If you are not able to read a newspaper for SSC Exam, here we are providing vocab words based on the Hindu newspaper editorial.
1.Pamphlet (noun)
Meaning: a small booklet or leaflet containing information or arguments about a single subject.
Synonyms: brochure, leaflet, booklet, circular, flyer, handbill, handout, bill, notice.
Example: Over a century ago, an Indian subject living in London wrote a pamphlet that was to become a rallying point for India’s nationalists
2.Indictment (noun)
Meaning: a formal charge or accusation of a serious crime.
Synonyms: charge, accusation, arraignment, citation, summons;
Example: Dadabhai Naoroji’s Poverty and un-British rule in India was not merely an indictment of economic imperialism but also served to call the bluff on the claim that the British Empire was necessary to ensure fairness in the governance of an India misgoverned by its native rulers.
3.Ponder (verb)
Meaning: think about (something) carefully, especially before making a decision or reaching a conclusion.
Synonyms: think about, give thought to, consider, review, reflect on, mull over, contemplate, study, meditate on, muse on, deliberate about, cogitate on, dwell on, brood on/over, ruminate about/on, chew over, puzzle over, speculate about, weigh up.
Example: Both involve death of our fellow citizens in which the state is implicated at least indirectly. That the state can be so placed leaves us to ponder the democracy we actually have. Only, unlike Naoroji’s salvo against the colonial state, today we would want to engage with ours in order to ensure that it is fit for a democracy.
4.Unambiguously (adverb)
Meaning: in a manner that is not open to more than one interpretation.
Example: Most of us seem to have an idea of what we mean when we utter ‘the T-word’. It unambiguously refers to attempts to destabilise if not actually destroy India from the outside.
5.Dubious (adjective)
hesitating or doubting., not to be relied upon; suspect.
Synonyms: doubtful, uncertain, unsure, in doubt, hesitant; suspicious, suspect, under suspicion, untrustworthy, unreliable, undependable,
Example: We may query the wisdom of aligning India with the United States whose historical role vis-a-vis terrorism is dubious.
6.Incubate (verb)
Meaning: (of a bird) sit on (eggs) in order to keep them warm and bring them to hatching., be developing an infectious disease before symptoms appear.
Example: U.S. foreign policy incubated the Taliban, which spread terror in the name of Islam, and rained terror on Iraqi children in the name of keeping the world safe from weapons of mass destruction.
7.Egregious (adjective)
Meaning: outstandingly bad; shocking.
Example: However, it cannot be doubted that India faces the threat of terror from outside its borders. ‘26/11’ is only the most egregious instance of this.
8.Emanate (verb)
Meaning: (of a feeling, quality, or sensation) issue or spread out from (a source)., originate from; be produced by., give out or emit (a feeling, quality, or sensation).
Synonyms: emerge, flow, pour, proceed, issue, ensue, come out, come forth, spread out.
synonyms: exude, give off, give out, send out, send forth, pour out, throw out, spread, discharge.
Example: India though is also besieged by terrorism emanating from within its borders, and this needs to be addressed with at least as much urgency as that which Prime Minister Narendra Modi brings to the issue of the external threat to India.
9.Tantamount (adjective)
Meaning: equivalent in seriousness to; virtually the same as.
Synonyms: equivalent to, equal to, amounting to, as good as, more or less, synonymous with, virtually the same as, much the same as, comparable to, on a par with, commensurate with, along the lines of, as serious as, identical to
Example: When the government, with which the first point of contact for a farmer is the village office, causes mental agony for the citizen by denying him the opportunity to discharge his obligations, it is tantamount to terrorism.
10.Paraphrase (verb)
Meaning: express the meaning of (something written or spoken) using different words, especially to achieve greater clarity.
Synonyms: reword, rephrase, put/express in other words, put/express in one's own words, express differently, rewrite, rescript, restate, rehash, interpret, gloss
Example: In the seventieth year of India’s Independence, we must recognise that the machinery of government as we know it came into existence to ring-fence plunder by the East India Company. Its association with terrorism, indirectly in the case of the mob lynchings or directly in the case of extortion, is not compatible with freedom. India’s state needs to be governed. To paraphrase our President, we can’t be vigilant enough.
