Andhra Pradesh to receive special assistance package from Central govt :

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a special assistance package for Andhra Pradesh by way of funding the state's externally-aided projects and the irrigation component of Polavaram project. This support for capital expenditure would help the newly separated state of Andhra Pradesh to put its finances on a firmer footing and promote economic growth, an official statement read.

Bengaluru City railway station becomes blind-friendly :

Braille maps and platform indicators were unveiled at the Bengaluru City railway station on Tuesday, making it the second blind-friendly station after Mysuru railway station in India. Two Braille scripted maps with directions to platforms, ticket counters, and restrooms were inaugurated. Further, 600 Braille platform indicators were placed along the railings of the old Foot Over Bridge and subway.
Hyderabad tops among Indian city on Survey of highest quality of living :

Hyderabad has been ranked as the city with the highest quality of living among Indian cities, as per Mercer 2017 Quality of Living Index. However, Hyderabad has slipped down five spots in the global rankings. Further, New Delhi continued to be ranked the lowest among the Indian cities on the list for the second straight year.
Inter-State River Water Disputes (Amendment) Bill introduced by Centre in Lok Sabha:
The government on Tuesday introduced a bill in the Lok Sabha for the setting up of a single standing tribunal to resolve water-related disputes between states. Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti introduced the Inter-State River Water Disputes (Amendment) Bill, 2017 and called it a "revolutionary step". Currently, there are multiple tribunals which sometimes delay the dispute resolution.
Mallikarjun Kharge  of Congress set to become next PAC Chairman :
Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge is set to become the next chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). Kharge will succeed his party colleague KV Thomas, who will complete his third term as PAC Chairman on April 30. According to reports, the Congress on Tuesday wrote to the Lok Sabha Speaker recommending Kharge's name for the post.
Movie ticket price of Karnataka limited at Rs.200 in all theatres :

The Karnataka government has cap the price of movie tickets at all cinema theatres, including multiplexes, in the state at Rs.200. The state government also made the screening of Kannada and regional language films in one screen mandatory between 1:30 PM and 7:30 PM at all the state's multiplex cinemas. This is reportedly aimed at developing Karnataka's film industry.

Cabinet approves 2% Dearness Allowance hike for govt staff :

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a 2% hike in Dearness Allowance and Dearness Relief, which was due from January 2017. Dearness Allowance and Dearness Relief are provided to central government employees and pensioners to neutralise the impact of inflation on their earnings. This will have an impact of around Rs.6,833 crore on the exchequer in the financial year 2017-18.
Research centre to be opened in Bengaluru by Grab rival of Uber :

Ride-hailing startup Uber's main rival in Southeast Asia, Grab has announced plans to open a research and development centre in Bengaluru. The startup is looking to hire around 200 engineers in India to focus on developing its payments service GrabPay. However, Grab's Engineering VP Arul Kumaravel said the company has no plans of expanding its on-demand cab services to India.
National Theatre Festival starts today in Kerala :

National Theatre Festival will begin today in the capital city of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram. The Festival is organised by the Information and Public Relations Department and will be held from March 16 to 24.
Popular theatre groups from across the country will perform in the festival. There will be a total of 17 plays, from various states, including six from Kerala. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the NTF 2017 today.

J&K: Students appearing in Class 10 exam to be provisionally admitted to 11th :

In Jammu and Kashmir, students appearing in Class 10 examinations will be provisionally admitted to 11th immediately after conclusion of the board examinations. This is as per the new guidelines issued by the State School Education Department. The Department has restructured the existing examination system and the new one will help to increase class work days and save academic year of the students.
As per an order, the students, who are declared unsuccessful in the results, shall be permitted to continue their studies in Class 11th till the results of the bi-annual examination are declared.

