If you are not able to read a newspaper for SSC Exam, here we are providing vocab words based on the Hindu newspaper editorial.
1.Proceedings (noun)
Meaning: an event or a series of activities involving a set procedure., action taken in a court to settle a dispute.
Synonyms: events, activities, business, affairs, happenings, goings-on, doings.
Example: In a setback for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Election Commission (EC) on Saturday dismissed its petition and said that proceedings on the question of disqualification of the members in a case of them allegedly holding office of profit will continue.
Meaning: a public declaration of policy and aims, especially one issued before an election by a political party or candidate.
Synonyms: policy statement, platform, programme, declaration, proclamation, pronouncement, announcement, publication, notification.
Example: The AAP government had appointed 21 MLAs as parliamentary secretaries in March 2015 to include MLAs in governance work and also to assist cabinet ministers in effective implementation of manifesto promises. Since then, Jarnail Singh, one of the 21 MLAs has resigned from his position.
3.Render (verb)
Meaning: provide or give (a service, help, etc.)., cause to be or become; make.
Synonyms: give, provide, supply, furnish, make available, contribute, make, cause to be/become, leave.
Example: “In view of the examination of the facts and evidence on record and the analysis of the decisions rendered by the Supreme Court, the Election Commission concludes that the respondent had given his implied authorization for the publication of the advertisements in question and had knowingly taken advantage of the same,” the commission said in its order.
4.Ombudsman (noun)
Meaning: an official appointed to investigate individuals' complaints against a company or organization, especially a public authority.
Example: The banking ombudsman has now been powered to pass an award of Rs20 lakh, as against the earlier threshold of Rs10 lakh.
5.Incubate (verb)
Meaning: (of a bird) sit on (eggs) in order to keep them warm and bring them to hatching., be developing an infectious disease before symptoms appear.
Example: The temperature at which sea turtle embryos incubate determines the sex of an individual, which is known as temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD).
6.Pivotal (adjective)
Meaning: of crucial importance in relation to the development or success of something else.
Synonyms: central, crucial, vital, critical, focal, essential, key, significant, important, determining, decisive, deciding
Example: The pivotal temperature for TSD is 29 degrees celsius as both males and females are produced in equal proportions—above 29 degrees celsius mainly females are produced while below 29 degrees celsius more males are born.
7.Parochial (adjective)
Meaning: having a limited or narrow outlook or scope.
Synonyms: narrow-minded, small-minded, provincial, insular, narrow, small-town, inward-looking, limited, restricted, localist, conservative, conventional, short-sighted, petty, close-minded, blinkered, myopic, introverted, illiberal, hidebound, intolerant.
Example: I don’t do this solely out of a parochial linguistic pride, though there is some of that of course. But there are other more important reasons.
8.Outstrip (verb)
Meaning: move faster than and overtake (someone else).
Synonyms: go faster than, outrun, outdistance, outpace, leave behind, get (further) ahead of, gain on, draw away from, overtake, pass, shake off, throw off, lose, put distance between oneself and someone else, widen the gap between oneself and someone else.
Example: Each year, several dozen fiction and non-fiction books are published and lapped up by an eager audience (a bureaucrat working at the Sahitya Akademi recently told me that a single best-seller in Malayalam can often outstrip sales of all Hindi books in entire Hindi-speaking states). Second, translations of several great Malayalam books are hard to come by or are of questionable quality. So why not read them in the original?
9.Fascinating (adjective)
Meaning: extremely interesting.
Synonyms: engrossing, captivating, absorbing, interesting, enchanting, beguiling, bewitching, enthralling, enrapturing, entrancing, spellbinding, transfixing, riveting, mesmerizing, hypnotizing, engaging, compelling, compulsive, gripping, thrilling.
Example: In-between, there are countless histories. Each state in India, for example, can boast of fascinating histories featuring singular characters, crises, challenges and transformations. Even states that sit right next to each other, while continuously influencing each other’s society, economics and politics, can have historical narratives that diverge widely.
10.Cripple (verb)
Meaning: cause (someone) to become unable to walk or move properly.
Synonyms: disable, paralyse, immobilize, make lame, lame, incapacitate, debilitate, handicap.
Example: The crippling nature of this narrowness becomes most clear when one of the “peripheral” states in Delhi terms—say, Tamil Nadu or Arunachal Pradesh—finds itself unlucky enough to be the subject of primetime English language news television. Surely my Tamil and Arunachali friends have had to sit with their mouths open as “pundits” wax eloquent on local matters with Olympian ignorance of their state’s past or future.
