Dear Students, SSC CGL 2017 Exam will be conducted from 1st August to 20 August 2017. For vocabulary related questions, you need to read a lot and memorize the words so that you can answer all the questions based on vocab. Your reading habit can make all the difference. If you are not able to read a newspaper for SSC Exam, here we are providing vocab words based on the Hindu newspaper editorial.

1.Gloom (noun)
Meaning: a state of depression or despondency., partial or total darkness.
Synonyms: despondency, depression, dejection, downheartedness, dispiritedness, heavy-heartedness, melancholy, melancholia, unhappiness, sadness, glumness, gloominess, low spirits, dolefulness, misery, sorrow, sorrowfulness, forlornness, darkness, semi-darkness, dark, gloominess, dimness, blackness, murkiness, murk, shadows, shade, shadiness, obscurity.
Example: It was the World T20 in the Caribbean in April 2010. A much fancied Indian men’s team had bowed out of the tournament after defeats to the West Indies and Australia. In an atmosphere of gloom and dejection, the women stepped up.

2.Ecstatic (adjective)
Meaning: feeling or expressing overwhelming happiness or joyful excitement., involving an experience of mystic self-transcendence.
Synonyms: enraptured, elated, transported, in transports, in raptures, euphoric.
Example: An ecstatic Goswami, a pillar of Indian women’s cricket for years now, stated in delight, “This is a game changer. See how this will encourage the girls to become the best team in the world. We have finally been accorded respect.”

3.Implementation (noun)
Meaning: the process of putting a decision or plan into effect; execution.
Synonyms: execution, application, carrying out, carrying through, performance, enactment, administration.
Example: The purpose of implementing these measures is to control the flow of traffic.

4.Rapport (noun)
Meaning
: a close and harmonious relationship in which the people or groups concerned understand each other's feelings or ideas and communicate well.
Synonyms: affinity, close/special relationship, (mutual) understanding, bond, empathy, harmony, sympathy, link, accord.
Example: The fact that the two leaders struck a good rapport, marked by mutual “respect and friendship”, despite the difference in their personalities, augurs well.

5.Profound (adjective)
Meaning: (of a state, quality, or emotion) very great or intense.
Synonyms: heartfelt, intense, keen, great, very great, extreme, sincere, earnest, deep, deepest, deeply felt, wholehearted, acute, overpowering, overwhelming, deep-seated, deep-rooted, fervent, ardent
Example: This has profound implications. It is one thing to romanticise grand old age such as Jeanne Calment’s, a Frenchwoman who died aged 122 in 1997. It’s quite another to create enabling conditions for old folks to live with dignity, remain productive and be cared for when they hang up their boots. Inarguably, many societies seek to address age-related issues, whether by reconsidering retirement age, bolstering social security or reorienting taxation and healthcare.

6.Derogatory (adjective)
Meaning: showing a critical or disrespectful attitude.
Synonyms: disparaging, denigratory, belittling, diminishing, slighting, deprecatory, depreciatory, depreciative, detracting, deflating;
Example: A derogatory Facebook post about the Prophet Muhammad, allegedly posted on Friday, June 30, has sparked communal violence in Bengal. The affected areas are Baduria, Basirhat and surrounding towns and hamlets in the North 24 Parganas district, less than 100 km from the capital, Kolkata.

7.Allegiance (noun)
Meaning: loyalty or commitment to a superior or to a group or cause.
Synonyms: loyalty, faithfulness, fidelity, obedience, fealty, adherence, homage, devotion, bond.
Example: What is indisputable, however, is that the ugly politics of faith has reared its head in Bengal after nearly 60 years. The blame for this lies at the doorstep of Banerjee, who knows that her landslide majorities in 2011 and 2016 were due to Muslims shifting their allegiance from the Left to Trinamool Congress.

8.Affinity (noun)
Meaning: a natural liking for and understanding of someone or something., the degree to which a substance tends to combine with another.
Synonyms: empathy, rapport, sympathy, accord, harmony, like-mindedness.
Example: This strategy of playing on religious affinities, we fear, will push Bengal down the slippery slope of communalism. The last time this happened was between the late 1920s and 1940s. The Hindu elite of Bengal were not keen to let democracy produce Muslim-dominated governments in an undivided Bengal.

9.Partisan (noun)
Meaning: a strong supporter of a party, cause, or person., (adjective )prejudiced in favour of a particular cause.
Synonyms: supporter, follower, adherent, devotee, champion, backer, upholder, promoter, fanatic, fan, enthusiast, stalwart, zealot, disciple, votary. biased, prejudiced, one-sided, coloured, discriminatory, preferential, partial, interested, parti pris, bigoted, sectarian, factional, unjust, unfair, inequitable, unbalanced
Example: Banerjee should focus on good administration, building social and physical infrastructure, instead of stoking fires that might destroy the social and political fabric of Bengal. Such a strategy would be politically counterproductive from a partisan point of view as well.

10.Ubiquitous (adjective)
Meaning: present, appearing, or found everywhere.
synonyms: omnipresent, ever-present, present everywhere, everywhere, all-over, all over the place, pervasive, all-pervasive, universal, worldwide, global.
Example: But he showed dangerous signs of dependency on his machineware — the ubiquitous mobile telephone — with the consequence of retreating from the ‘real world’. Addicted to it from a very young age, the boy became unstable and depressed when the phone was taken away from him, even cutting himself with a knife before he came under psychiatric therapy. Each generation has its cautionary tales of gadget dependence.
