PM Narendra Modi to inaugurate Chenani-Nashri tunnel

  • Amid multi-tiered security, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will today dedicate to the nation India's longest road tunnel+ on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, making it operational for traffic.
  • The new 10.8 kilometre Chenani-Nashri road tunnel+ is the longest highway tunnel in Asia
  • A high alert has also been issued ahead of the Prime Minister's visit, even as vigilance at the border and at vital installations in J&K has been stepped up.
  • The tunnel will save fuel worth nearly Rs 99 crore a year. "Rs 27 lakh worth of fuel is likely to be saved per day

Miami Open: Johanna Konta defeats Caroline Wozniacki

  
  • Johanna Konta defeated Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-3 to win the Miami Open on Saturday — the biggest title won by a British woman in 40 years.
  • Konta, who had never won an elite WTA premier mandatory event, will move to number seven in the world rankings with the victory.
  • No British woman had ever won a premier mandatory event since the elite tier was introduced in 2009 and this was only the second time that Konta had even qualified for the Miami tournament.

SpaceX successfully launches first recycled rocket

  • SpaceX successfully launched and then retrieved its first recycled rocket Thursday, a historic feat and the biggest leap yet in its bid to drive down costs and speed up flights.
  • It was the first time SpaceX founder Elon Musk tried to fly a booster that soared before on an orbital mission. 
  • his particular first stage landed on an ocean platform almost exactly a year ago after a space station launch for NASA. SpaceX refurbished and tested the 15-story booster, still sporting its nine original engines. It nailed another vertical landing at sea Thursday once it was finished boosting the satellite for the SES company of Luxembourg. SpaceX employees jammed outside Mission Control at the Hawthorne, California, company headquarters cheered loudly every step of the way - and again when the satellite reached its proper orbit.


US Astronaut Peggy Whitson Breaks Sunita Williams' Record For Most Spacewalks By A Woman

  • American astronaut Peggy Whitson made history when she floated outside the International Space Station on Thursday, breaking the record for the most spacewalks by a woman. Ms Whitson, 57, made her eighth career spacewalk, surpassing the record of seven previously held by American Suni Williams.
  • The spacewalk formally began at 7:29 am (1129 GMT) when Ms Whitson and her NASA colleague Shane Kimbrough switched their spacesuits to battery power before venturing outside the airlock and into the vacuum of space.
