The Hindu Newspaper Editorial Vocabulary For SSC CGL /MTS /CPO Exam

Dear Students, SSC CGL 2017 Exam will be conducted from 1st August to 20 August 2017. For vocabulary related questions, you need to read a lot and memorize the words so that you can answer all the questions based on vocab. Your reading habit can make all the difference. If you are not able to read a newspaper for SSC Exam, here we are providing vocab words based on the Hindu newspaper editorial.

1.Agitation (noun)
Meaning: a state of anxiety or nervous excitement.
Synonyms: anxiety, perturbation, disquiet, distress, concern, trouble, alarm, worry, upset.
Example: Media reports didn’t refer to the agitation by the project-affected, including Adivasis from resettlement sites and submergence areas within Gujarat, under way at Kevadia Colony near the dam site. The agitation’s leaders were arrested and hundreds stopped by the police as recently as June 6-7, when supporters and activists of the Narmada Bachao Andolan too faced arrest at the Gujarat-Madhya Pradesh border.

2.Grievance (noun)
Meaning:  a real or imagined cause for complaint, especially unfair treatment.
Synonyms:  injustice, unjust act, wrong, injury, ill, offence, disservice, unfairness, evil, outrage, atrocity, damage;
Example: Can all lives and livelihoods be resettled and rehabilitated by July 31, the deadline given by the Supreme Court’s order of February 8, 2017, when no orders have been passed by the Grievance Redressal Authority by June 8 as directed? The rehabilitation sites are not ready, with no drinking water, no proper roads, drains and culverts, no grazing grounds and other amenities which are mandatory.

3.Incarceration (noun)
Meaning:  the state of being confined in prison; imprisonment.
Synonyms:  imprisonment, internment, confinement, detention, custody, captivity, restraint
Example: The focus of public and judicial concern over the situation prevailing in India’s prisons has  in recent times been related to overcrowding and  long spells of incarceration faced by indigent inmates too poor to obtain bail.

4.Rudimentary (adjective)
Meaning:  involving or limited to basic principles.
Synonyms:  basic, elementary, introductory, early, primary, initial, first.
Example: It is said she incurred the wrath of the guards because of her rising popularity among the women prisoners. This suggests that until her arrival the inmates may not have been accustomed to even rudimentary care from the jail authorities.

5.Animus (noun)
Meaning:  hostility or ill feeling., motivation to do something.
Example: Eyewitnesses say that when the warder was severely assaulted by the guards, it led to a riot-like situation among the prisoners. It is not difficult to surmise that simmering discontent over the prevailing conditions, and an intense animus between the guards and the inmates, were behind the events. It is some consolation that the police have arrested six prison officials for the custodial murder.

6.Enshrine (verb)
Meaning: place (a revered or precious object) in an appropriate receptacle., preserve (a right, tradition, or idea) in a form that ensures it will be protected and respected.
Synonyms:  set down, set out, spell out, express, lay down, set in stone, embody, realize, manifest, incorporate, represent, contain, include, preserve.
One can only reiterate a principle already enshrined in it: the management of prisons must be marked by firm discipline, but also due regard to the human rights of prisoners. Prison reforms are not only about amenities and conditions; they must also address the prisoner’s right to life.

7.Incandescent (adjective)
Meaning:  emitting light as a result of being heated.
Synonyms:  white-hot, red-hot, burning, fiery, on fire, blazing, ablaze, aflame;
Example: Remarkable, because it is hard to believe  that the World Bank authored this document. When the report cites Michel Foucault — that incandescent French thinker, who showed us how supposedly free and rational institutions of modernity are indissolubly linked with power and social control — it is time to pay attention.

8.Hegemony (noun)
Meaning: leadership or dominance, especially by one state or social group over others.
Synonyms: leadership, dominance, dominion, supremacy, ascendancy, predominance, primacy, authority, mastery, control, power, sway, rule, sovereign
Example: This hegemony ensured that the bank has always been headed by white American males (until the current president) when the planet is virtually kept alive by women who constitute 60%  of the agriculture force in Asia and Africa. Unsurprisingly, many World Bank presidents previously worked in defence departments and private corporations.

9.Defiant (adjective)
Meaning:  showing defiance., full of or showing a disposition to challenge, resist, or fight :  full of or showing defiance
Synonyms: intransigent, resistant, obstinate, uncooperative, non-compliant, recalcitrant, confrontational, challenging;
Example: Mr. Trump had even offered China a better trade deal for its help in addressing the crisis and appreciated President Xi Jinping’s efforts. But neither the tough posturing nor banking on China’s help seems to have worked, and Kim Jong-un, North Korea’s Supreme Leader, remains as defiant as ever.

10.Punitive (adjective)
Meaning:  inflicting or intended as punishment.
Synonyms:  penal, disciplinary, corrective, correctional, retributive; More
(of a tax or other charge) extremely high.
Example: Mr. Trump has a counterpart in Seoul, Moon Jae-in, who is more inclined to addressing the issue through diplomacy. Besides, there is the  history of the North freezing its nuclear programme for nearly a decade in 1994 after a deal with world powers. Mr. Trump should take a realistic view of the crisis rather than immediately opt for retaliatory and punitive measures.
