Theme : Science and Technology for specially abled persons
National Science Day is celebrated all over India with great enthusiasm on 28th of February every year in order to commemorate the invention of the Raman Effect in India by the Indian physicist, Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman on the same day in the year 1928. For his great success in the field of science in India, Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman was awarded and honored with the Nobel Prize in the Physics in the year 1930.
The theme of the year 2017 is “Science and Technology for specially abled persons”.
Iconic red buses of Mumbai to be painted white and yellow for trial :
Two iconic red-coloured Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) buses will be painted white and yellow soon, as part of a pilot project. The decision to permanently change the colour will be taken only after considering passengers' reactions, BEST General Manager Jagdish Patil said. BEST also approved a proposal to provide passengers with free WiFi connectivity.
HPCL to be acquired by ONGC on a deal worth Rs 44,000 crore :
State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) may acquire India's third biggest fuel retailer Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) in a ₹44,000 crore ($6.6 billion) deal. ONGC, which is India's biggest oil and gas producer, may acquire the government's entire 51.11% stake in HPCL. The deal is part of the government's plan to create an integrated oil giant.

Liquor ban to be implemented in Chandigarh from April 1 :
As the Supreme Court judgement banning liquor shops along state and national highways takes effect from April 1, all liquor shops in Chandigarh might face closure. On record, all major roads in Chandigarh are listed as state highways and fall under the judgement. The categorisation was done two decades back so that the Union Territory administration could maintain the roads.
1st Integrated Heliport of India launched at Rohini in North Delhi :
The country's first integrated heliport was inaugurated today at Rohini in North Delhi. Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju dedicated the heliport to the nation. Pawan Hans Limited has developed the heliport which is spread over more than 25 acres.
Our correspondent reports that the heliport is expected to take the growth story of aviation in India to new horizons.
6-fold hike in urban reform incentive fund proposed by Government :
The Urban Development Ministry has proposed a six-fold increase in reform incentive fund to over 3,000 crore rupees annually over the next three years to push implementation of various schemes in urban sector.
An official release said, for providing the incentives, the cities will be ranked based on performance under five reforms such as getting credit ratings, initiatives for value capturing finances and bringing in professionalism in municipalities.
India's first Antyodaya Express launched today b/w Ernakulam and Howrah by MoR :
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has launched the country’s first Antyodaya Express between Ernakulam and Howrah. The train service was inaugurated by the Railways Minister via video conferencing in New Delhi yesterday.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Prabhu said, Antyodaya Express is a long-distance, fully unreserved, superfast train service, for the common man to be operated on dense routes. He said, the new express train will have facilities like cushioned luggage racks which can serve as seats, LED lights, modular toilets, pleasing interior colour scheme and others.

EA Secretary states from 1st of July 2017 GST to be implemented :
Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das has said, Goods and Services Tax (GST) will be implemented from 1st of July this year. Speaking during the launch of Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, OECD Economic Surveys India in New Delhi, Mr Das said, GST will be a reality soon as all states are on board. He said, GST will replace a myriad of consumption taxes and will be a game changer over the medium term as it will reduce tax cascading and boost India’s competitiveness, investment and job creation.

India's Foreign Secretary Jaishankar to visit US today :
Foreign Secretary Jaishankar will travel to the United States today to hold a wide-ranging of bilateral talks with senior members of the Donald Trump Administration.
India's concerns over possible clampdown on H1B visas and safety of its nationals are likely to be raised by Dr. Jaishankar during his talks in Washington.
According to officials sources in New Delhi, he will also be holding talks on regional and international issues of mutual interest with senior members.

UK-India Year of Culture 2017 hosted by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace :
Queen Elizabeth II today hosted a reception at the Buckingham Palace to launch the UK-India Year of Culture 2017 with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley representing the Indian government at the historic event. Jaitley was joined by an Indian delegation at the grand event this evening.
The 90-year-old Queen was joined by her husband, Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, and grandson Prince William and his wife Kate. It showcased the cultural diversity of India in the form of dance.

Inter-disciplinary standing committee been appointed to review cyber threats by RBI :
RBI has announced setting up of an inter-disciplinary standing committee on cyber security to review the threats inherent in the existing and emerging technology. In a release, the apex bank today said, the 11-member committee will study adoption of various security standards and protocols, interface with stakeholders and suggest appropriate policy interventions to strengthen cyber security and resilience. It said, the committee, headed by an RBI Executive Director, can co-opt more experts and also operate through a framework of sub-committees to examine specific issues.

