World Sleep Day - 18th March
Theme : 'Sleep Soundly, Nurture Life'
World Sleep Day is an annual event, intended to be a celebration of sleep and a call to action on important issues related to sleep, including medicine, education, social aspects and driving. It is organized by the World Sleep Day Committee of World Sleep Society (founded by WASM and WSF) and aims to lessen the burden of sleep problems on society through better prevention and management of sleep disorders. As of 2016, World Sleep Day had a total of 394 delegates in 72 countries around the globe.
French aerospace giant Airbus will set up India’s first full flight simulator and training centre near the Delhi Airport. The airport has signed a land license agreement with Airbus India to set up the facility. The training centre will be spread over almost 7,000 square metre and is expected to be operational by 2018-end with two full flight simulators.
Chandigarh administration has declared the state highways as 'major district roads' in order to avoid closure of liquor vends in the city. This comes after Supreme Court directed all states and union territories to close liquor vends on all national and state highways. All major roads in Chandigarh were state highways, as per a notification issued nearly 20 years ago.
A Class 11 student from Arunachal Pradesh, Anang Tadar, has invented a gadget called 'Goggle For Blind' (G4B). The gadget will help blind people in detecting objects through sound waves and echoes, a technique used by bats. Global bodies like UNICEF have reportedly shown interest in launching G4B in the market and Anang has been asked to create prototypes.

Member of Parliament (MP) Sushmita Dev has started an online petition to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley for removal of tax on sanitary napkins. Mentioning tax-free condoms and contraceptives, the petition states that the tax on sanitary napkins is unfair because "women are being taxed 12 months a year, for about 39 years on a process they have no control over".

Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal has decided to donate ₹6 lakh, ₹50,000 each, to the families of the 12 Central Reserve Police Force jawans killed in an attack in Chhattisgarh last week. Saina, who turned 27 on Friday, said she is pained by what happened in Chhattisgarh and this is a small contribution to the families who have suffered irreparable loss.
Hollywood actor Ryan Gosling, who starred in Oscar-winning film 'La La Land', has featured on the cover of the March issue of men's magazine 'GQ India'. He is wearing a grey polo T-shirt with grey pants, accessorising his look with a watch. The magazine has called the edition 'The Big Hollywood Issue' and it has described Ryan as 'Super Suave'.
Korean company Posco requests Odisha govt to take back land acquired for steel plant :
South Korean steelmaker Posco has asked the Odisha government to take back the 2 thousand 7 hundred acre land acquired for setting up of a steel plant in Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha, citing its failure to start work for the project.
Briefing the newsmen in Bhubaneswar today, state industries Minister Debi Prasad Mishra said that for the proposed steel plant project at Paradip, this land was acquired by IDCO on behalf of the Industries department during 2008-10. He said, a letter was sent earlier to the South Korean steel company asking it to clear 82 crore rupee dues towards cess. In its reply, the company has said it is not interested to take possession of the acquired land and pay the remaining amount.

Assam govt approves proposal of 7th Pay Commission :
The Assam government has approved the recommendation of the Seventh Pay Commission constituted for over 4 lakh employees.
The state cabinet in a meeting held last evening in Guwahati decided to implement the recommendation of the Commission. The implementation will make state exchequer bear an additional burden of over three thousand crore rupees in the next financial year. The cabinet also decided to give the six months’ arrear salary to its employees before the ensuing Bohag Bihu.

Conference on 'Make in India' to be conducted by US group in Houston :
In the US, an American business group will organise a conference in Houston to discuss the latest developments and best practices of doing business in India. The two-day 'Houston - India' conference will begin from March 24.
The theme of the Conference is 'Make in India - The Inside Story'. The organisers said, the focus of the conference is to share today's India story with the audience in Texas who are interested in investing in India, by the people who are playing an important role in shaping up the modern India.

Voice recognition to be used by Germany to identify origins of migrant :
Germany is to begin testing new voice recognition software that can tell which country migrants without documentation come from.
The Federal Office for Migrants and Refugees said the automated new system would begin within two weeks. The aim is to detect Arabic-speaking migrants claiming to be Syrian to increase their chances of asylum. Officials told news agency that the new software will run alongside techniques already in use to establish a person's identity.

Ministry gives approval for RBI to print Rs.10 plastic notes :
The government on Friday said the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has been authorised to conduct field trials of plastic notes of ₹10. Minister of State for Finance Arjun Ram Meghwal said “it has been decided” to conduct the trial with plastic notes at five locations of the country. He further said plastic notes are expected to last longer than cotton substrate based banknotes.

Kerala based ESAF Small Finance Bank launched its operations :
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan launched the bank, the State’s first private sector bank since Independence, at a function in Thrissur on Friday. The bank’s ATM-cum-debit cards, official Web site and digital banking channels were also launched simultaneously. Promoted by ESAF Microfinance and Investments, the bank proposes to open 85 branches in the first year.
The newly-launched ESAF Small Finance Bank will offer interest rates between 5.75 and 9 per cent for term deposits of varying maturities. For savings deposits, the rates will vary from 6 to 7 per cent, based on the outstanding balance in the account. Senior citizens will be entitled to an additional 0.05 per cent for term deposits.

Japan launches satellite to monitor North Korea's land and maritime movements :
Japan launched a new satellite to track land and maritime movements in North Korea. The satellite will also be able to conduct surveys on the weapons programme of the secretive nuclear-armed state.
The launch project was conducted jointly by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the aerospace manufacturer. The move comes shortly after North Korea launched four banned ballistic missiles into the sea off Japan's north-west coast, alarming both Japan and the United States.

Deal signed between India and Russia on Sukhoi-30 jets' maintenance :
India on Friday signed two agreements with Russia for long-term maintenance and technical support for the Indian Air Force's Sukhoi-30 fighter jets. India has inducted 240 Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft out of the 272 contracted from Russia. "Russian companies should come forward for technology transfer to Indian companies," Defence Minister Arun Jaitley said.

Senior UN official Rima Khalaf quits after 'apartheid' Israel report pulled :
A senior UN official has resigned over the withdrawal of a report accusing Israel of imposing an apartheid regime on Palestinians, saying powerful member states pressured the world body and its Chief with vicious attacks and threats.
United Nations Under-Secretary General and Executive Secretary for the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), Rima Khalaf, announced her resignation at a news conference in Beirut after UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres asked for the report to be taken off the ESCWA website.
National racing champ Ashwin Sundar charred to death as car catches fire :
National racing champion Ashwin Sundar and his wife died in a car accident in Chennai on Friday night. The couple was travelling in a BMW Z4 at high speed with Ashwin driving when the car reportedly rammed into a tree and burst into flames. The 27-year-old racer had previously driven for German racing team Ma-Con Motorsport in 2008.
