PM Narendra Modi to dedicate to nation India's longest road tunnel on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway

The Prime Minister will today dedicate to the nation, India's longest road tunnel, built on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. The 9.2 km long Chenani - Nashri Tunnel will reduce travel time between Jammu and Srinagar by upto two hours. It achieves a distance-reduction of 31 kilometres, bypassing snow-bound upper reaches.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi urges start up sector to explore areas where technology can help judiciary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today urged those involved with the start up sector to innovate on aspects where technology can help the judiciary. Speaking at the closing ceremony of Allahabad High Court's 150th anniversary celebrations in Allahabad, Mr Modi said, technology is playing a big role in this century and has a big scope in the judiciary as well. Mr Modi also said, over 1,200 obsolete laws have been scrapped by the Government since May 2014. He said, law is not only for the rich but also stands for the poor. The Prime Minister assured Chief Justice of India JS Khehar that government will make all efforts to back his resolve to reduce burden on judiciary and pendency of cases.

President Pranab Mukherjee laid the foundation stones of Rabindra Bhavan and Haj House at Jaipal Singh stadium complex in Ranchi today. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Mukherjee said, Rabindra Bhawan will establish its identity as a unique centre for promotion of art and culture. He said, Noble laureate Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore had special attachment with Jharkhand.

Govt plans to change security features of bank notes every 3-4 years

The government plans to change security features of higher denomination banknotes of 2,000 and 500 rupees every 3-4 years to check counterfeiting. The move comes in the wake of recovery of a large amount of fake Indian currency notes in last four months after demonetisation. The issue was discussed threadbare at a high-level meeting on Thursday attended by senior officials of the ministries of Finance and Home, including Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi.

Information Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu has said that the Centre is organising digidhan melas across the country to create awareness among the general public on the use of cashless transactions through internet. After inaugurating the mela in Nellore yesterday he said it is the aim of the Centre to make the society free of corruption and black money.

'Rashtriya Vayoshri' will make senior citizens life comfortable: TC Gehlot

Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Thawar Chand Gehlot has said that Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana will make life comfortable for senior citizens in the society. He said, the Centre will work for poor, old, infirm and will introduce schemes to benefit them. Mr Gehlot was speaking in Nellore after launching “Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana”, a scheme for providing Physical Aids and Assisted-living Devices for senior citizens belonging to BPL category, along with Information Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu. Mr. Gehlot said the devices will help the Senior Citizens to overcome their age related physical impairment and to lead a dignified and productive life with minimal dependence on care givers or other members of the family.

Colombia: 250 people died, 100 missing after heavy rain flooded Mocoa

In Colombia, at least 250 people died and hundreds are missing after heavy rain flooded the city of Mocoa in the country's southwest with mud and rocks. Security forces said, they are searching for the missing people and more than 1000 soldiers and police are involved in the rescue effort. The flood buried whole neighbourhoods and forced residents to flee their homes.

American singer & song writer Bob Dylan accepts Nobel literature award

American singer and song writer Bob Dylan has finally accepted his Nobel Prize for literature, more than three months after the awards ceremony. Swedish media reported he received his medal at a private event in Stockholm before a scheduled concert in the city. No further details were given. Swedish Academy officials previously said Dylan would not deliver his Nobel lecture, a traditional condition of receiving 900,000 dollars, prize money, at the event.

Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina calls for united fight against terrorism

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called for a united fight against terrorism terming it a new global vice. Speaking at the inauguration of the 136th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Dhaka last night, Hasina said humanity is facing new vices. Militancy and Terrorism costs lives and impedes peace and development. Emphasizing that militancy is not a problem of any one particular country, she said it needs to be fought unitedly and collectively. Hasina also emphasized the fight against hunger and malnutrition. Emphasizing that over 800 million people across the world suffer from malnutrition and a large number of children in developing countries suffer from stunted growth due to poor nutrition, she said a little bit of support, compassion and empathy can make the globe hunger-free

Five State Banks, Bharatiya Mahila Bank merge with SBI

Five associates and the Bharatiya Mahila Bank became part of the State Bank of India today, catapulting the country's largest lender to among the top 50 banks in the world. State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, State Bank of Hyderabad, State Bank of Mysore, State Bank of Patiala and State Bank of Travancore, besides Bharatiya Mahila Bank merged with SBI.

Indian economy expected to grow at 7.2% in 2017-18: FM Arun Jaitley

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said Indian economy is expected to grow at 7(point)2 percent in 2017-18 and 7(point)7 percent in 2018-19 according to IMF estimates. Mr Jaitley said this while delivering the key note address at the opening ceremony of the second New Development Bank Annual Board of Governors' meeting in New Delhi.

Oracle looking to acquire Accenture: Reports

American computer software major Oracle is looking to acquire management consulting company Accenture, according to reports. Oracle is also said to have hired consultants to look into a possible deal. While Accenture has a market cap of over $77 billion and employs around 4 lakh people worldwide, Oracle has a market cap of $184 billion.

India Open Series : PV Sindhu to take on Carolina Marin in summit clash

Ace Indian Shuttler P V Sindhu will take on Olympic champion Carolina Marin today in a summit clash in the India Open Super Series Badminton tournament at the Siri Fort Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. This will not be the first meeting between Sindhu and Marin since their classic Olympic clash in August, 2016. They locked horns at the Dubai World Superseries Finals in December last year in a group match which the Indian won in straight game. Sindhu got a hard-fought win 21-18, 14-21, 21-14 over World No 4 Korean Sung Ji Hyun in the semi-finals of the tournament yesterday.

Paes wins first title of season in Challenger tournament

Leander Paes today won his first title of the season, combining with Canadian Adil Shamasdin to lift the Leon Challenger Tour tennis tournament's men's doubles trophy after a straight-set win in Mexico. Paes and Shamasdin defeated Luca Margaroli (Switzerland) and Caro Zampieri (Brazil) 6-1, 6-4 in the title clash at the hard court event. With this win, Paes clinched his 20th ATP Challenger title. Paes has now won at least one title every year for the past 26 years.

Kenyan woman breaks 4 world records at Prague Half Marathon

Kenya's Joyciline Jepkosgei broke four world records to win the Prague Half Marathon on Saturday. Running her fifth half marathon, Jepkosgei completed the 21.1-kilometre distance in one hour, four minutes and 52 seconds, 14 seconds quicker than the previous world record. She also broke the 10 km, 15 km and 20 km world records in the race.
