1.Overt (adjective)
Meaning: done or shown openly; plainly apparent.
Synonyms: undisguised, unconcealed, plain to see, plainly seen, plain, clear, apparent, conspicuous, unmistakable, obvious, noticeable, observable, visible, manifest, patent, open, public, above board.
Example: It all began with the new chief minister of Uttar Pradesh (UP), Yogi Adityanath, making this his first substantive economic announcement, in keeping with his party’s manifesto, although there was no overt demand from UP farmers then.
2.Snowball (verb)
Meaning: throw snowballs at., increase rapidly in size, intensity, or importance.
Example: Ever since, farmer agitations and suicides have snowballed across the country, compelling other state governments to consider this as a serious option for relieving farmers’ distress.
3.Engender (verb)
Meaning: cause or give rise to (a feeling, situation, or condition).
synonyms: cause, be the cause of, give rise to, bring about, lead to, result in, produce, create, generate, arouse, rouse, provoke, incite, kindle, trigger, spark off, touch off, stir up, whip up, induce, inspire, instigate, foment, effect, occasion, promote, foster.
Example: The position taken by India’s elite is best summed up in the words of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Urjit Patel: “I think it (farm loan waiver) undermines an honest credit culture, it impacts credit discipline, it blunts incentives for future borrowers to repay, in other words, waivers engender moral hazard.
4.Ominous (adjective)
Meaning: giving the worrying impression that something bad is going to happen; threateningly inauspicious.
Synonyms: threatening, menacing, baleful, forbidding, sinister, doomy, inauspicious, unpropitious, portentous, unfavourable, dire, unpromising.
Example: Different aspects of this ominous view have been picked up by different interlocutors to create a new, frightening urban legend. It is important to critically examine the validity of these claims in the specific context in which waivers are being considered.
5.Empirical (adjective)
Meaning: based on, concerned with, or verifiable by observation or experience rather than theory or pure logic.
synonyms: observed, seen, factual, actual, real, verifiable, first-hand.
Example: The first point that needs to be made is that this isn’t the first time farm loan waivers are being given. Therefore, it is possible to subject its effects to empirical validation. Second, even if such effects are valid, they need to be evaluated against the counterfactual: what is the likely outcome if waivers are not granted? Third, are these repeated instances of waivers just political populism or do they point to a more fundamental problem in the design of farm loans in India?
6.Austerity (noun)
Meaning: sternness or severity of manner or attitude., difficult economic conditions created by government measures to reduce public expenditure.
Example: The results of austerity have already been documented in individual deaths of people who die waiting for benefits. Grenfell has been described as “social murder”, a phrase from Friedrich Engels that describes the appalling conditions that result in the deaths of working-class people.
7.Loophole (noun)
Meaning: an ambiguity or inadequacy in the law or a set of rules.
synonyms: means of evasion/avoidance, means of escape, escape clause, escape route.
Example: Warning about loopholes in regulation go back to a fire in Garnock Court in Irvine in which one person died in 1999. Nonetheless, both Labour and Tory governments have campaigned to pare down regulations.
8.Aftermath (noun)
Meaning: the consequences or after-effects of a significant unpleasant event.
synonyms: repercussions, after-effects, by-product, fallout, backwash, trail, wake, corollary.
Example: This fire and its aftermath has consumed these foolish notions. Politics is about power, who has it and in whose interests it is wielded. The freedom of the market and the freedom from red tape meant people were trapped in a flaming building. No one is “playing politics” here except those desperately trying to police the boundaries of acceptable emotion and acceptable politics.
9.Nullify (verb)
Meaning: make legally null and void; invalidate., make of no use or value; cancel out.
synonyms: annul, declare null and void, render null and void, void, invalidate, render invalid., cancel out, neutralize, negate, render ineffective, make of no use or value;
Example: For much of recent history, men have tended to die earlier than women, though this was not always the case: for many centuries, the perils of childbirth effectively nullified any advantage women had over men.
10.Disparity (noun)
Meaning: a great difference.
synonyms: discrepancy, inconsistency, imbalance, inequality, incongruity, unevenness.
Example: While disparities in life expectancy between men and women have typically been greeted with a collective shrug, these questions are taking on greater urgency as new research reveals ominous trends for men’s health.
