We suggest you read a newspaper daily. In case if you are not able to read The Hindu, we will post important words every day from editorial section. These vocab words will help you a lot in your competitive exams.
1.Canvass (verb)
Meaning: To go through (a region) or go to (persons) to solicit votes or orders.
Example: Sources told The Hindu that one of the Rajya Sabha members, who canvassed support for the process, said members this time would not withdraw their names, which have already been submitted to Chairman Hamid Ansari. Mr. Ansari has admitted the motion.
2.Xenophobia (noun)
Meaning: dislike of or prejudice against people from other countries.
Example: This is borne out by the fact that French voters decisively rejected Marine Le Pen’s socially conservative campaign that attacked Islam, immigrants, and the European Union. In a Europe that has rapidly turned to racism, xenophobia and intolerance, yet another rejection of an extreme right-wing party is cause for celebration.
3.Felicitous (adjective)
Meaning: well chosen or suited to the circumstances.
Example: We hope France does not take this road, because the marked preference for individuals over parties has not proved too felicitous for democracy.
4.Aggravate (verb)
Meaning: make (a problem, injury, or offence) worse or more serious.
Example: Hundreds of British nationals had travelled to Syria, a country that is being bombed by the U.K., the U.S. and several other countries, to join the IS over the past three years. Many of them came back, and with the IS under growing pressure in Syria and Iraq many more battle-hardened men could return, aggravating the situation.
5.Largesse (noun)
Meaning: generosity in bestowing money or gifts upon others.
synonyms: generosity, liberality, munificence, bounty, bountifulness, beneficence, benefaction, altruism, charity, philanthropy, magnanimity, benevolence,
Example: Most of these bad loans are the result of largesse by public sector banks to large corporate groups, given without any consideration to the principles of sound lending. Hence, the resultant inability of the banks to recover either interest or the principal sum lent.
6.Feign (verb)
Meaning: pretend to be affected by (a feeling, state, or injury).
synonyms: simulate, fake, sham, affect, give the appearance of, make a show of, make a pretence of,
Example: The Reserve Bank cannot feign ignorance of or express surprise at the crises facing the banks.
7.Pertinent (adjective)
Meaning: relevant or applicable to a particular matter; apposite.
synonyms: relevant, to the point, apposite, appropriate, suitable, fitting, fit, apt, applicable, material, germane, to the purpose, apropos
Example: There are two issues that are pertinent about the commendation awarded to Major Leetul Gogoi of the Army’s 53 Rashtriya Rifles.
8.Abrogate (verb)
Meaning: repeal or do away with (a law, right, or formal agreement).
synonyms: repudiate, revoke, repeal, rescind, overturn, overrule, override, do away with, annul, cancel, break off, invalidate, nullify, void, negate, dissolve, countermand, veto, declare null and void, discontinue;
Example: Justice Mathew concluded that the only limitation to the amending power in the Constitution was that the Constitution could not be repealed or abrogated in the exercise of the power of amendment without substituting a mechanism by which the state was constituted and organised — “that limitation flows from the language of the Article (Article 368) itself.
9.Sporadic (adjective)
Meaning: occurring at irregular intervals or only in a few places; scattered or isolated.
synonyms: occasional, infrequent, irregular, periodical, periodic, scattered, patchy, isolated, odd, uneven.
Example: As in many other areas, truth tends to be sporadic here, and reality obscure. It would seem that after the dangerous 1990s, militancy has once again regained social acceptance.
10.Indictment (noun)
Meaning: a formal charge or accusation of a serious crime.
Synonyms: charge, accusation, arraignment, citation, summons.
Example: All said, the action of impeachment of a serving Chief Justice is yet another indictment of the Nepali political class, which needs to rise above petty and narrow interests after its momentous achievement of overturning the monarchy a decade ago.
