Theme : Needs driven. People Centred.
International Day of Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action was observed on 4 April 2017 across the world. The theme of the year 2017 is Needs driven. People Centred. Mine action ensures that landmines and explosive hazards in war-torn areas are found and destroyed, making possible the delivery of humanitarian assistance so that people and supplies reach those most in need. The United Nations Mine Action Strategy (UNMAS) coordinates teams to clear roads and runways of explosives, to block off weapons contaminated areas, and to train local people to demine and dispose of explosives.
K Prithika Yashini of TN becomes India's first transgender Sub-Inspector :
India's first transgender Sub-Inspector, K Prithika Yashini, has joined the Tamil Nadu police force after completing her one-year training. Yashini had moved the Madras High Court in 2015 after her application for the post was rejected. The court ordered the authorities to appoint her as an SI and asked for the inclusion of transgenders as a third category.

Holy festival Rama Navami celebrated across the country :
Rama Navami is being celebrated across the country today. It is a festival that celebrates the birthday of Lord Rama and falls on the ninth day of Navratri. President Pranab Mukherjee and Vice-President Mohammad Hamid Ansari have greeted the people on the occasion. In his message, President Mukherjee said, Lord Rama was an embodiment of great virtues and highest values.
CDS of salary implemented by IAF for its Air Warriors, Civilian employees :
Indian Air Force has implemented a pan India Centralised Disbursement System of salary for its Air Warriors and Civilian employees. Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal B S Dhanoa today launched the CDS at Air Force Central Accounts Office. Defence Ministry in a release said, this endeavor is in line with the Prime Minister’s directions on Digital India mission. It said, Indian Air Force has achieved 100 per cent digitisation and central online remittance of salaries.
5 day Namami Brahmaputra festival begins in Assam :
Curtains will come down today of the five day long Namami Brahmaputra festival in Assam. Namami Brahmaputra, the biggest river festival is being organized by the Assam government in 21 districts. Quoting official sources, Our Correspondent reports, an MoU to dredge the Brahmaputra will be signed this evening in Guwahati.
The much awaited MoU to dredge the Brahmaputra will be signed by the Assam government, Inland Waterways Authority of India and National Highways Authority of India. Union Road Transport minister Nitin Gadkari and several Chief Ministers of North East will witness the signing of the MoU.

Polythene products of below 50 microns banned by J&K :
Jammu and Kashmir government has imposed a ban on the use of polythene bags manufactured below fifty microns from today. Minister for Forest, Environment and Ecology, Choudhary Lal Singh told reporters in Jammu today that the State Government has put a blanket ban on polythene bags manufactured below fifty microns, in the state from today.
He said the Government is taking all the possible measures to prevent the state's environment and ecology from getting polluted.

Proposal for buying Barak missiles for Indian Navy set cleared by Centre :
Government has approved procurement of a fresh batch of Barak surface-to-air missiles for Naval warships to enhance India's maritime capability. A meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Arun Jaitley in New Delhi yesterday, approved capital acquisition proposals totalling over 860 crore rupees, including for the purchase of Barak missiles. Sources in the Defence Ministry said, the missiles will be procured under Buy Global category from Rafael Advance Defense Systems Limited of Israel at an approximate cost of around 500 crore rupees.

Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic has won the country's presidential election, securing 55% of votes. A self-professed pro-EU reformer, Vucic said the people had voted for his policy of joining the European Union while strengthening ties with traditional allies Russia and China. The win is believed to tighten his rule in the country where his Serbian Progressive party dominates parliament.

Trump signs resolution scrapping internet privacy rules :
US President Donald Trump today signed a resolution reversing a Barack Obama-era rule that restricted internet providers from sharing users' browsing history without their permission. The rule also required internet providers to secure the users' data from the hackers and notify users of any data breach. The Republicans argued the rules were confusing to consumers and unfair to internet providers.

