6th February - International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation
Theme : Building a solid and interactive bridge between Africa and the world to accelerate ending FGM by 2030.
International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation is a UN-sponsored awareness day that takes place February 6 each year since 2003. February 6th has been dedicated to the intolerance of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Female genital mutilation (FGM) comprises all procedures that involve altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons and is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women.
It reflects deep-rooted inequality between the sexes, and constitutes an extreme form of discrimination against women and girls. The practice also violates their rights to health, security and physical integrity, their right to be free from torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, and their right to life when the procedure results in death.
Ministry of Railways planning to install first train route on Andaman and Nicobar Islands
The Railways Ministry is planning a 240-kilometre railway line connecting Port Blair with Diglipur on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The line, set to cost over ₹2,413 crore and be the first on the archipelago, has tourism potential and "strategic value" for defence forces. The Railways and Union Territory administration will share its operational profits or loss.

Dalhousie Road in Central Delhi got renamed as Dara Shikoh Road :
The New Delhi Municipal Council on Monday renamed Central Delhi's 'Dalhousie Road' after Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's elder brother Dara Shikoh. "Dara Shikoh...promoted the peace and concord between the followers of Hinduism and Islam," BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi said in her proposal. The road had been named after Lord Dalhousie, who served as British India's Governor General from 1848-56.
ONGC replaces 'Rajiv Gandhi' name with 'Pandit Deendayal' for its building :
State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) has removed the name of ex-PM Rajiv Gandhi from its newly built corporate office in Delhi and has changed it to Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Urja Bhawan. The name Rajiv Gandhi Urja Bhawan was given to it by the then PM Manmohan Singh in 2007. The decision was taken to honour Upadhyaya, said ONGC.

Cash transaction above ₹3 lakh will get 100% Penalty :
A penalty of equal amount will be levied for any cash transaction of over ₹3 lakh from April 1, Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia has said. "Supposing you do a transaction of ₹4 lakh in cash, then the penalty would be ₹4 lakh," Adhia explained. A ban on cash transaction of over ₹3 lakh has been proposed in the Union Budget.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam today tendered his resignation from the post citing 'personal reasons' and setting the stage for takeover of V K Sasikala, who was elected as Legislature Party leader in the day.
In a letter addressed to Governor Vidyasagar Rao, Mr Panneerselvam urged him to kindly accept his resignation and relieve the Council of Ministers appointed by him on 6th of December last year.

Union Human Resource Development Ministry will set up a department - National Testing Agency (NTA) to conduct examinations for higher and secondary education. The decision has been taken keeping in view that the Central Board of Secondary Education has been conducting examinations in which around one million students appear every month which is a very large number. This was stated by Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar in New Delhi yesterday.

Indian Coast Guard and their UAE counter parts will take part in Joint exercise and sharing of operational expertise from today. Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Samudra Pavak has arrived on a good will visit to Dubai and has anchored itself at Port Rashid. The Indian Ambassador to UAE, Navdeep Suri visited the ship yesterday and was briefed on board by DIG Satish Kumar, captain of the ship. Samudra Pavak, the third of the Pollution Control Vessel series of the Indian Coast Guard, was indigenously designed and commissioned in January 2016.
PCRA Cyclothon to be organised by PCRA to adopt fuel-free Transportation :
Petroleum Ministry today organized the Cyclothon at India Gate in New Delhi. The main aim of 3.4 Km cyclothon was to use less-fuel vehicle for transport and protect the environment. The Cyclothon was organized by the Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA) to create awareness among masses to adopt environment friendly transport system. The Cyclothon completely agrees with PCRA tagline “Conserve Fuel and Save Future”.

Information and Broadcasting Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu will release the annual year book 'India-2017' and 'Bharat-2017' at a function in New Delhi today. Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Col. Rajyavardhan Rathore will also be present on the occasion.
These books give comprehensive information about the country and various States and Union Territories including functioning of the Government and the economy.

Nagaland cabinet to submit memorandum on exempt it Part IX A of Constitution to PM :
Nagaland cabinet has decided to submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister to issue an ordinance to exempt the state from the provision of Part IX A of the Constitution which deals with the municipalities. According to a communiqué issued by the media cell of Chief Minister's Office, the decision was taken in an emergency meeting of the state Cabinet, was attended by special invitees comprising legislators from all tribes yesterday.
The decision comes in the wake of various tribal organisations opposing elections to Urban Local Bodies (ULB) with 33 per cent reservation of seats for women and demanding the resignation of Chief Minister T R Zeliang and his cabinet.

