Hindu Newspaper Vocabulary Editorial for SBI PO 2017 Exam

In case if you are not able to read The Hindu, we will post important words every day from editorial section. These vocab words will help you a lot in your competitive exams.
1.Conscription (noun)
Meaning: compulsory enlistment for state service, typically into the armed forces.
Example: Kandulna explained that they had a recent recruitment drive, which is essentially a conscription for nearby villages. 

2.Lull (verb)
Meaning: calm or send to sleep, typically with soothing sounds or movements.
synonyms: soothe, quiet, hush, lullaby;
Example: During a lull in the conversation, he introduced himself as Platoon Commander Suresh, but I had recognised him already as Dimba Pahan, the brother of Jharkhand’s most famous Maoist, Kundan Pahan. 
3.Surreptitiously (adverb)
Meaning: in a way that attempts to avoid notice or attention; secretively.
Example: I was not supposed to identify Dimba Pahan; I had seen his photographs among a set surreptitiously clicked by a source.
4.Silhouette (noun)
Meaning: the dark shape and outline of someone or something visible in restricted light against a brighter background.
Example: "she paused to see its silhouette against the dimming sky"
synonyms: outline, contour(s), profile, delineation, form, shape, figure, shadow, features, lines, curves, configuration
Example: When the meeting ended, the youngsters lined up with their guns to pose for pictures against the setting sun, so that they could only be captured as silhouettes.
5.Continuum (noun)
Meaning: a continuous sequence in which adjacent elements are not perceptibly different from each other, but the extremes are quite distinct.
Example: These protests must also be seen in the continuum of agitations that first began in 1938 against the imposition of Hindi.
6.Frenetic (adjective)
Meaning: fast and energetic in a rather wild and uncontrolled way.
Example: "a frenetic pace of activity"
synonyms: frantic, wild, frenzied, hectic, fraught, feverish, fevered, mad, manic, hyperactive, energetic, intense, fast and furious, turbulent, tumultuous, confused, confusing;
Example: Such is the nature of frenetic cricket calendars that the Indian Premier League has already rolled in, its tenth edition commencing with the match between the defending champion, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and last year’s runner-up, Royal Challengers Bangalore, on April 5. 
7.Inadvertently (adverb)
Meaning: without intention; accidentally.
Example: "his name had been inadvertently omitted from the list"
synonyms: accidentally, by accident, unintentionally, unwittingly
Example: The IPL not only changed the way cricket was played, increasing the tempo and adding big bucks to the players’ kitty, it also inadvertently ushered in a course-correction for the BCCI. 
8.Peril (noun)
Meaning: serious and immediate danger.
Example: "you could well place us both in peril"
synonyms: danger, jeopardy, risk, riskiness, hazard, insecurity, uncertainty, menace, 
Example: prohibiting the sale of alcohol within 500 metres of national and State highways highlights the perils of polycentric adjudication. 
9.Deferential (adjective)
Meaning: showing deference; respectful.
Example: "people were always deferential to him"
synonyms: obsequious, humble, respectful, considerate, attentive, thoughtful
Example: However, this was not a case where the court was adjudicating upon the validity of administrative action, where a simple, deferential approach would be appropriate. 
10.Scaffolding (noun)
Meaning: a temporary structure on the outside of a building, made of wooden planks and metal poles, used by workmen while building, repairing, or cleaning the building.
Example: But the painters, perched on a shaky scaffolding in front of the building, barely seem to notice; so engrossed are they in their work.
