 2017. For vocabulary related questions, you need to read a lot and memorize the words so that you can answer all the questions based on vocab. Your reading habit can make all the difference. If you are not able to read a newspaper for SSC Exam, here we are providing vocab words based on the Hindu newspaper editorial.

1.Ramshackle (adjective)
Meaning: (especially of a house or vehicle) in a state of severe disrepair.
synonyms: tumbledown, dilapidated, derelict, ruinous, falling to pieces, decrepit, neglected, gone to rack and ruin, run down, crumbling, decaying, disintegrating.

Example: In Goyara Mugali, the sight of a bloody battle between the British and Mughal forces in 1857, the landscape is dominated by the yellowish-brown characteristic of arid Bundelkhand. Congested lanes, uneven broken paths, ramshackle semi-pucca structures, overflowing drains, mounds of filth and dysfunctional handpumps showcase the infrastructural poverty of the village located in Banda district, a few kilometres from the Ken river.

2.Rummage (verb)
Meaning: search unsystematically and untidily through something.
synonyms: search (through), hunt through, scrabble about/around in, root about/around in, ferret (about/around) in, fish about/around in, poke around in, dig in, grub about in, delve in.

Example: “Yeh hai bijli ka haal (This is the state of power supply),” exclaims Aftab. He quickly puts the disruption behind him and rummages through a pile of documents he summons from his room. It has photos, paper cuttings, receipts and certificates, some of them inscribed in the local Bundeli dialect, of the volleyball camps and events he has attended over the years.

3.Rampant (adjective)
Meaning: (especially of something unwelcome) flourishing or spreading unchecked.
synonyms: uncontrolled, unrestrained, unchecked, unbridled, widespread, pandemic, epidemic, pervasive.

Example: The village lies in the heart of the drought-prone region, battling bad crop, water crisis and unemployment. Migration is high and crime rampant. “We have to struggle for everything here. There are no opportunities. Educational facilities are limited. The only scope we saw was sports,” says Rizwan, who was groomed at the Lucknow Sports College.

4.Paucity (noun)
Meaning: the presence of something in only small or insufficient quantities or amounts.

Example: Despite the difficulties and paucity of equipment, Aftab has been able to make a name for himself, even finding recognition by the Bundelkhand Volleyball Protsahan Samiti. Two years ago, the district administration appointed him as its official district volleyball trainer.

5.Derogatory (adjective)
Meaning: showing a critical or disrespectful attitude.
synonyms: disparaging, denigratory, belittling, diminishing, slighting, deprecatory, depreciatory.

Example: A derogatory Facebook post about the Prophet Muhammad, allegedly posted on Friday, June 30, has sparked communal violence in Bengal. The affected areas are Baduria, Basirhat and surrounding towns and hamlets in the North 24 Parganas district, less than 100 km from the capital, Kolkata. Part of the story, such as the rumour that a schoolgoing 17-year-old wrote the offensive post and chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s claim that governor Keshari Nath Tripathi insulted her, are hard to believe.

6.Appeasement (noun)
Meaning: the action or process of appeasing.
synonyms: conciliation, placation, pacification, propitiation, palliation, allaying, reconciliation.
Example: Bengal’s Muslim population, according to the 2011census, is around 28 per cent, second only to Assam’s 34 per cent. Mamata’s ‘appeasement’ of Muslims — including job reservations and state funds for imams — has given the state BJP an opportunity to accuse her of being ‘anti-Hindu’. So, the chief minister is caught up in a whirlwind, attending Islamic festivals as well as Hindu ones, trying to project that she does not favour any particular faith.

7.Partisan (noun)
Meaning: a strong supporter of a party, cause, or person.
synonyms: supporter, follower, adherent, devotee, champion, backer, upholder, promoter, fanatic, fan, enthusiast, stalwart, zealot, disciple, votary.

Example: Banerjee should focus on good administration, building social and physical infrastructure, instead of stoking fires that might destroy the social and political fabric of Bengal. Such a strategy would be politically counterproductive from a partisan point of view as well.

8.Exacerbate (verb)
Meaning: make (a problem, bad situation, or negative feeling) worse.
synonyms: aggravate, make worse, worsen, inflame, compound;

Example: The growing pressures on water exacerbated by climate change and rising demand make this an important sector. The $40-million bilateral technology innovation fund in industrial development will help augment R&D and create a framework for partnership by Indian and Israeli researchers.

9.Lacuna (noun)
Meaning: an unfilled space; a gap.

Example: The lacunae in India’s cyber defences should be a priority area of joint research. Terror is the other big-ticket issue. Mindful of India’s relationship with countries in West Asia and the Gulf region, the joint statement does not specify any particular source of threat to peace and stability. Instead, it stresses on cooperating to combat growing radicalisation and terrorism, including cyber threats. The joint statement stresses on reliance on dialogue and restraint.

10.Volatile (adjective)
Meaning: (of a substance) easily evaporated at normal temperatures., liable to change rapidly and unpredictably, especially for the worse.
synonyms: evaporative, vaporous, tense, strained, fraught, uneasy, uncomfortable, charged, explosive, eruptive, inflammatory, turbulent, in turmoil, full of upheavals.

Example: The period ahead should raise the rewards for moving with agility and speed as digitisation blurs boundaries between industries and competition in emerging markets heats up. The importance of anticipating and reacting aggressively to discontinuities also is rising dramatically in our increasingly volatile world.
