No shortage of financial resources for central paramilitary forces: Home Ministry

The Union Home Ministry has made it clear that there is no shortage of financial resources for central paramilitary forces. In a statement, the Ministry said, the report that lack of financial resources is the reason for casualty of CRPF personnel in the battle against Left Wing Extremism is factually incorrect. It said, the funds released for Security Related Expenditure Scheme have increased from 575 crores rupees in 2011-12 to 675 crores rupees in 2016-2017. It is also incorrect to say that Chhattisgarh Police is in shambles.
India successfully test-fires Agni-III ballistic missile

India successfully carried out a fresh user trial of 3,000 kilometre range Agni-III ballistic missile from Abdul Kalam Island off Odisha coast today. The Strategic Forces Command with logistics support from Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) carried out the test from launch pad No. 4 of the Integrated Test Range. Defence sources said the test was aimed at re-establishing the operational effectiveness of the weapon system. The Agni-III, capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear warheads weighing up to 1.5 tonnes, is 17 metres tall with a two-metre diameter and weighs about 48 tonnes. DRDO sources said, the sleek missile, already inducted into the armed forces in June 2011, is equipped with hybrid navigation, guidance and control systems along with advanced on-board computer.

Haryana’s Ballabgarh renamed as Balramgarh

Manohar Lal Khattar, Chief Minister of Haryana, on 24 April 2017 announced the renaming of Ballabgarh town in Faridabad as Balramgarh. However, the process to change the name of the town in official records may take a few months. State’s MLA Moolchand Sharma and the Raja Nahar Singh Society had been demanding name change of the town from a long time. They wanted it to be renamed after its founder King Balram Singh.

Uttar Pradesh cancels 15 government holidays

The Uttar Pradesh government on 25 April 2017 cancelled as many as 15 public holidays in educational institutions that commemorated the birth and death anniversaries of eminent personalities. The decision was taken by the state’s cabinet during its meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.Students would instead be taught on these days about the great personalities through a two-hour programme.

Jharkhand Legislative Assembly to pass State GST bill today

A one-day special session of Jharkhand Legislative Assembly has been called today to pass the State Goods and Services Taxes, bill. Governor Draupadi Murmu has summoned a special session of the Assembly on the recommendation of the State Cabinet. Although ruling BJP led NDA has comfortable majority in the Assembly, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Saryu Rai called up JMM working President and leader of opposition Hemant Soren to seek his support in passing the GST bill.

NITI Aayog's vision: Houses, vehicles, ACs for all by 2032

NITI Aayog, the think tank of the Union Government, came up with a vision document 2031-32 that envisages a new India. The document envisages an India where every Indian will have houses with toilets, two-wheelers or cars, air-conditioners, power and digital connectivity in next 15 years, that is, by 2032.  The glimpse of the Vision 2031-32 was presented by NITI Aayog’s Vice-Chairperson Arvind Panagariya at the body’s governing council chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The India 2031-32: Vision, Strategy and Action Agenda also visualises a fully literate society with universal access to health care.

Union Government takes 10 new Swachh Iconic Places under Swachh BharatMission

The Union Government announced 10 Swachh Iconic Places to be taken under the Phase II of Swachh Iconic Places initiative. The announcement was made during second quarterly review meeting on the Swachh Iconic Places that was held at Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in Katra, Jammu and Kashmir. The aim of the Swachh Iconic Places is to make 100 places model Swachh Tourist Destinations that will enhance the experience for visitors from India and abroad.
PM Narendra Modi launches UDAN scheme, flags off first UDAN flight on Shimla-Delhi route

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched air regional connectivity scheme UDAN (Ude Desh ka Har Nagarik) during his day-long visit to Shimla. Under the scheme, the first UDAN flight was flagged off on Shimla-Delhi route. Simultaneously, PM Narendra Modi also launched the inaugural UDAN flights on Kadapa – Hyderabad and Nanded - Hyderabad routes. Prior to the launch of this UDAN flight, Kingfisher was the only airline that operated regular flights between Delhi and Shimla till September 2012.
India notifies conformity to UN resolution of imposing sanctions on North Korea

India notified the compliance of the United Nations (UN) resolution of imposing sanctions on North Korea. The sanctions include prevention of direct or indirect supply, sale, transfer or export of all weaponry and related material through its territories or by its nationals to North Korea. The resolution bans supply, sale or export of other items, materials, equipment, goods and technology which could contribute to nuclear- related, ballistic missile-related or other weapons of mass destruction-related programmes of North Korea.

NASA’s Cassini spacecraft successfully travels between Saturn and its rings

Recently, NASA’s Cassini spacecraft completed its final close flyby of Saturn’s moon Titan and has now started its final set of 22 orbits before plunging into Saturn on September 15, 2017, and thus completing its 20-year long journey. Already, Cassini has dived successfully through the space between Saturn and its rings, a region no spacecraft has been before. It will perform another 21 dives through the same gap and will send more detailed information about Saturn and its rings. These series of 22 manoeuvres that brings Cassini closer to Saturn’s surface before plunging into it is called as the spacecraft’s “grand finale.”

