The Hindu Newspaper Editorial Vocabulary For SSC CGL /MTS /CPO Exam

Dear Students, SSC CGL 2017 Exam will be conducted from 1st August to 20 August 2017. For vocabulary related questions, you need to read a lot and memorize the words so that you can answer all the questions based on vocab. Your reading habit can make all the difference. If you are not able to read a newspaper for SSC Exam, here we are providing vocab words based on the Hindu newspaper editorial.

1.Brooding (adjective)
Meaning: engaged in or showing deep thought about something that makes one sad, angry, or worried., appearing darkly menacing.
Example: “Just as a body must be cremated and cannot be brought back home, so must farm produce be sold,” says a brooding Jagdish Patidar, a farmer from Maheshwar on the banks of the Narmada in Madhya Pradesh.

2.Vicious (adjective)
Meaning: deliberately cruel or violent.
Synonyms: brutal, ferocious, savage, violent, dangerous, ruthless, remorseless, merciless, heartless, callous, cruel, harsh, cold-blooded, inhuman, fierce, barbarous, barbaric, brutish, bestial, bloodthirsty, bloody, fiendish, sadistic, monstrous.
Example: Mr. Patidar list the reasons — farmers do not have the space to store their produce; returning [with unsold produce] from the market would entail additional transportation costs; and most importantly, they need the money. It is here that the vicious cycle of the farmers’ crisis begins as they are forced to sell their produce cheaply.

3.Procurement (noun)
Meaning: the action of obtaining or procuring something., the action or occupation of acquiring military equipment and supplies.
Example: This leads to a dip in farm incomes which sometimes sparks off agitations, he says. Pointing out that the government opens procurement centres — to purchase farm produce at the minimum support price — more than a month after the harvest, Mr. Patidar says the farmer cannot hold on to his produce for such a long time.

4.Conduit (noun)
Meaning: a channel for conveying water or other fluid., a tube or trough for protecting electric wiring.
Synonyms: channel, duct, pipe, tube, gutter, groove, furrow, trough, trench, culvert, cut, sluice, spillway, race, flume, chute, ditch, drain
Example: One factor is the unique position of the Chumbi Valley, which is at once a dangerous conduit into the slender Siliguri Corridor and a dangerous choke point, exposed on both sides, for Chinese forces. A second factor is that this tussle is formally over the interests and rights of a third country, Bhutan, echoing the wider competition for influence in smaller countries — Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and elsewhere — across the Indo-Pacific region.

5.Implication (noun)
Meaning: the conclusion that can be drawn from something although it is not explicitly stated.
Synonyms: suggestion, inference, insinuation, innuendo, hint, intimation, imputation, indication.
Example: At the military level, India has good reason to prevent Chinese road building near Doka La. Chinese activity has steadily increased in the area beneath Bhutan’s claim-line, pushing the area under its de facto control about 5 km southwards, towards a crucial ridge-line. This has a number of implications.

6.Repudiation (noun)
Meaning: rejection of a proposal or idea., denial of the truth or validity of something.
Example: But the wider context is one of relentlessly hardening attitudes, on both sides. Beijing is aggrieved by the Dalai Lama’s visit to Tawang in April, India’s aggressive repudiation of the Belt and Road Initiative in May, and India’s forward-leaning posture in the South China Sea — the latter underscored by Vietnam’s two-year extension of a 2006 oil concession to ONGC Videsh last week.

7.Inchoate (adjective)
Meaning: just begun and so not fully formed or developed; rudimentary.
LAW (of an offence, such as incitement or conspiracy) anticipating or preparatory to a further criminal act.
Example: India’s complaints are too numerous and familiar to elaborate, but they span international institutions (membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group), terrorism (Masood Azhar), sovereignty (China-Pakistan Economic Corridor) and, in a more inchoate way, questions of the basic security order in Asia.

8.Deference (noun)
Meaning: polite submission and respect.
Synonyms: respect, respectfulness, regard, esteem.
Example: “India-China relations are undergoing a change,” wrote former Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran on July 3. “China believes that India should acknowledge the power disparity between the two sides and show appropriate deference to China.” India has always repudiated this idea.

9.Iteration (noun)
Meaning: the repetition of a process or utterance., a new version of a piece of computer hardware or software., a procedure in which repetition of a sequence of operations yields results successively closer to a desired result.
Example: It is on display in the Bay of Bengal, where one of the largest-ever iterations of the Malabar exercise series is getting underway with aircraft carriers/helicopter carrier from India, the U.S., and Japan. We see it also in this weekend’s news, reported in this newspaper, that the government is conducting a national security review of Chinese investment in South Asia. Perhaps, in the coming weeks, 17 Corps will suddenly find that the purse strings have become looser too.

10.Transpire (verb)
Meaning: (of a secret or something unknown) come to be known; be revealed.
Synonyms: become known, become apparent, be revealed, be disclosed, come to light, emerge, come out, get out, be discovered, be uncovered, materialize, leak out, turn out, be made public.
Example: The incidents in Basirhat seem eerily similar to what transpired in Kaliachak in Malda district in January 2016. Then, too, the State government had not shown alacrity in ending the violence, or acting against those responsible for it.
