Directions: Each of the questions below consists of a question and two statements numbered I and II given below it. You have to decide whether the data provided in the statements are sufficient to answer the question. Read both the statements and give answer.
Ques 6) For a badminton tournament, 2 players are to be selected from a group of ‘n’ players to form a doubles team. What is the value of n?

(i) The number of ways in which 2 players can be selected from a group of ‘n’ players is 21.
(ii) The number of ways of selecting 2 players from a group of ‘n’ players is the same as selecting 5persons from a group of ‘n’ players.

Ques 10) In a phone directory, 20% of the names start with A. The names that start with surnames are 25%, what percent of names start with A but not with the surname.?

(i).The names that start with surnames and with C are 10% of all the names in the directory and those that start with surnames but not with B are 15% of all the names in the directory.
(ii) The names that start with surnames and with B are 10% of all the names in the directory and those that start with the surnames but not with C are 10% of all the names on the directory.

Solution with Explanation

Solution 1

+(1*2*3) , + (4*5*6) , + (7*8*9), + (10*11*12)
5 + (1*2*3) = 5+6=11
11+ (4*5*6)=11+(120) = 131
131+ (7*8*9)= 131+504 = 635
So 635 + (10*11*12) = 635+ 1320 = 1955

Solution 2

The series follows a pattern of multiplying the number with a prime number and subtracting the same from the resultant after multiplication, prime numbers in descending order starting from 11.

*11-11 , *7-7 , *5-5 , *3-3 , *2-2
10 *11-11= 99
99*7-7=686
686*5-5=3425
3425*3-3=10272
10272*2-2=20542

Solution 3

22, 24 , 12 , 8.4 , 9.2, x This series is really simple but doesn’t strikes our minds at once, the pattern is

÷1+2 , ÷3+4 , ÷5+6 , ÷7+8 , ÷9+10
So
22/1+2=24
24/3+4=12
12/5+6=8.4
8.4/7+8= 9.2
9.2/9+10=11.02

Solution 4

77, 28, 64 , 39 , 55 , x
77- (72) = 28 ,
28+(62) =64 ,
64- (52) = 39 ,
39+ (42) = 55,
Answer : 55- (32)=46

Clearly, (i) only gives the answer
Similarly (ii) only gives the answer
And (iii) gives the answer

(iii) gives , speed =200/10 m/s = 20 m/s = 20 x 18/5 = 72 km/hr

(ii) gives,time taken = 558/72 = 7 hrs 45 min
So the train will reach city X at 3 p.m.
Hence , (i) is redundant.

Solution 9

(i) SP =Rs. 12350, gain = 23.5 %
CP = Rs.( 100/ 123.5 x 12350) = Rs. 10000
(ii) MP = 130% of Rs.10000 = Rs.13000
From (i) and (ii), discout= Rs.(13000-12350) = 650
Discount % = 650/ 13000*100 = 5%
(iii) gives CP = Rs. 10000
So (ii) and (iii) give the answer
Correct answer is e

Solution 10

From statement (i)
The names that start with surnames and with C are 10%
With B are 25% - 15% = 10%
i.e. 5% of the names that start with the surnames do not start with B or C , but we also do not know how many of them start with A
Hence we cannot answer this question

From statement (ii)
The names that start with surnames and with B are 10%
With C are 25% - 10% = 15%
Not a single name starts with the surname and the letter A, thus we can answer the question.
