World Consumer Rights Day - 15th March

World Consumer Rights Day is being observed today which is an awareness day and theme for this year is 'Building a Digital World Consumers can Trust’. Several functions are being organised across the country to mark the occasion. Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan will also preside over a function in New Delhi.
The day is an opportunity to promote basic rights of all consumers, demanding that those rights are respected and protected. It also gives people a chance to protest against the market abuses and social injustices.
Rs. 100 cr alloted by Karnataka govt to open Namma Canteens :
The Karnataka government today allocated 100 crore for setting up of Namma Canteens across the state to provide breakfast for 5 and lunch, dinner for 10 each. Around 200 Namma Canteens will be set up in Bengaluru alone. Further, the State lifted VAT on liquor, announced free eggs for Anganwadi workers and free LPG service for 5 lakh poor families.

Karnataka govt seeks to legalise manual scavenging :
The Karnataka government has proposed to 'legalise' manual scavenging, which was banned by the Centre following a Supreme Court order. Karnataka Social Welfare Minister H Anjaneya said the proposal was for emergency situations if men are required to enter manholes when there is no choice. Anjaneya said manual scavenging was okay if police, fire department, and an ambulance were present.

Phones, sarees offered for sterilisation by Jhalawar district admin of Rajasthan :
Jhalawar district administration in Rajasthan has launched an initiative offering 4G Android smartphones to men and sarees to women who opt for sterilisation. Speaking about the initiative's success, an official said, "[W]e have given smartphones to 15 men and sarees to 100 women who came forward for sterilisation." Notably, Jhalawar is Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje's home district.

Govt launched Bharat Net project in mission mode to connect all Gram panchayats :
Government today said, the Bharat Net project has been launched in mission mode to connect all Gram panchayats to provide high speed internet services in the country. Replying to supplementaries in the Lok Sabha, Minister of Communications Manoj Sinha said, the project is being implemented with the objective to create network infrastructure for providing Broadband connectivity of 100 mbs per second to nearly two lakh fifty thousand Gram Panchayats in the country.
Five pilgrimage places in Maharashtra got approval for Development by State govt :
A high-powered committee headed by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis yesterday approved development plans of five pilgrimage destinations in the state.
A statement from the Chief Minister's office stated that Development Plans for Shri Sant Gulabrao Maharaj's birth place at Loni- Shri Kshetra Riddhapur, Shri Sant Gulabrao Maharaj Bhaktidham, Shirasgaon Band all three in Amaravati district and Shri Sant Sakharam Maharaj at Risod in Washim district and Shri Kshetra Jyotiba in Kolhapur were approved.

Andhra Pradesh Budget for 2017-18 to be presented today :
Andhra Pradesh Finance Minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu will present the Budget for 2017-18 today with a total outlay of Rs 1.50 lakh crore at 10.25 am at the interim Assembly building in Velagapudi in Amaravati.
It is expected that the government will announce Rs 1,000 as stipend to unemployed youth, besides schemes especially for women. The government has made plans to introduce the budget with an outlay more than that of the last year.

Krishi Unnati Mela 2017 starts today in New Delhi :
The Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Radha Mohan Singh on 15 March 2017 inaugurated the Krishi Unnati Mela 2017 in New Delhi. The mela is jointly organised by the Indian Council of Agriculutral Research (ICAR) and the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare.
For the Krishi Unnati Mela 2017, thousand invitations are being sent to ICAR Institutes, SAUs, KVKs, ATARIs, Public Sector Undertakings, NGOs, private organisations and farmers. During the mela, technical sessions on various themes are planned to educate farmers on various agricultural technologies and government schemes for agricultural development. Besides, a women empowerment workshop will be organised to sensitise farm women on latest agricultural technologies and their rights.
Footwear Design and Development Institute Bill, 2017 introduced in Lok Sabha :
The Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on 14 March 2017 introduced the Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) Bill, 2017 in the Lok Sabha. The Bill is aimed at declaring the FDDI as an Institution of National Importance (INI).
It proposes that FDDI shall be established as a body corporate. The existing institute is centrally funded for meeting its capital expenditure. It aims to facilitate and promote teaching, training and research in all disciplines relating to design and development of Footwear and leather products. It will enable FDDI to emerge as Centre of Excellence meeting international standards. The institute shall consist of a Governing Council having a Chairperson who shall be an eminent academician, scientist or industrialist from the leather sector.

