The Hindu Newspaper Editorial Vocabulary For SSC CGL /MTS /CPO Exam

Dear Students, The SSC CGL Tier-1 2017 Exam will start from 5th August to 24 August 2017. Sometimes in SSC CGL, vocab related questions are repeated, so you need to revise all the vocab notes at ssc adda and previous years vocab questions. Continue reading newspapers or novels. Your reading habit can make all the difference. If you are not able to read a newspaper for SSC Exam, here we are providing vocab words based on the Hindu newspaper editorial.

1.Manifesto (noun)
Meaning: a public declaration of policy and aims, especially one issued before an election by a political party or candidate.
Synonyms: policy statement, platform, programme, declaration, proclamation, pronouncement, announcement, publication, notification.

Example: The AAP government had appointed 21 MLAs as parliamentary secretaries in March 2015 to include MLAs in governance work and also to assist cabinet ministers in effective implementation of manifesto promises. Since then, Jarnail Singh, one of the 21 MLAs has resigned from his position.

2.Siege (noun)
Meaning: a military operation in which enemy forces surround a town or building, cutting off essential supplies, with the aim of compelling those inside to surrender.
Synonyms: blockade, beleaguerment, encirclement;
Example: The city of Marawi in the south of the Philippines has been engulfed by a deadly, ongoing siege since late May, when government forces began to take on heavily armed militants linked to the Islamic State. Local media estimate the death toll to be above 300. Over 200,000 residents have  fled what has effectively become an urban battlefield.

3.Render (verb)
Meaning: provide or give (a service, help, etc.)., cause to be or become; make.
Synonyms: give, provide, supply, furnish, make available, contribute, make, cause to be/become, leave.
Example: “In view of the examination of the facts and evidence on record and the analysis of the decisions rendered by the Supreme Court, the Election Commission concludes that the respondent had given his implied authorization for the publication of the advertisements in question and had knowingly taken advantage of the same,” the commission said in its order.

4.Sartorial (adjective)
Meaning: relating to tailoring, clothes, or style of dress.
Example: Not surprisingly then, that Pakistan has been ranked very low  in the Gender Gap Index, with only Yemen being worse off. These facts about the position of women in Pakistan are often related to social and cultural norms, where ‘Islam’ is said to blame for women’s backwardness, or the fact that the Saudisation of Pakistan over the last few decades has meant that the hijab or the abaya worn in parts of Islamic West Asia by women have become the sartorial choice of many women in Pakistan. Such essentialising fits in well with the stereotypes which abound about a supposedly Talibanised Pakistan.

5.Contour (noun)
Meaning: an outline representing or bounding the shape or form of something., a way in which something varies, especially the pitch of music or the pattern of tones in an utterance.
Synonyms: outline, shape, form.
Example: Interestingly, on Afghanistan, Mr. Modi spoke of maintaining “close consultation and communication with the U.S. to enhance coordination between our two nations”, and terrorism in that country being “one of our common concerns”. This space must be watched to determine the contours of future cooperation. So too, the reference to the increasing consultations on West Asia in the joint statement, “in accord with India’s Think West policy” flags an issue of important ramifications, requiring more elaboration.

6.Marauding (adjective)
Meaning: going about in search of things to steal or people to attack.
Example: In the Congress too, the leadership issue is more or less settled. Denying Chief Minister Siddaramaiah another shot at power would only weaken the party further. In any case, in the latest round of by-elections he  held his own against a marauding BJP.

7.Remnant (noun)
Meaning: a part or quantity that is left after the greater part has been used, removed, or destroyed.
synonyms: remains, remainder, leftovers, leavings, residue, rest;
Example: Today, very large telescopes send us iconic images of distant galaxies and of faint remnants of the light produced by the Big Bang. The light from the moons of Jupiter was always falling on earth. It took a telescope to detect it because it was so feeble and could not be seen with the naked eye. Interesting things, telescopes. They observe something that is already there. They do not produce what they observe.

8.Delineation (noun)
Meaning: the action of describing or portraying something precisely., the action of indicating the exact position of a border or boundary.
Synonyms: portrayal, description, presentation, depiction, representation, picture, portrait, account
Example: The delineation of shared interests as “democratic stalwarts” and “responsible stewards” in the joint statement (“Prosperity Through Partnership”) on the Indo-Pacific (a formulation more India-inclusive than earlier ones) is to be noted.

9.Outstrip (verb)
Meaning: move faster than and overtake (someone else).
Synonyms: go faster than, outrun, outdistance, outpace, leave behind, get (further) ahead of, gain on, draw away from, overtake, pass, shake off, throw off, lose, put distance between oneself and someone else, widen the gap between oneself and someone else.
Example: Each year, several dozen fiction and non-fiction books are published and lapped up by an eager audience (a bureaucrat working at the Sahitya Akademi recently told me that a single best-seller in Malayalam can often outstrip sales of all Hindi books in entire Hindi-speaking states). Second, translations of several great Malayalam books are hard to come by or are of questionable quality. So why not read them in the original?

10.Cripple (verb)
Meaning: cause (someone) to become unable to walk or move properly.
Synonyms: disable, paralyse, immobilize, make lame, lame, incapacitate, debilitate, handicap.
Example: The crippling nature of this narrowness becomes most clear when one of the “peripheral” states in Delhi terms—say, Tamil Nadu or Arunachal Pradesh—finds itself unlucky enough to be the subject of primetime English language news television. Surely my Tamil and Arunachali friends have had to sit with their mouths open as “pundits” wax eloquent on local matters with Olympian ignorance of their state’s past or future.