17th BIMSTEC senior officials’ meeting to be held at Kathmandu tomorrow :
The 17th session of BIMSTEC senior officials’ meeting will be held at Kathmandu tomorrow. The delegates of member countries will review the progress made by Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) and recommend future course of action to strengthen regional cooperation among the group.

CMSGUY scheme on village development launched by Assam CM at Guwahati :
In a move to bring about paradigm shift towards holistic development of villages, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal launched the Chief Minister Samagra Gramya Unnayan Yojana, CMSGUY in Guwahati this evening. This scheme is a mega mission with a financial outlay of 30,000 crore rupees and it will be implemented in all the villages of the state. It will culminate in 2021-22.

Sport persons of Jharkhand to get 2% reservation in govt jobs:
Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das today said the state will give two per cent reservation to sports persons in government jobs and nutritious food to them. He said efforts were also being taken to give nutritious food to the sports persons, an official release said in Ranchi.

World's longest non-stop commercial flight journey completed in New Zealand :
The world's longest non-stop commercial flight landed in Auckland, New Zealand, today after a 14,535-kilometre journey lasting 16 hours, 23 minutes. The Qatar Airways flight departed from Doha and crossed ten time zones. Although an Air India flight claims to be world's longest by flying distance, Qatar Airways' flight is the longest by land distance (distance between Auckland and Doha).

Ban on American wrestling team lifted by Iran :
Iran has lifted a ban on U.S. wrestlers,allowing them to take part in the Freestyle World Cup later this month in the Iranian city of Kermanshah. Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi said the ban was lifted after the discriminative restrictions on Iranian nationals travelling to the U.S. was suspended by a U.S. federal judge.
Iran initially refused to issue the visas, in retaliation for US President Donald Trump's immigration order. Iran and the United States severed their diplomatic ties after the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran. But wrestling teams from the two countries have continued exchanges.

Indian Ship 'Samudra Pavak' is on 4-day good will visit to Dubai
The indigenously designed ship Samudra Pavak or the ‘Purifier of the Seas’, the third of the Pollution Control Vessel (PCV) series of the Indian Coast Guard, is on a four day good will mission to UAE. Commanded by Deputy Inspector General Satish Kumar , it has 15 officers and 99 other personnel and is scheduled for a joint exercise and sharing of operational expertise with their UAE counterparts.
Close on the heels of the visit of the Crown Prince to India , the visit is considered yet another step in maritime cooperation with the Gulf country .

Assocham recommends RBI to reduce interest rate by 75 bps:
Industry body Assocham has said that Reserve Bank of India should cut interest rate by 0(point)5-0(point)75 per cent in view of dismal credit growth as well as subdued demand.
As the RBI Monetary Policy Committee meets on February 7-8 for next bi-monthly credit policy, Assocham has impressed upon the central bank and the Finance Ministry to ensure adequate transmission of cuts in the interest rates.

IndiGo's security training centre licence suspended by BCAS :
Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, BCAS has suspended the licence of budget carrier IndiGo's aviation security training facility. The regulatory authority took the decision after several lapses were detected in the examination procedure that it was following.
PTI quoting sources said, the orders issued by the apex aviation security agency BCAS on Friday bar the Gurgaon-based airline from conducting security training programme for its employees any further.

SoftBank Group's Chief Operating Officer (COO) Jonathan Bullock has resigned from the boards of Ola and Snapdeal due to "personal reasons and other obligations". He also resigned from the board of Housing, citing a regulatory filing. SoftBank's Managing Director David Thevenon is likely to replace Bullock and join the boards of Ola and Snapdeal.

India Squash team wins gold at Asian Junior Squash Championships
Top seeds India defeated Malaysia to win the gold medal in the boys' team event at the Asian Junior Squash Championships in Hong Kong on Sunday. This is the second time India's boys' team has won the title, with the earlier win coming in 2011. Meanwhile, India's girls' team finished joint second, behind Malaysia and Korea who shared the title.
FIBA Women's Asia Cup basketball tournament to be hosted by India :
India will host FIBA Women's Asia Cup basketball tournament at Bengaluru in July. Basketball Federation of India (BFI) President K Govindaraj said the continental flagship tournament for women will be hled from July 23 to 29.
India has also been given another continental level tournament-the FIBA U-16 Women's Asian Championship - which will be held from October 22 to 28 in Hyderabad. This will be the first time since 2009 that India will host a major FIBA (International Basketball Federation) event.
Alastair Cook steps down as England's Test team captain
Alastair Cook has resigned as England's Test captain after a record 59 matches in charge. The 32-year-old took the role in 2012 and led England to Ashes victories in 2013 and 2015. "Stepping down has been an incredibly hard decision but I know this is the correct decision for me and at the right time for the team," said Cook.
