Example: Expensive, hazardous and inequitable. The government’s recent approval to ten new nuclear reactors deserves to be carefully appraised.
1. Inequitable [in-ek-wi-tuh-buh l]
Adjective: not equitable; unjust or unfair.
Synonyms: arbitrary, biased, discriminatory, one-sided, prejudiced, unbalanced.
Antonyms: balanced, even, fair, impartial, just, unbiased.
2. Appraise [uh-preyz]
Verb: to estimate the monetary value of; determine the worth of; assess; to estimate the nature, quality, importance, etc.
Synonyms: assess, audit, calculate, check out, evaluate, examine, gauge.
Antonyms: ignore, neglect.
Example: Its reactor business is being taken over by a clutch of companies, including the public sector.
3. Clutch [kluhch]
Noun: a number of similar individuals; a hatch of eggs; the number of eggs produced or incubated at one time; a brood of chickens.
Synonyms: clamp, clasp, clench, clinch.
Antonyms: misconception, misunderstanding, release.
Example: The collapse of these companies vindicates critics of these deals, who consistently pointed out that India’s agreements with Areva and Westinghouse were fiscally irresponsible.
4. Vindicate [vin-di-keyt]
Verb: to clear, as from an accusation, imputation, suspicion, or the like; to afford justification for; justify; to uphold or justify by argument or evidence.
Synonyms: absolve, acquit, corroborate, defend, disprove, exonerate, justify, prove.
Antonyms: blame, charge, condemn, convict, deny, disprove.
Example: Therefore, the government’s recent decision to approve the construction of ten 700 MW Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) deserves to be scrutinised carefully.
5. Scrutinise [skroot-n-ahyz]
Verb: to examine in detail with careful or critical attention.
Synonyms: analyze, check, check out, comb, consider, dissect, explore, inspect.
Antonyms: forget, ignore, neglect, misunderstand.
Example: Footfall of tourists from Gujarat to the Kashmir Valley has fallen significantly this year.
6. Footfall [foo t-fawl]
Noun: a footstep; the sound of footsteps.
Synonyms: stride, footprint, footstep, gait, impression, mark.
Example: Tourism players in Kashmir blame “negative campaign” by right wing groups on the social media, besides the unrest, for the 85% slump in the sector.
7. Slump [sluhmp]
Verb: to drop or fall heavily; collapse; to assume a slouching, bowed, or bent position or posture.
Synonyms: collapse, crash, depreciation, dip, downtrend, downturn.
Antonyms: ascent, increase, rise, blessing, boon, happiness.
Example: This year it has come down to a trickle,” Farooq Kuthoo, secretary-general of the Travel Agents’ Association of Kashmir, told The Hindu.
8. Trickle [trik-uh l]
Noun: a trickling flow or stream; a small, slow, or irregular quantity of anything coming, going, or proceeding.
Verb: to flow or fall by drops, or in a small, gentle stream; to come, go, or pass bit by bit, slowly, or irregularly.
Synonyms: crawl, creep, dribble, flow, leak, ooze.
Antonyms: pour, flow.
Example: I am not privy to any online campaign but yes, there is a negative perception about the destination.
9. Privy [priv-ee]
Adjective: participating in the knowledge of something private or secret (usually followed by to); belonging or pertaining to some particular person, especially with reference to a sovereign.
Synonyms: covert, personal, private, separate, buried.
Antonyms: open, public, unconcealed, known, revealed, unaware.
Example: Himachal jail inmates sell vermi-compost manufactured by inmates in prisons.
10. Inmate [in-meyt]
Noun: a person who is confined in a prison, hospital, etc.
Synonym: convict, prisoner, internee, jailbird.