New US H-1B visa states Computer programmer not as specialist :
The US has ruled that being a simple computer programmer would no longer qualify as a specialist profession, which is a must for the issue of a H-1B work visa. Through a new policy memorandum issued on March 31, superseding and rescinding its previous guidelines of December, 2000, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has ruled that an entry level computer programmer position would not generally qualify as a position in a specialty occupation.
Defence pact formalized between Canada, Ukraine :
Canada and Ukraine have formalised a defense pact that would see Canada continue to offer military training and share combat expertise. Canadian Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan met his Ukrainian counterpart Stepan Poltorak in Ottawa yesterday to sign the defence co-operation agreement.
Last month, Canada extended its mission providing weapons, tactical and survival training to Ukrainian troops through March 2019. The joint military training mission with Britain and the United States started in 2015 in response to a more assertive Russia's seizure of Crimea from Ukraine the year before.

Proposal on introducing Rs.200 notes cleared by RBI :
The board of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cleared a proposal to introduce banknotes of ₹200 denomination, according to multiple reports. The decision was reportedly taken at an RBI board meeting held in March. The process of printing the new ₹200 notes is likely to begin after June, once the government officially approves this new denomination, reports added.

SBI cuts lending rates by 0.15% :
Ahead of the Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy this week, the country's largest bank, State Bank of India has reduced its benchmark lending rate by 0 point 15 per cent. Base rate or the minimum lending rate of the bank has been reduced from 9.25 per cent to 9.1 per cent . The cut in SBI's base rate,is effective from 1st April. With this reduction, the equated monthly installments, or EMIs for the bank's new as well as existing borrowers who have taken housing or car loans at the base rate will come down by at least 0.15 per cent.

Researchers discovered Europe's first cave fish :
Researchers recently reported the discovery of the first European cave fish, first sighted by a cave diver in Germany as it was "strange looking". A live specimen was caught for research purposes. The fish shows cave-like adaptations including small inner curved eyes, colourless skin, long whisker-like sensory organs on heads and larger nostrils than fishes living closer to the surface.

MoUs worth ₹2.3 lakh crore signed between Indian, and Malaysian firms :
Indian and Malaysian firms have signed 31 pacts expecting investments of about $36 billion (around ₹2.3 lakh crore) in several sectors including construction, pharma, and education. The MoUs were exchanged in the presence of Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak. The Malaysian PM is currently on a six-day tour to India.

Agreements signed by Tripura with MoP for robust power distribution system :
Tripura has signed two agreements with the Ministry of Power to enhance power supply in distribution network. The agreements will enable to get the benefits under the Central government scheme. Giving this information today, Tripura's Power Minister Manik Dey said in Agartala that Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited has accepted the provision of Ujjwal Distribution Assurance Yojana (UDAY) and Transmission Service Agreement of Power Ministry to upgrade the existing transmission network to reduce Aggregate Technical and Commercial Loss.

Geeta Johari appointed as new DGP of Gujarat :
A 1982 batch senior IPS Officer Geeta Johari has been appointed as new Director General of Police of Gujarat. She will replace P.P. Pandey - acting DGP of the state who had resigned from the post yesterday, after a petition in Supreme Court. Mrs. Johari- presently working as Head of Gujarat Police Housing Corporation will become the first woman Director General of Police of Gujarat. She will retire in November 2017.
The decision of the appointment of Geeta Johari has been taken after series of high level meeting presided by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani in Gandhinagar. Minister of State for Home Pradip sinh Jadeja announced this decision at Gandhinagar a short while ago.

BP Kanungo sworn in as RBI Deputy Governor :
BP Kanungo took over as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in Mumbai today. The government on March 11 appointed Kanungo, who was holding the position of Executive Director of RBI, as Deputy Governor for a period of three years. He has worked in several functional areas of the banks such as foreign exchange management, banking and non-banking supervision, currency management, government and bank accounts and public debt.

Haryana Education Minister, Ram Bilas Sharma has been nominated as Chairman of Amateur Circle Kabaddi Federation of India for the next four years. The National Unit of the Federation yesterday unanimously elected him during the 28th Senior National Circle Kabaddi Championship organised at Panjab University, Chandigarh. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sharma said, he will make concerted efforts for ensuring greater recognition to circle Kabaddi at international level.

Famous Hindustani classical vocalist Kishori Amonkar passes away at age 84 :
Renowned Hindustani classical vocalist Kishori Amonkar passes away in Mumbai tonight. She was 84. Born in Mumbai in 1932, Amonkar was considered one of the foremost singers in the Hindustani tradition and is an innovator of the Jaipur gharana. She received a plethora of awards, including the Padma Bhushan in 1987 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2002.
