Merger between BSNL and MTNL proposed by parliamentary panel :
A parliamentary panel has suggested the merger of state-run telecom firms Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL) for their long-term survival. The committee said the merger would give both the entities a chance to compete against private sector players. The Telecom Department informed the panel that both firms are in financial losses and face declining revenues.
Bharat Petroleum planning to start a road trip startup 'Happy Roads' :
State-controlled Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) is planning to enter the travel business with the launch of a startup called 'Happy Roads', that would help travellers plan and execute road trips. BPCL is looking to launch the startup's app in about two months. The app will also give real time updates on travel destinations and suggest nearby places to explore.
3-day Haryana Sahitya Sangam starts today at Panchkula :
In Haryana, the first ever three-day Haryana Sahitya Sangam today began at Indradhanush Auditorium, Panchkula. Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal inaugurated the Sahitya Sangam, in which more than 2,000 scholars, writers and thinkers from across the country are participating. The literary festival is being organised as part of the Haryana Swarna Jayanti celebrations.

International Buddhist conference commenced in Bihar :
In Bihar, three day International Buddhist conference began at Nava Nalanda Mahavihara, Rajgir in Nalanda district of the state today.
Religious leader Dalai Lama and Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Mahesh Sharma jointly inaugurated this conference. Dalai Lama and other dignitaries released Pali Tripitaka book at the inaugural session of the conference. Over one thousand delegates from 35 countries including Sri Lanka, Nepal, Singapore and Indonesia are participating in it.

Gram panchayats in West Bengal got fund of USD210 million from World Bank Group :
The World Bank Group (WBG) approved USD 210 million loan to strengthen gram panchayats (GPs) in West Bengal. The loan amount will be utilized for the implementation of the Phase II of the West Bengal Support to Institutional Strengthening of Gram Panchayat Program (ISGPP-II). The ISGPP-II will support all 3,342 GPs in the state to eIectively utilize untied and discretionary funds that are being provided to them under the inter-governmental fiscal transfer system.

World Bank Board approves USD 175 million National Hydrology Project of India :
The World Bank Board on 16 March 2017 approved the USD 175 million National Hydrology Project to strengthen capacity of institutions to assess water situation in their regions. This loan from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) of World Bank will have a 6-year grace period and a maturity of 23 years. The project is aimed at assisting the institutions in reducing the vulnerability to recurring flood and droughts.

Indrani Das Indian-American teen wins 2017 Regeneron Science Talent Search
Indrani Das, an Indian-American high school student, in second week of March 2017 won the 2017 Regeneron Science Talent Search bagging the top award of USD 250000. Das won the prestigious high school science and mathematics competition for her new approach to neurological damage. The Indian-American teen is a student at the Academy for Medical Science Technology in Hackensack

March16 recognised as Indian-American Appreciation Day in US state of Kansas :
The US state of Kansas has recognised March 16 as 'Indian-American Appreciation Day' to honour an Indian techie who was killed last month in a racially-motivated hate crime. Srinivas Kuchibhotla was killed when a US Navy veteran Adam Purinton opened fire at him and his friend Alok Madasani in Olathe on February 22.
Madasani and American national Ian Grillot were injured in the attack. Asserting that the senseless act of violence will not divided or define the state, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback said, the unique contribution of Indian community has made Kansas a better place.

G20 Finance ministers, central bank chiefs to meet in Germany :
Finance Ministers and central bank chiefs from the Group of 20 economies will start a meeting in southwestern Germany today. Reports say, all eyes are on whether they can agree to work together to promote free trade despite the new protectionist tendency of the United States.
The gathering in Baden-Baden will be the first occasion for the leaders to discuss global economic challenges since US President Donald Trump took office in January.

Pact signed between Bandhan Bank and Avenues India to enhance customer support :
Bandhan Bank Ltd in March 2017 announced the signing of an agreement with Avenues India Pvt Ltd, the leading payment solution provider in India. The agreement signed at the Bandhan Bank headquarters in Kolkata. The pact was signed to provide the merchants with seamless access to the Point of Sale (POS) and the payment gateway products.
The partnership will help merchants to have speedier and more direct access to POS machines, payment gateways and competitive financing options. The pact also asks the two parties to cooperate and benefit from each other’s networks, customers, systems, techniques and expertise for the purpose of enhancing customers’ experience.

Agreement signed between India and Brazil to protect rights of detached workers :
India and Brazil signed a social security agreement on 16 March 2017 in Brazil's capital Brasilia, exempting detached workers of the two countries from making social security contribution in either country, as long as they were making such contributions in their own respective nations.
The text was signed between the Indian delegation led by Joint Secretary of the External Affairs Ministry, K Nagaraj Naidu and Brazilian delegation led by Benedito A Brunca, Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Government of Brazil. The same was confirmed through a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs.

US President Donald Trump's pick Seema Verma was sworn-in as the administrator of the government's Centres for Medicare & Medicaid Services by placing her hand on the Hindu holy book Bhagwad Gita. The Indian-American, who was confirmed by the Senate in a 55-43 vote on Monday, has helped redesign Medicaid programs in several US states.

Senior IAS officer Karan Avtar Singh appointed as the Chief Secretary of Punjab. His appointment came after the swearing-in ceremony of Captain Amarinder Singh as Punjab Chief Minister. Avtar Singh succeeded Sarvesh Kaushal who was posted as Special Chief Secretary-cum-Director General of the Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration. Fukushima stadium included as additional baseball venue for 2020 Tokyo Olympics :
Organizers of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics say the International Olympic Committee has approved their plan to add a stadium in Fukushima for newly added baseball and softball events.
The IOC held a second-day Executive Board meeting today in the South Korean city of Pyeongchang, the host of the 2018 Winter Games. Tokyo organizing committee proposed Azuma Stadium in Fukushima Prefecture as an additional venue for baseball and softball. Organizers said, they hope to hold some of the games in Fukushima as well, as a way to support the prefecture's efforts to recover from the 2011 disasters.