Setting of 50 new Kendriya Vidyalayas got approval from CCEA :  

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on 15 March 2017 approved the proposal for setting up around 50 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) under Civil or Defence Sector in the country. The total project cost for the proposed 50 new Kendriya Vidyalayas is Rs 1160 crore based on Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) norms.
Tamil Nadu budget for 2017-18  presented today :
D Jayakumar, the Finance Minister of Tamil Nadu, on 16 March 2017 presented the 2017-18 state budget of Tamil Nadu in the assembly. This was his maiden budget presentation. This was also the first budget to be presented by the state government headed by Chief Minister E Palaniswami. In light of the awaited GST implementation, the state has not introduced any new taxes in the budget. The finance minister said that introduction of GST will benefit the state.

MoU between LBSNAA and NIPAM for capacity building of public officials got approval from Union Cabinet :

The Union Cabinet approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie and Namibia Institute of Public Administration and Management (NIPAM), Namibia.
The MoU will be signed in the field of capacity building of public offcials of Namibia and other training activities for the benefit of both the institutes. The MOU will help the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy to disseminate some of its experience in running a training institution for higher civil services in the country to NIPAM. It will also help the two sides to engage in collaborative activities in the sphere of public administration and capacity building.
20 projects worth Rs 1900 crore got approved for implementation of Namami Gange Programme in various states :

The Executive Committee (EC) of National Mission for Clean Ganga approved 20 projects worth nearly Rs 1900 crore. Out of 20 projects, 13 are in Uttarakhand that includes creating new sewage treatment plants, upgrading existing STPs and laying of sewage networks in Haridwar at an estimated cost of around Rs 415 crore.
The approved plan for Haridwar is aimed at treating sewage water generated by not only city’s 1.5 lakh local dwellers, but also by people who visit the place for various purposes. All the projects will be completely funded by the Union Government, including the expenditure on operation and maintenance of these projects.
Nirmala Sitharaman launches Trade Infrastructure for Export Scheme to address needs of exporters :
Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today launched the Trade Infrastructure for Export Scheme (TIES). Speaking at a function in New Delhi, Mrs Sitharaman said the scheme is focused on addressing the needs of the exporters.
She said, the focus is not just to create infrastructure but to make sure it is professionally run and sustained. She also said, that there will be an empowered committee to periodically review the progress of the approved projects in the Scheme and will take necessary steps to ensure achievement of the objectives of the Scheme.

Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Minister Uma Bharti today launched cleanliness fortnight in her Ministry by administering Swachh Bharat pledge to the officials and employees of her Ministry in New Delhi.
Speaking on the occasion the Minister referred to the Clean Indian Mission of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said every citizen has to be aware about the need for cleanliness. She said, the countries in the world which are considered very clean, government find that every citizen there is very conscious about cleanliness.

Changi Airport of Singapore rated world's best for fifth year :

The Changi Airport in Singapore has been rated the world's best airport for the fifth consecutive year in a survey by research firm Skytrax. The Haneda Airport in Tokyo, Incheon Airport in South Korea, Munich Airport in Germany and Hong Kong Airport complete the top five. The airports in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad are listed among the top 100.

Population census calculation launched in Pakistan :
Pakistan has launched a countrywide census, the first in nearly two decades. The census, started yesterday with the assistance of over 2 lakh troops, is being conducted in two phases. At least one soldier will accompany each civilian enumerator going from house to house to enlist the number of households and individuals living there.
The census will be completed on 25th of May. The final outcome would be known by July and it may lead to demarcation of constituencies ahead of the General elections next year.

J&K Bank to raise Rs. 250 cr via preferential issue to J&K govt :

Jammu & Kashmir Bank on Thursday said a meeting of its board of directors is scheduled to be held on March 20 to consider and approve the allotment of equity shares to the J&K state government on a preferential basis, aggregating to an amount of about Rs. 250 crore.
The issue of 3,65,55,051 equity shares of Re 1 each fully paid-up to the J&K government will be at the issue price of Rs. 68.39 per equity share (including a premium of Rs. 67.39 per equity share), the bank said in a stock exchange notification.

