Punjab and UNODC will join together to wipe out drugs in state
The Punjab government has decided to collaborate with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) as part of its efforts to root out the drug menace in the State. Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and UNODC representative Sergey Kapinos met here in this regard on Wednesday. “A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed between the State’s Health Department, a Special Task Force (STF) and the UNODC in the second week of June.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the 18th Indo Russian Summit at St Petersburg today. Both the leaders will hold discussions at the Oval Hall of the Konstantin Palace.The meeting is held in accordance with the declaration of strategic partnership between India and Russia in October 2000 calling for the mechanism of annual summits.

Jet Airways has announced the appointment of Vinay Dube as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO).Mr. Dube is currently senior vice-president, Asia Pacific, Delta Air Lines.
Former Indian envoy to the US Nirupama Rao has been appointed public policy fellow to a Washington-based think-tank. She will work on a project on the Sino-India ties for the top American think-tank. Ms Rao will be affiliated with the Wilson Centre's Asia programme. Beginning in June 2017, she will spend three months in residence at the Wilson Centre which is a key non-partisan policy forum for tackling global issues. The American think-tank said, she will be working on a book project on the Indo-China relationship. The 66-year-old former Indian diplomat was India's first woman ambassador to China and the first woman spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She also served as India's foreign secretary from 2009 to 2011.

C.K. Birla Group firm Orient Cement signed definitive agreements with Manoj Gaur-led Jaypee Group to acquire two of its cement units for 1,946 crore rupees. The first agreement was signed by Orient Cement to buy 74% stake in the Bhilai unit of Jaypee Cement at an enterprise value of 1,450 crore rupees.
Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL) plans to spend 2,500 crore rupees on R&D to develop and enhance indigenous products and technologies for the military by 2020. The state-owned defence electronics manufacturer plans to develop solutions in military communications, radars, electronic warfare suites, weapon systems and electro-optic devices.As part of the R&D plan, BEL’s board approved 274 crore rupees budget for developing the QR-SAM (quick reaction surface-to-air missile) for the armed forces with technology partner DRDO.

AGREEMENTS
India today signed a loan agreement of36 million dollar with the World Bank for Himachal Pradesh Public Financial Management Capacity Building Programme. The project aims to improve the efficiency of public expenditure management and tax administration in Himachal Pradesh. The agreement was signed by Joint Secretary of Department of Economic Affairs Raj Kumar and the Bank's Country Director Junaid Kamal Ahmad.

Japan launched a satellite today to help build a high-precision geo location system that will complement the US-operated Global Positioning System (GPS). Footage by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency showed, a H-IIA rocket blasting off from the Tanegashima space centre in southern Japan carrying the "Michibiki" No.2 satellite.
Historian Ramachandra Guha who was appointed by the Supreme Court as one of the four administrators of BCCI, today informed the court that he had resigned from the post due to personal reasons. A vacation bench of Justices M M Shantanagoudar and Deepak Gupta was informed by Guha's counsel that he had tendered his resignation on May 28 to Chairman of the Committee of Administrators of the BCCI Vinod Rai.The apex court had on January 30 appointed a four-member committee of administrators headed by former Comptroller and Auditor General Vinod Rai to run the affairs of BCCI.

OBITUARIES
Parvathamma Rajkumar, producer-distributor of Kannada cinema and wife of thespian Dr. Rajkumar, passed away on Wednesday morning at a private hospital here after a prolonged illness. She was 78.