ISRO launches solar calculator app

ISRO has launched a solar calculator app that can calculate the benefits of installing solar panels in different regions of the country. The app has been created by the Space Application Center (SAC) facility of ISRO following the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE)’s request. The app comes handy for installation of Photovoltaic (PV) for tapping of solar energy.

Wikipedia founder to launch new site to tackle fake news

The founder of Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales is going to launch Wikitribune, a news site aimed at tackling the spread of false information, a major issue faced by a majority of other sites such as Facebook. The site would be jointly run by journalists and a community of volunteers who will verify the stories before publishing them. The same was confirmed by Wales through a video posted on the site. The site would be 100 per cent advertisement free.

SEBI allows options trading in commodities market

Capital market regulator, SEBI has allowed options trading in commodity derivatives. SEBI's board approved the proposal at its meeting in Mumbai, today. Ajay Tyagi, Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India described it as a very big step towards further deepening the commodities derivatives market. SEBI's board also approved issuance of unified license to brokers for trading in equities and commodities markets. Bolstering steps to curb any flow of illicit funds in the capital markets, the regulator also decided to bar resident and non-resident Indians from making investments through participatory notes.
Air India opens booking for Shimla-New Delhi flight under UDAN

Air India said today it has opened booking for its first flight under the Regional Connectivity Scheme to be operated on the Shimla-New Delhi route by its subsidiary Alliance Air.   Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate the maiden flight under the government's ambitious plan to provide connectivity to far and remote areas of the country. Over 45 unserved and under-served airports would be connected under the scheme- UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik)- that seeks to make flying more affordable.

Scientists create ‘Artificial Womb’

Researchers have created a fluid-filled transparent container called the Biobag to simulate how foetuses float in amniotic fluid inside the uterus of their mothers. Researchers tested five lambs with a biological age corresponding to 23-week human premature babies in the artificially created womb like device. The premature lambs were delivered by C-section and were immediately placed into the womb-like device.

Srishti Kaur crowned Miss Teen Universe 2017

India’s Srishti Kaur on 26 April 2017 was crowned Miss Teen Universe 2017. The event was held at the Ruben Dario National Theatre in Managua, Nicaragua. Kaur, who studies in London College of Fashion, succeeds Nieveles Gonzalez from Puerto Rico. Kaur emerged victorious among 25 other contestants from around the world in the annual beauty pageant. Canada’s Samantha Pierre and Ary Trava  from Mexico were the runners-up in the event.

Nita Ambani made Member of IOC's Olympic Channel Commission

Nita Ambani in April 2017 was made a member of two important commissions of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) governing body. Ambani was made as a member of the prestigious Olympic Channel and and Olympic Education Commission . She replaced International Paralympic Committee President Philip Craven to be one of the 16 members of the Olympic Channel Commission headed by United States Olympic Committee Chairman Lawrence Francis Probst.
Rajiv Rai Bhatnagar appointed as Director General of Central Reserve Police Force

The Union Government on 26 April 2017 appointed Rajiv Rai Bhatnagar as the Director General (DG) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). He will retain the post till 31 December 2019 i.e. the date of his superannuation, or till further orders, whichever is earlier. Bhatnagar was at present serving as the Director General of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). On the other hand, Union Government also appointedR. K. Pachnanda as the Director General of Indo-Tibetan Border Police

PV Sindhu storms into quarters of Badminton Asia Championships

Rio Olympics Silver medalist PV Sindhu today stormed into the quarterfinals of the Badminton Asia Championships at Wuhan in China. Sindhu, who is seeded fourth in the tournament, defeated unseeded Japanese Aya Ohori in straight games, 21-14, 21-15. For a place in the semi-finals, Sindhu will play eighth placed Bingjiao He of China tomorrow. Saina Nehwal had bowed out of the tournament in the opening round yesterday. In the Men's Singles, Ajay Jayaram today crashed out after losing in the pre-quarterfinals.
Maria Sharapova makes winning return to tennis after 15-month doping ban

In Tennis, former World No 1 Maria Sharapova made a winning comeback to the sports following her 15-month ban for doping.  The Russian Tennis player defeated Italian Roberta Vinci 7-5, 6-3 in the first round of the Stuttgart Open in Germany. She will now face compatriot Ekaterina Makarova in the second round today. Three-time Stuttgart champion Maria Sharapova received a controversial wild card for the German tournament, after more than a year out following her suspension for banned substances. Her initial two-year suspension was reduced to 15 months and Sharapova is now without a world ranking.
Bollywood actor Vinod Khanna passes away at 70

Veteran Hindi Cinema actor Vinod Khanna passed away at the age of 70, in Mumbai this morning. The actor was suffering from cancer. Khanna, a sitting Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Gurdaspur constituency in Punjab, was recently admitted to Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre in Girgaon, Mumbai. Khanna has starred in over 100 films in a career spanning over five decades. Considered as one of the most powerful and debonair actor, Khanna started off as a villain and went on to become a star as a leading man in dozens of films including Mere Apne, Amar Akbar Anthony, Khoon Pasina, Parvarish, Insaaf, Muqaddar ka Sikandar, Qurbani and Satyamev Jayaate. In the 1980s, at the peak of his career, he quit films to join Osho's ashram.
