Vocabulary Tricks Part 28: The Role of Newspapers

Newspapers help us to remain well informed about current happenings all over the world. Newspapers contain current news, articles and advertisements. They prevent social exploitation in the society.
People read newspapers with curiosity early morning. Youngsters scan current events and job advertisement pages. Some people peer over the lottery results. Others have an interest in the zodiac.
Newspapers aware the people about politicians with vested interest who deceive the people. They are a prerequisite to safeguard rights of people. Newspapers solicit a public response and suggest a solution. Corruption is rampant in all departments. People are made aware about the malpractice. They can exhort people to root out social evils from society.

Words With Meaning And Additional Examples

Exploitation

Meaning: The action or fact of treating someone unfairly in order to benefit from their work.
Example: The exploitation of migrant workers should be kerbed.
Synonyms: taking advantage, abuse of, misuse, unfair treatment

Curiosity

Meaning: A strong desire to know or learn something.
Example: Filled with curiosity, she peered through the window.
Synonyms: inquisitiveness, interest, spirit of enquiry

Scan

Meaning: Look quickly but not very thoroughly through (a document or other text) in order to identify relevant information.
Example: I scanned through the reference materials.
Synonyms: glance through, look over, have a look at, cast one's eye over

Peer

Meaning: Look with difficulty or concentration at someone or something.
Example: He peered into the fog but nothing appeared to be there.
Synonyms: squint, look closely, look earnestly, try to see

Zodiac

Meaning: Twelve equal divisions or signs (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces).
Example: The apparent paths of the sun, the moon, and the major planets all fall within the zodiac.

Vested interest

Meaning: Personal interest with an expectation of gains.
Example: Banks have a vested interest in the growth of their customers.

Deceive

Meaning: Cause someone to believe something that is not true, especially for personal gain.
Example: He plans to deceive people.
Synonyms: swindle, defraud, cheat, trick, hoodwink, hoax

Prerequisite

Meaning: A thing that is required as a prior condition for something else to happen or exist.
Example: Sponsorship is not a prerequisite for any of our courses.
Synonyms: necessary condition, precondition, condition, essential

Solicit

Meaning: Ask for or try to obtain (something) from someone.
Example: He called a meeting to solicit their views.
Synonyms: ask for, request, apply for, put in for, seek

Rampant

Meaning: Flourishing or spreading unchecked.
Example: Political violence was rampant.
Synonyms: uncontrolled, unrestrained, unchecked, unbridled

Malpractice

Meaning: Improper, illegal, or negligent professional behaviour.
Example: Victims of medical malpractice.
Synonyms: wrongdoing, dereliction of duty, professional misconduct, breach of ethics

Exhort

Meaning: Strongly encourage or urge (someone) to do something.
Example: She exhorted her to be a good child.
Synonyms: call on, enjoin, adjure, charge, try to persuade