1st Girls Council launched by Saudi Arabia with all-male event :
Saudi Arabia launched its first-ever Girls Council in an event on Saturday that appeared to have been attended only by men. A photograph shows only men on stage and does not include Princess Abir bint Salman, who chairs the council. The women and girls were reportedly allowed to watch the meeting from a separate room via video feed.

Meeting held by 23 Asian countries in Pakistan to contemplate union like EU :
Representatives of 23 Asian countries are meeting in Islamabad, Pakistan to talk about creating a regional block similar to the European Union, Pakistan officials said. The chairman of Pakistan's Upper House of the Parliament, Raza Rabbani, urged the participants to take steps to ensure that the destiny of Asia must not be directed by the "capitalist" West.

Indian-American Seema Verma to become head of US healthcare got approvalfrom US Senate :
The US Senate on Monday confirmed President Donald Trump's pick, Indian-American Seema Verma, to run the government's centres for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Verma, who has been described by the White House as "unquestionably qualified", was confirmed by the Senate by a vote of 55-43. Notably, she has helped redesign Medicaid programs in several US states.

Missile-capable drones to be deployed by US in South Korea :
The US has declared that it will permanently station missile-capable 'Grey Eagle' drones in South Korea following North Korea's test of four ballistic missiles which were positioned to strike US bases in Japan. The US military said the deployment would add surveillance capability for US and South Korean forces. The US also started deploying THAAD anti-missile system in South Korea.

EU court allows employers to ban workers from wearing religious symbols :
The European Court of Justice (ECJ) in Luxembourg, the highest court in the European Union recently passed a ruling, allowing companies to ban staff from wearing visible religious symbols including Islamic headscarves at work.
The court, however, added that if a company does not have a policy barring their staff from sporting the religious symbols then customers cannot demand workers to remove their headscarves. This ruling was issued as a joint judgment in the cases of two women from France and Belgium, who were dismissed from their workplace for refusing to remove their headscarves.

SBI declares Rs 6,000-cr tractor one-time farm loan settlement scheme :
State Bank of India has announced a one-time farm loan settlement scheme worth 6,000 crore rupees primarily for tractors. SBI in a tweet said, One Time Settlement is announced for Agriculture Loans and the Scheme is valid until 31st of this month. Nation's largest lender urged farmers to contact their branch for details & benefits.
Managing Director of the bank Rajnish Kumar said the loans disbursed before 2011 and falling under doubtful or loss category accounts as of September 2016, will be considered under the scheme.

IDFC buys Natixis’s stake in mutual fund unit for Rs 244 crore :
Financial services major IDFC has decided to buy Natixis Global Asset Management’s 25 per cent stake in IDFC Mutual Fund for over Rs 244 crore. The shares will be purchased through IDFC Financial Holding Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of IDFC.
“The transaction is in line with the terms of the shareholders agreement that we signed with Natixis six years ago,” IDFC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Vikram Limaye told PTI. IDFC Financial Holding Company holds 75 per cent stake of IDFC Asset Management Company (AMC) and IDFC AMC Trustee Company. The remaining 25 per cent stake is held by Natixis.

Retail inflation touched 3.65% that of 4-month highest :
Retail inflation rose to 4-month high of 3(point)65 per cent in February this year, mainly due to an increase in the prices of food items. Inflation measured in terms of the Consumer Price Index had stood at 3.17 per cent in January this year. Retail inflation was 5.26 per cent in February last year.
According to data released by the Central Statistics Office, retail inflation in food items rose to 2.01 per cent in February, from 0.61 per cent in January. But prices of vegetables declined by 8.29 percent and of pulses by 9.02 per cent.
MoU signed between Tata Motors, Volkswagen Group  for exploring joint development projects :
Tata Motors announced the signing of a MoU for a long-term partnership with Volkswagen Group and Skoda to explore strategic alliance opportunities for joint development of products. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Guenter Butschek, CEO & MD of Tata Motors, Matthias Mueller, CEO of Volkswagen AG and Bernhard Maier, CEO of Skoda Auto.
The MoU lays down the scope and objectives in order to reach agreement on the modalities and terms of a long-term cooperation in identi󰻊ed areas of partnership. As part of the MoU, the Skoda Auto will take the lead on behalf of the Volkswagen Group to drive forward work towards development of vehicle concepts in the economy segment.

