World Environment Day: 5 June 2017

• June 5 is World Environment Day, the largest, most globally celebrated day for positive environmental action. 
• Theme 2017: Connecting People to Nature.
• That means encouraging people to get outdoors and appreciate the beauty of the planet in a bid to show people the importance of protecting it for future generations.
• The theme was chosen by this year’s host country – Canada – which will be the centre of World Environment Day activities.

National Events

Pension for single-women launched in Telangana

• The Telangana government was the only government in the country to launch welfare schemes such as pension for single women for the betterment of society
• Following petitions on the plight of single women deserted by their husbands and relatives, the government decided to distribute pension of Rs.1,000 per month to such women on humanitarian grounds.
• The women, who received pensions, were praising the State government for recognising them and honouring them with pension. They urged the government to accord priority in providing employment to single women.

India launches first bicycle share scheme

• India's first bike sharing scheme launched this weekend in the southern city of Mysuru.
• The bikes, of which 450 will be available to the city's 1.2 million inhabitants, will be hirable from 48 docking stations across the city.
• The scheme, which is being run by bike sharing company Trin Trin, was launched with a fair amount of fanfare in the city of Mysuru which is already known as India's cleanest city.
• Alongside the physical launch, an app has been released and several videos have been published detailing how the system works.
• Registered users will be able to access the bikes with an NFC-capable card. Registration costs 350 rupees, which is just over £4, and includes a refundable deposit for the activation cards.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu launches mobile veterinary clinic

• Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu launched ‘Sexed Semen for Cows Supply Scheme (SSCSS) and inaugurated mobile veterinary clinic under Sanchara Pasu Vaidya Seva Kendram (SPVSK) with grant-in-aid under PPP 
• The main aim was to provide veterinary service at the doorstep of farmers in uncovered areas. 
• The government identified 810 villages under 45 divisions and 45 vehicles would be in operation. 
• SPVSK mobile veterinary clinic would help in general medical attendance, minor surgical interventions, A.I. Services, reproductive management, input supply services and lab investigations.
• The new mobile veterinary service would provide emergency services round the clock. 
• This service would act as a link between the livestock farmers and Animal Husbandry Department and facilitate disease diagnosis, prompt treatment of sick animals at the doorstep, alert the farmers and public authorities concerned of village about the incidence of diseases, render extension services to increase the productivity per unit of livestock.

Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar to receive Bharat Gaurav Award by NRI community of US

• Madhur Bhandarkar, known for his path-breaking films was honoured with the Padma Shri award by the Government of India last year. 
• The filmmaker already has the National Awards for Best Feature Film and Best Director for Page 3 and Traffic Signal respectively. 
• Now, the ace director is being conferred with the Bharat Gaurav Award on June 9 at the United Nations Hall, New York.
• The 48 year old will be conferred with Bharat Gaurav Award along with spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Late Kalpana Chawla, Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak (who is behind Shulabh Shauchalayas in the country), Acharya Lokesh Muni and few others prominent personalities on June 9, 2017.

Ramkumar wins ITF Futures title in Singapore

• Top seed Ramkumar Ramanathan outplayed second seed Raymond Sarmiento of the U.S. 6-2, 6-2 in the final of the USD 15,000 ITF men’s Futures tennis tournament in Singapore.
• It was the first title of the season and 15th of his career for Ramkumar, who had competed in the qualifying event of the French Open before deciding to use the time on hand fruitfully.

Nitin, Mihika win Asian junior titles

• Wild-card entrant Nitin Sinha and Mihika Yadav emerged champions in the boys’ and girls’ events in the HCL Asian junior tennis championship at the MSLTA school of tennis courts in the Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Sports City.
• Nitin, the India No. 2, rallied past Chin Christian Didier of Malaysia 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in two hours and 20 minutes.
• Second seed Mihika, on the other hand, had little trouble in overpowering Mahak Jain with a 6-3, 6-3 win.

Shuttler Sai Praneeth wins Thailand Grand Prix Gold title

• Indian shuttler B Sai Praneeth lifted his maiden Grand Prix gold title by posting a come-from-behind victory over Indonesian Jonatan Christie in the men's singles final of the USD 1,20,000 Thailand Open here on Sunday.
• The third seeded Indian prevailed 17-21 21-18 21-19 over the fourth seeded Indonesian in a contest that lasted an hour and 11 minutes.
• This is Praneeth's second consecutive title win, following the Singapore Open victory. He had reached the finals of Syed Modi International in January at Hyderabad, where he lost to Sameer Verma.

Science & Technology

NASA launched sounding rocket to release radiant artificial clouds

• NASA launched a sounding rocket which will release blue-green and red artificial clouds.
• The launch of the Terrier-Improved Malemute sounding rocket testing a new deployment system to support space studies was originally scheduled for May 31, but it was delayed due to poor weather conditions.
• The rocket will eject 10 canisters about the size of a soft drink can between 10 to 20 km from the rocket's main payload, and these containers will release the vapour between 4 and 5.5 minutes after launch.
• The development of the multi-canister or ampule ejection system will allow scientists to gather information over a much larger area than previously allowed when deploying the vapour just from the main payload.
• Ground cameras will be stationed at Wallops and in Duck, North Carolina, to view the vapour tracers.

ISRO to Launch Its Heaviest Rocket and Satellite

• India's most powerful homegrown rocket is launched today
• The 43-metre (140-foot) rocket was scheduled to lift off just before 5:30pm (12:00pm GMT) from the southern island of Sriharikota, one of two sites used by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to launch satellites.
• This latest model boasts a powerful engine that has been developed in India over many years. Programme managers hope the technology will reduce reliance on European engines that have propelled some of India's spacecraft in the past.
• The GSLV Mk III rocket will carry a satellite weighing more than three tonnes into a high orbit above Earth, a landmark achievement as India had struggled to match the heavier payloads of other space giants.
