Biggest conventional bomb in India is known as 'SPICE'

The biggest conventional bomb that India has is called the 'Smart Precise Impact and Cost Effective' or SPICE bomb, which is under the command of the Indian Air Force. It is manufactured by Israeli firm Rafael Advanced Defence Systems Ltd. The 2,000-pound bomb is a precision-guided bomb that can be carried on French-origin Mirage 2000 fighter jets

Centre to issue advisory against service charge on food bills

The Centre plans to issue an advisory to states asking them to crack down against unfair imposition of service charge on food and drink bills. Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said the service charge does not exist and it is being wrongly charged. He said his ministry has prepared an advisory on this issue and sent it to the Prime Minister's Office for approval.

Andhra CM lays foundation stone for Rs.100-crore Ambedkar park

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday laid the foundation stone for the Rs.100-crore Dr BR Ambedkar memorial park in Amaravati, marking the 126th birth anniversary of the architect of Indian Constitution. Naidu also laid the foundation stone for a 126-ft statue of Ambedkar that will come up in the park, which would be spread across 20 acres.

UP govt, Centre sign MoU for 'Power for All' scheme

Uttar Pradesh government and the Centre have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the 'Power for All' scheme in the state. The aim of this scheme is to ensure 24-hour quality power supply in the state by October 2018 and electric connection to every house and agriculture field by 2019. The agreement was inked in presence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Minister of State for Power Piyush Goyal and UP Power Minster Shrikant Sharma. This agreement aims to ensure that consumers get quality electricity at an affordable price.

Govt mulling revival of sea route for Haj pilgrims: Naqvi

Minister of State for Minority Affairs, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the Centre is mulling revival of sending Haj pilgrims via sea-route to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.  Addressing a Haj training programme at Haj House in Mumbai today, Mr Naqvi said high-level committee, formed by the government to frame the Haj Policy 2018 according to the Supreme Court’s order, is exploring reviving the option of sending pilgrims via sea route to Jeddah.

Himachal police depends on outdated weapons: CAG

Himachal Pradesh police depends on outdated weapons to tackle crime in the state, a CAG report has stated. Most police stations continue to depend on obsolete weapons like .303 rifles and .455 revolvers instead of the prescribed 7.62 mm SLRs, it added. The report pointed out 35% shortage in the number of SLRs as on March 2016.

I-T dept to investigate over 60,000 individuals in 2nd phase of Operation Clean Money

The Income Tax department today launched the second phase of 'Operation Clean Money' to detect black money post-demonetisation. Over 60,000 individuals will be investigated in the second phase. Policy-making body of the department, the Central Board of Direct Taxes, CBDT said it has detected undisclosed income of over 9,334 crore rupees between November 9, 2016 till February 28 this year. The notes ban was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 8 last year.

North Korea warns US to end military hysteria or face consequences

North Korea warned the United States to end its military hysteria today or face retaliation as a US aircraft carrier group steamed toward the region amid fears the North may conduct a sixth nuclear weapons test. Hundreds of military trucks carrying cheering and singing people headed for a parade marking the 105th anniversary of the birth of the country's founding father. Celebrations that coincide with the latest threat by the reclusive State against the United States and President Donald Trump. It said the Trump administration's serious military hysteria has reached a dangerous phase which can no longer be overlooked.

Senegal declares 3 days of mourning as fire death toll rises

In Senegal, three days of mourning announced for the victims of a massive fire at a Muslim religious retreat this week, as the death toll from the catastrophe rose to 25. The blaze broke out on Wednesday afternoon as worshippers belonging to the Tijaniyya Muslim group gathered near the town of Medina Gounass in southeastern Senegal, engulfing straw shelters erected for the pilgrims.

More than 2,000 migrants rescued in Mediterranean

More than 2,000 migrants trying to reach Europe were plucked from the Mediterranean yesterday in a series of dramatic rescues and one person was found dead, officials and witnesses said. An Italian coast guard spokesman said 19 rescue operations by the coast guard or ships operated by non-governmental organizations had saved a total of 2,074 migrants on 16 rubber dinghies and three small wooden boats. The medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said in a tweet that one teenager was found dead in a rubber boat whose passengers were rescued by its ship Aquarius.
Air China to suspend Beijing-Pyongyang flights

China's flag carrier, Air China, will suspend flights from China's capital Beijing to North Korea's capital Pyongyang starting from Monday. The last flight heading for Pyongyang departed yesterday. Air China is the only Chinese airline which offers flights to Pyongyang apart from North Korean carrier Air Koryo.

Fully-airconditioned Dhaka-Kolkata Maitree Express inaugurated

In Bangladesh, a fully-airconditioned Dhaka-Kolkata Maitree Express with improved coaches was inaugurated in Dhaka yesterday. Bangladesh Railways Minister Mazibul Hoque and Indian High Commissioner Harsh Vardhan Shringla inaugurated the train on the first day of Bangla New Year in the country. Speaking on the occasion, the Indian envoy said they are working to boost comfort for train passengers between Dhaka and Kolkata and have planned to speed up customs and immigration clearance this year.

BHIM-Aadhaar app to allow payment using fingerprint launched

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday launched BHIM-Aadhaar platform, the merchant interface of the BHIM App, that will allow people to make payments through the fingerprint scanner. The service will use Aadhaar numbers linked to bank accounts, and payments will be finalised only after customers keep their finger on the merchant's biometric machine connected to the app through a smartphone.

Service tax to move up from 15% to 18% under GST, says Adhia

Services sector could attract a higher tax rate of 18% from the current 15% under GST, thus making services “slightly” more expensive, Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia said. However, those exempted at present, like healthcare, education and agriculture, are likely to remain so. He also said that some services which currently have less than 15% tax rate may attract lower rates.
Forex reserves down USD 956.4 mn to USD 368.998 bn

Country's foreign exchange reserves declined by USD 956.4 million to USD 368.998 billion for the week ended April 7 due to fall in foreign currency assets. The Reserve Bank said that Foreign currency assets (FCAs), a major component of the overall reserves, dipped by USD 951 million to USD 345.367 billion in the reporting week.  RBI said Gold reserves remained unchanged at USD 19.869 billion. The apex bank also stated that the special drawing rights with the International Monetary Fund were down by USD 3.1 million to USD 1.443 billion, while India's reserve position with the Fund, too, decreased by USD 2.3 million to USD 2.318 billion.

Solar powered device that can pull water out of dry air made

Scientists at UC Berkeley have demonstrated a technology capable of extracting water out of dry air using solar power. Using one kilogram of a metal-organic framework, scientists created a prototype capable of generating 2.8 litres of water from the air within 12 hours. The humidity during that period ranged from 20-30%, conditions as arid as a desert, the scientists said.
Google's new tool offers style suggestions to users

Google has launched a new feature for Android called 'Style Ideas' that will offer style suggestions to users via images. When users browse a product, it will showcase images of models sporting the product, thereby showing how it can be worn in real life. Users will also see an expanded section for "similar items" while searching for apparel products.

In Badminton, Kidambi Srikanth and Sai Praneeth will play their semi-final matches of Singapore Open Superseries tournament today. While Srikanth will clash with Indonesia’s Anthony Ginting, Praneeth will play Lee Dong-Keun of South Korea. Srikanth and Praneeth are the only Indians left in the tournament.
Pankaj Advani beats Sourav Kothari to win Asian Billiards Championship title

Sixteen-time world champion Pankaj Advani today won his sixth Asian Billiards title and seventh overall Asian championship. The ace cueist defeated his compatriot Sourav Kothari 6-3 in an entertaining final of the Asian Billiards Championship in Chandigarh.
