The Hindu Newspaper Editorial Vocabulary For SSC CGL /MTS /CPO Exam

Dear Students, SSC CGL 2017 Exam will be conducted from 1st August to 20 August 2017. For vocabulary related questions, you need to read a lot and memorize the words so that you can answer all the questions based on vocab. Your reading habit can make all the difference. If you are not able to read a newspaper for SSC Exam, here we are providing vocab words based on the Hindu newspaper editorial.

1.Rabid (adjective)
Meaning: having or proceeding from an extreme or fanatical support of or belief in something.
synonyms: extreme, fanatical, overzealous, over-enthusiastic, extremist, violent, maniacal, wild, passionate, fervent, die-hard, uncompromising.
Example: Somehow we have created a binary in which there are only two opposing groups — those in mainland India who consider Kashmiris to be pro-Pakistan Wahhabis who support terrorism, and those in the Valley who consider Indians to be rabid communalists.

2.Lumpen (adjective)
Meaning: of or relating to dispossessed and uprooted individuals cut off from the economic and social class with which they might normally be identified.
Example: There are many within the Hurriyat who would consider talks again, just as there are many in the Valley who are worried about the lumpenisation of Islam that the stone-pelters represent.

3.Expound (verb)
Meaning: present and explain (a theory or idea) in detail.
synonyms: present, put forward, set forth, proffer, offer, advance, propose, propound, frame, give an account of, recount;
Example: But for the illuminating and exhaustive 86-page introduction expounding the judicial creativity and craftsmanship of the judge, K.K. Mathew would have been just one judge out of  a roll-call of 186 judges who had sat in India’s Supreme Court.

4.Collateral (noun)
Meaning: something pledged as security for repayment of a loan, to be forfeited in the
event of a default.
synonyms: security, surety, guarantee, guaranty, pledge, bond, assurance, insurance, indemnity, indemnification.
Example: Urging the security forces to exercise restraint and avoid collateral damage during operations also makes little sense. The issues are far deeper than urging all stakeholders to allay the apprehensions and misgivings of the Kashmir youth. Something very different has occurred and something new needs to be attempted.

5.Intifada (noun)
Meaning: the Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza
Strip. The first intifada lasted from 1987 to 1993, and the second began in 2000.
Example: The unorganised – and even divided – nature of the protest movement carries
the danger that it could turn into an Intifada, a kind of people’s uprising with no known leaders, and increasing numbers of trouble-makers, all portraying themselves as
leaders of the movement.

6.Collude (verb)
Meaning: come to a secret understanding; conspire.
Synonyms: conspire, connive, intrigue, be hand in glove, plot, participate in a conspiracy, collaborate, scheme;
Example: Trustbusters must also become more data-savvy in their analysis of market dynamics, for example by using simulations to hunt for algorithms colluding over prices or to determine how best to promote competition.

7.Incongruous (adjective)
Meaning: not in harmony or keeping with the surroundings or other aspects of something.
synonyms: out of place, out of keeping, inappropriate, unsuitable, unsuited, not in harmony.
Example: On the face of it, India’s decision to move the ICJ may appear somewhat incongruous in the light of its position against internationalizing its disputes with Pakistan.

synonyms: geniality, congeniality, conviviality, cordiality, affability, amiability,sociability, friendliness, warmth, warm-heartedness, good nature, good humour,joviality, cheerfulness, good cheer, cheeriness, jollity, happiness
Example: It is foolhardy on India’s part to expect any bonhomie from Turkey (“The long arc to Ankara”, May 5). India’s close ties with  Russia along with its warmth towards the Cyprus President, and Vice President Hamid Ansari’s visit to Armenia are sure to discomfort Turkey.

9.Reparation (noun)