GDP growth for current, upcoming two fiscals is projected as 7% by OECD :
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, OECD today put India's GDP growth at 7 percent for the current fiscal, 7(point)3 for the next and 7(point)7 percent for 2018-19. In its Economic Survey, the Global think-tank said, demonetisation may have impacted short term growth but the long term effects would include important gains going forward.
It suggested that India should bring down corporate tax rate from 30 per cent to 25 per cent. The OECD said comprehensive tax reforms, especially the Goods and Services Tax, would raise revenue of all stake holders.

Air defence missile system Israeli SPYDER prepared by India :
The Indian Air Force is preparing a security web with the Israeli SPYDER air defence missile system on the borders with Pakistan to tackle any aircraft, cruise missile or drone that tries to violate Indian airspace. SPYDER is a low-level, quick reaction missile to neutralise hostile targets up to 15 km away and at heights between 20 and 9,000 metres.
2 people trip around Moon planned by SpaceX to in 2018 :
Elon Musk-led space exploration startup SpaceX has announced it will send two paying passengers on a weeklong trip around Moon next year. The passengers will be flown to space in a Dragon 2 spaceship, launched by SpaceX's in-design Falcon Heavy rocket. The two people will begin training for space this year and will need to clear certain health tests.

Vikas Swarup appointed as new MEA Spokesperson replacing Gopal Baglay :
The Ministry of External Affairs on Monday appointed the 1992 batch Indian Foreign Service officer Gopal Baglay as the new MEA Spokesperson. Baglay has replaced Vikas Swarup, who has been appointed as the Indian High Commissioner to Canada. Prior to this appointment, Baglay served as the Joint Secretary of Pakistan, Iran, and Afghanistan division of the ministry.

Nand Kumar Sai sworn in as NCST Chairperson :
Nand Kumar Sai today took charge as National Commission for Scheduled Tribes Chairperson in Delhi. Speaking after assuming office, Mr Sai said, tribal culture is integral to diversity of India. He said, tribals need protection and opportunity and he will work towards that.
NCST investigates and monitors all matters related to safeguards provided for Scheduled Tribes under the constitution or under law or under any order of the Government. It also evaluates the working of the safeguards and proper their implementation.

ISSF World Cup: Men's 10m air pistol bronze medal bagged by Indian Shooter Jitu Rai
India's Jitu Rai won the bronze medal in the men's 10-metre air pistol event at the International Shooting Sport Federation World Cup in New Delhi on Tuesday. Earlier, Jitu had won the gold medal in the 10-metre air pistol mixed event alongside Heena Sidhu, while Ankur Mittal had won silver in men's double trap at the competition on Monday.

Tarun and Alwin won gold at 2017 Uganda International Series men's doubles :
Indian shuttlers Tarun Kona and Alwin Francis won the men's doubles gold at the 2017 Uganda International Series on Sunday. The duo, who were top-seeded, dropped a game only once in the tournament during their semi-final match. The pair, which is ranked 55 currently, teamed up in 2015 and have won three International Series events together till now.

ISSF World Cup Men's Double Trap silver medal won by Ankur Mittal :
Indian shooter Ankur Mittal won silver in the men's Double Trap event at the ISSF World Cup in New Delhi on Monday. Mittal finished the final with 74 points, only one point behind gold medal winner, Australia's James Willett. The Indian shooter had earlier won a gold (2014) and bronze (2016) at the Asian Shooting Championships.

P. Shiv Shankar Former Union Minister passes away, at age 88 :
Former Union Minister and Veteran Congress leader P. Shiv Shankar, who passed away yesterday in Hyderabad, will be cremated with official honours this morning in Hyderabad. The former Governor of Kerala and Sikkim was ailing for the past some time and breathed his last at his residence. He was 88 and survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
Born in Ranga Reddy district, Shiv Shankar was prominent leader from backward classes. He became a Minister in Indira Gandhi’s cabinet holding portfolio of law and Justice. Later he also held portfolios of external affairs, Commerce, petroleum and Human Resources Development ministries in Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi cabinets.