3-minutes digital loan against securities service launched by HDFC bank :
HDFC Bank on Wednesday launched digital Loan against Securities (LAS) allowing customers to avail loans in less than 3 minutes.  The service will also be available to customers with no credit history. The bank, which will offer 10.5 per cent interest rate on the product, will soon expand the offering to other securities such as mutual funds, bonds and insurance policies.
Customers can avail a minimum loan of Rs 1 lakh and maximum loan up to Rs 20 lakh under this facility. Banks normally disburse 50 per cent of the value of pledged shares as loan. The bank has collaborated with NSDL to seamlessly deliver this product.

Benchmark interest rate increased on 0.25% by US Federal Reserve :

US Federal Reserve has raised its benchmark interest rate by 0.25 per cent for only the third time in a decade. The central bank voted to raise its key rate target to a range of 0.75 per cent to 1 per cent.
The Fed had been expected to raise rates after a robust February jobs report, solid pay gains, rising inflation and a dip in the unemployment rate to 4.7 per cent. Fed Chair Janet Yellen said, the committee judged that a modest increase in the rate is appropriate in light of the economy's solid progress.
Sale of 24% equity in Lubrizol India by Indian Oil to Lubrizol Corporation, USA approved
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) gave its approval to permit Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IndianOil) to sell its 24 per cent equity in M/s Lubrizol India Private Limited (LIPL) to Lubrizol Corporation, USA (LC).
The approval was given at a meeting of the CCEA chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 15 March 2017 in New Delhi. The sale will enable the IndianOil to have a long term association with the Lubrizol Corporation.

SpaceX launches communications satellite in second attempt :
After postponing its first attempt to launch communications satellite EchoStar XXIII due to high winds on Tuesday, Elon Musk-led space startup SpaceX today successfully deployed the satellite through its Faclon 9 rocket. The satellite was deployed into an orbit more than 35,000 kilometres above the Earth’s surface to provide broadcast services for Brazil.
SpaceX wins Rs.630 crore launch contract from US Air Force :
Elon Musk-led aerospace startup SpaceX has won a Rs.630 crore contract from the US Air Force to launch its third GPS III satellite in 2019. This is SpaceX's second military contract, but the first time it competed with United Launch Alliance (ULA) for contract. ULA is a joint venture of Lockheed Martin Space Systems and Boeing Defense, Space & Security.

China, Saudi Arabia consider deals worth about $65 billion :
China and Saudi Arabia today signed memorandums of understanding and letters of intent potentially worth about 65 billion dollars during Saudi King Salman's visit to Beijing. China's Deputy Foreign Minister Zhang Ming said, the agreements involved investment, energy, space and other areas.
The Saudi King, who has overseen the launch of an ambitious economic reform plan since his accession two years ago, is on a month-long Asian tour. Saudi Arabia has sought to boost oil sales to China, the world's second-largest oil market, after losing market share to Russia last year, by working mostly with China's top three state oil firms.

MoU signed between FTII and Canon to promote short courses in Film & Television :
The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune and Canon India Private Limited on 15 March 2017 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote film education through short-term courses across several towns and cities in the country. The courses are proposed to be held in non-metros such as Guwahati, Jaipur, Vishakhapatnam, Raipur, Chandigarh, Raipur, Bhopal, Leh and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Basically, Canon partnered FTII for its Skilling India in Film and Television (SKIFT), an initiative
designed to spread the art of cinematography and film making across the country.

The 14-time national champion said she is looking forward to play her role in the development of sports in the country. Two-time Olympian Jwala won the bronze medal at the 2011 World Championships.

The Times Higher Education's Asia University Rankings 2017 released on Wednesday listed Bengaluru's Indian Institute of Science at 27, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay at 42, and Chennai's Veltech University at 43. With 33 universities in top-300 (up from 16 last year), India more than doubled its representation, becoming the third most-represented nation on the chart for the first time.

Ranchi's JSCA Stadium becomes India's 26th Test venue :
Ranchi's JSCA Stadium has become India's 26th Test venue, hosting the third Test between India and Australia which began today. The stadium, the world's 113th Test centre, hosted its first international match in January 2013, an India-England ODI. Since then, it has hosted four more international games including a T20I, with India winning three matches at the venue.
