Hindu Newspaper Vocabulary for SBI PO 2017

Hello, Greetings!! SBI PO 2017 will commence in the month of APRIL 2017. In order to help and guide all of you, we're going to post VOCABULARY BASED ON THE HINDU NEWSPAPER. In all the competitive exams, Vocabulary questions are asked from newspapers. 
Meaning: the state of being very poor; extreme poverty.
Synonym: pennilessness, impecuniousness, impoverishment, indigence,
Antonym: wealth, affluence
Sentence: "he couldn't face another year of penury"


Meaning: a proverb or short statement expressing a general truth.
Synonym: saying, maxim, axiom, proverb,
Sentence: "the old adage ‘out of sight out of mind’"
Meaning: the quality of being powerfully and mysteriously attractive or fascinating.
Synonym: attraction, lure, draw, pull, appeal, glamour
Sentence: people for whom gold holds no allure"
Meaning: involving immoral or dishonourable actions and motives; arousing moral distaste and contempt., dirty or squalid.
Synonym: sleazy, seedy, seamy, unsavoury,
Antonym: immaculate, high-minded, respectable
Sentence: "the story paints a sordid picture of bribes and scams"
Meaning: a temporary stay., stay somewhere temporarily.
Synonym: stay, visit, stop, stopover, residence;
Sentence: "her sojourn in Rome"
6.Orthodox
Meaning: following or conforming to the traditional or generally accepted rules or beliefs of a religion, philosophy, or practice.
Synonym: conservative, traditional, observant, conformist
Antonym: unconventional, unorthodox, nonconformist
Sentence: "Burke's views were orthodox in his time"
7.Pernicious
Meaning: having a harmful effect, especially in a gradual or subtle way.
Synonym: harmful, damaging, destructive, injurious
Antonym: beneficial, benign, favourable
Sentence: "the pernicious influences of the mass media"
8.Peremptory
Meaning: insisting on immediate attention or obedience, especially in a brusquely imperious way.
Synonym: high-handed, brisk, abrupt, summary, commanding, authoritative,
Antonym: humble, meek, modest, unassuming
Sentence: "‘Just do it!’ came the peremptory reply"
Meaning: absorb or assimilate (ideas or knowledge).
Synonym: assimilate, absorb, soak up, take in, digest
Antonym: abstain, fast
Sentence:"if one does not imbibe the culture one cannot succeed"
10.Laggard
Meaning: a person who makes slow progress and falls behind others.
Synonym: straggler, loiterer, lingerer,
Sentence: "staff were under enormous pressure and there was no time for laggards"
