Dear Students, SSC CGL 2017 Exam will be conducted from 1st August to 20 August 2017. For vocabulary related questions, you need to read a lot and memorize the words so that you can answer all the questions based on vocab. Your reading habit can make all the difference. If you are not able to read a newspaper for SSC Exam, here we are providing vocab words based on the Hindu newspaper editorial.

1.Radical (adjective)
Meaning: (especially of change or action) relating to or affecting the fundamental nature of something; far-reaching or thorough.
Synonyms: thoroughgoing, thorough, complete, total, entire, absolute, utter, comprehensive, exhaustive, root-and-branch, sweeping, far-reaching, wide-ranging.
Example: In its first six months, the Trump administration’s radical and nationalistic approach to international affairs has already touched India in important areas, from visas for skilled workers, to climate change, to  Iran policy.

2.Incumbent (adjective)
Meaning: necessary for (someone) as a duty or responsibility., (of an official or regime) currently holding office.
Synonyms: binding, obligatory, mandatory, necessary, compulsory, required, requisite.
Example: After an era in which successive American Presidents were persuaded to forego short-term pay-offs for longer-term economic and diplomatic investment in India, we now have an incumbent whose foreign policy imperative is to secure a pound of flesh — and to do so in the here and now.

3.Robust (adjective)
Meaning: strong and healthy; vigorous.
Synonyms: strong, vigorous, sturdy, tough, powerful, powerfully built, solidly built, as strong as a horse/ox, muscular, sinewy, rugged, hardy, strapping, brawny, burly.
Example: First, the India-U.S. relationship has its own mass and momentum. While the grand gestures of the past decade may be more difficult to achieve, the relationship is likely to remain robust.

4.Augment (verb)
Meaning: make (something) greater by adding to it; increase.
Synonyms: increase, make larger, make bigger, make greater, add to, supplement, top up, build up, enlarge, expand, extend, raise, multiply, elevate, swell, inflate.
Example: The State Department’s decision to authorise the $2 billion sale of nearly two dozen predator drones to India, significantly augmenting the Indian Navy’s unmanned aerial capability, is an important signal in this regard.

5.Manipulate (verb)
Meaning: handle or control (a tool, mechanism, information, etc.) in a skilful manner., control or influence (a person or situation) cleverly or unscrupulously.
Synonyms: operate, handle, work, control, use, employ, utilize
Example: Second, there is now a template for how foreign leaders can manipulate Mr. Trump to their own ends.

6.Vituperative (adjective)
Meaning: bitter and abusive.
Example: We have two useful illustrations of this: China and Saudi Arabia. China, criticised in vituperative terms by Mr. Trump on the campaign trail, persuaded the President not only to swallow the bowdlerised history that Korea “used to be a part of China”, but also that Beijing was making every effort to address North Korea’s nuclear programme.

7.Shibboleth (noun)
Meaning: a custom, principle, or belief distinguishing a particular class or group of people, especially a long-standing one regarded as outmoded or no longer important.
Example: The Qatar crisis has shown that he cares little for shibboleths such as regional stability, mutual restraint, and dispute resolution. He respects power and those who wield it, oftentimes regardless of the end result. For better or worse, this may open up new space for India’s posture towards Pakistan, which has over the past year evolved in a significantly more coercive and risk-acceptant direction.

8.Preclude (verb)
Meaning: prevent from happening; make impossible.
Synonyms:  prevent, make it impossible for, make it impracticable for, rule out, put a stop to, stop, prohibit, debar, interdict, block, bar, hinder, impede.
Example: The ICJ has rejected Pakistan’s objections regarding the urgency of the matter. It rejected Pakistan’s own jurisdiction to take up the case and its claim that a 2008 bilateral agreement between the two countries precluded the matter from being raised before the ICJ.

9.Uncanny (adjective)
Meaning: strange or mysterious, especially in an unsettling way.
Synonyms: eerie, unnatural, preternatural, supernatural, unearthly, other-worldly, unreal, ghostly, mysterious, strange, abnormal, odd, curious, queer, weird, bizarre.
Example: There is an uncanny similarity of argument between the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on controversies that have to do with belief. This is illustrated best in their respective positions on the Ram Setu and the triple talaq debates.

10.Jurisprudence (noun)
Meaning: the theory or philosophy of law., a legal system.
Example: Such an outcome would be an easy one for the court to achieve, and of a piece with decades of consistent jurisprudence.