Life-detecting tools of Mars rover got tested by NASA in a desert region :
NASA is testing whether its Mars 2020 rover can drill for samples and look for signs of life at the same time. A test rover was used in one of the driest places on Earth, Atacama desert, South America. The desert has conditions similar to the red planet being exposed to UV radiation, having microbial life inside rocks and underground.

N Biren Singh sworn in as new CM of Manipur :
Manipur got its first BJP-led government as N Biren Singh today took oath as the Chief Minister of the state in Imphal. This comes after Governor Najma Heptulla invited the BJP to form a government. The BJP emerged as the second largest party in the 60-member Assembly, securing 21 seats, after elections results were declared on March 11.

BJP MLA Sidharth Kuncalienker has been appointed as the Protem Speaker for floor test in Goa Assembly, which is scheduled for Thursday. The Congress had accused Goa Governor Mridula Sinha of flouting the norms by giving the BJP the first chance to stake claim over the state government. Notably, the Congress was the single largest party in Goa Assembly polls.

Shashank Manohar resigns as Chairman of ICC :
ICC Chairman Shashank Manohar has resigned from his post with immediate effect. In his resignation sent to ICC CEO Dave Richardson, Manohar said it was not possible for him to hold the office due to personal reasons. Former President of the BCCI, Manohar became ICC's first independent chairman in May 2016 for a two-year term, succeeding N Srinivasan.

Wellcome Book Prize 2017 : Two Indian-American authors shortlisted
Two Indian-American authors have been shortlisted for the 30,000 pound Wellcome Book Prize. The award celebrates fiction and non-fiction works engaged with the topics of health and medicine.
Siddhartha Mukherjee is on the list of the annual prize for his study of genetics and mental health in his book 'The Gene'. He is joined by fellow Indian-American author Paul Kalanithi, who could become the first posthumous winner of the prize for his life-affirming reflection on facing mortality 'When Breath Becomes Air'. The winner will be announced at a ceremony at Wellcome Collection on the 24th of next month.

Cricketer Irfan got suspension from PCB for involvement in spot-fixing :
The Pakistan Cricket Board has provisionally suspended Mohammad Irfan from all forms of cricket following investigations into the spot-fixing allegations. Irfan had appeared before an anti-corruption unit to answer allegations of him not reporting the incident in which a bookie made a contact with him during the Pakistan Super League. PCB has given Irfan 14 days to submit his response.
Hockey India hired 4 Scientific advisors to work with team's fitness aspects :
Hockey India has roped in four scientific advisors from abroad to work with the fitness aspects of the senior and junior national teams. While Australia's Scott Conway has taken charge as the new scientific advisor of the senior men's team at the national camp that started in SAI Bengaluru today, South African Robin Anthony Webster Arkell will take over as the scientific advisor for the junior men's team.
Wayne Patrick Lombard, also a South African, will join the senior women's camp in Bhopal as scientific advisor. Australian Daniel Barry, meanwhile, has been roped in as scientific advisor for the junior women's team.
Cyclist Joanna Rowsell Shand and Double Olympic champion retires :
Double Olympic gold medallist Joanna Rowsell Shand on 14 March 2017 announced her retirement from international cycling. Shand had won the women's team pursuit at four editions of the World Championships (2008, 2009, 2012 and 2014). She grabbed the gold medal in the same discipline at the Olympic Games in London and Rio in 2012 and 2016. The cyclist also won the individual pursuit at the 2014 World Championship.
