World Day of Social Justice - February 20th
Theme : Preventing conflict and sustaining peace through decent work
World Day of Social Justice is a day recognizing the need to promote efforts to tackle issues such as poverty, exclusion and unemployment. Many organizations, including the UN and the International Labour Office, make statements on the importance of social justice for people. Many organizations also present plans for greater social justice by tackling poverty, social and economic exclusion and unemployment. The United Nations General Assembly has decided to observe 20 February annually, approved on 26 November 2007 and starting in 2009, as the World Day of Social Justice.
Nepal offered ₹2,280-crore loans by India for infrastructure development :
India has committed soft loans amounting to $340 million (around ₹2,280 crore) to Nepal for infrastructure projects. Through these loans, India committed itself towards a bridge project and 15 road projects in the neighbouring country. Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu, during his visit to Nepal, signed a letter of exchange with Nepalese Minister Ramesh Lekhak in this regard.

Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram celebrates Statehood Day today :
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday greeted the states of Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram on their Statehood Day. He wished the states to scale new heights of development and progress immensely in the years to come. Notably, both Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram were granted statehood in 1987. Both the states were Union Territories before being granted statehood.

Extra rake for transporting onions from Nashik to be operated by Central Railways :
Central Railway will operate another freight train, in addition to existing three, from Nashik in Maharashtra for transportation of onions to other parts of country. A senior official said in Mumbai that the orders to operate the rake from February 20 came from Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu, given the huge production of the bulb this year.
Onion farmers have yielded a bumper crop which is almost double than the previous year. The Railway Minister had received demands to run additional goods train from Nashik, following which he ordered to run one more goods train from today.
Delhi-bound Kalindi Express collides with freight train at Tundla :
The chief PRO North Central Railway Bijay Kumar told AIR that the driver and assistant driver of Kalindi Express train have been suspended for carelessness in their duties. Supervisor Loco Inspector has also been suspended on the same ground. Meanwhile, a detailed inquiry has been ordered .
In this incident, Kalindi express train engine and one luggage coach were derailed when the train outshoot the signal at Tundla under Delhi-Kanpur section and partly dashed with a goods train passing from the rail crossing.
Tamil Nadu CM announces various offers after winning the trust vote :
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswamy has announced that 500 of the state run liquor shops would be wound up with immediate effect. He took charge as the chief minister this morning after winning the trust vote last Saturday. Later, addressing the press, he said total prohibition will be implemented in a phased manner.
He has signed orders for distribution of mopeds for 1 lakh women with 50 percent subsidy with the ceiling of 20,000 rupees per beneficiary this year. The populist measure was part of the AIADMK election manifesto. He also said under the Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Benefit Scheme, expectant mothers would be doled out 18000 rupees each as against 12000 rupees now for the first two live births.

Madhya Pradesh today celebrates Khajuraho Dance Festival :
In Madhya Pradesh, the world famous Khajuraho Dance Festival begins this evening. AIR correspondent reports that eminent Indian classical dancers will perform during the seven day event.
"This Dance Festival presents colourful and brilliant Indian dances in the backdrop of the famous Khajuraho temples. Live performances of classical dances like Kathak, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Bharatnatyam, and Mohniattam will be major attraction this time. The festival will begin with presentation of Anuj Mishra, Sanchita Bhattacharya and Jayshree Acharya.

Land for 9 thematic cities alloted by Andhra govt :
Andhra Pradesh government has allocated lands for the construction of nine thematic cities in the new capital Amaravathi.
The government has announced allocation of 11,574 acres of land for the construction of Tourism thematic city in Amaravathi, 8,547 acres for Knowledge city, 6,582 for Electronic city, 6,511 for Health city, 5,168 for Finance city, 5,107 for Media city, 4,150 for Sports city, 3,438 for Judiciary and 2,702 for the construction of Administrative city.

Mohammed Alsheikh of Palestinian breaks contortion world record :
Thirteen-year-old Mohammed Alsheikh from Palestine broke the world record for the 'Most full body revolutions maintaining a chest stand in one minute'. The teenager contortionist, dubbed as 'Spider-Boy', ran around his body 38 times, thereby beating Leilani Franco's record of 29 revolutions. Alsheikh has been a competing athlete for around five years and has also participated in Arab's Got Talent.
BANKING NEWS:
RBI has increased weekly withdrawal limit of Savings account to ₹50,000 :
Beginning today, the maximum cash withdrawal limit from savings account has been increased to ₹50,000 a week from ₹24,000. The relaxation is followed by an RBI notification issued on January 30, announcing the changes in the weekly withdrawal limits effective from February 20. The limits on cash withdrawals from savings bank account will be withdrawn completely from March 13.

Purchase of jewellery for more than ₹2 lakh by cash will be charged 1% Tax :
Cash purchases of jewellery will attract 1% tax collected at source (TCS) from April 1 if the amount exceeds ₹2 lakh, as against the current threshold of ₹5 lakh. Once the Finance Bill 2017 is passed, jewellery will be treated on par with general goods. This comes amid the government's decision banning cash transactions above ₹3 lakh from April 1.

Dragon spacecraft of SpaceX successfully launched ISS :
Elon Musk-led space exploration startup SpaceX on Sunday successfully launched its Dragon spacecraft which will deliver nearly 2,500 kg of cargo to International Space Station (ISS) for NASA. Dragon spacecraft is also carrying strains of the MRSA superbug to study its behaviour in microgravity. The launch was conducted from the same pad used for NASA's first manned mission to the moon.

Shurhozelie Liezietsu becomes the new CM of Nagaland :
Amid the political uncertainty in Nagaland, National People's Front President Shurhozelie Liezietsu was on Monday elected as the next Chief Minister by the party's MLAs. The ruling Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) had also submitted a letter of support to Liezietsu. Notably, this comes after the current CM TR Zeliang tendered his resignation on Sunday.

Tymal Mills becomes the highest bided bowler in IPL history for ₹12 cr :
England's Tymal Mills became the most expensive bowler in IPL history after the Royal Challengers Bangalore bought the 24-year-old for ₹12 crore during this year's auction on Monday. Mills, whose base price was ₹50 lakh, is also the fourth-most expensive player in the tournament's history behind Yuvraj Singh (₹16 crore), Ben Stokes (₹14.5 crore) and MS Dhoni (₹12.5 crore).
IPL 2017 Auction : Ben Stokes the highest bided player of the edition for ₹14.5cr :
England all-rounder Ben Stokes became the most expensive overseas player in the IPL history after the Rising Pune Supergiants bought the player for ₹14.5 crore during this year's IPL auction on Monday. Stokes also became the second-most expensive buy in the tournament history, after Yuvraj Singh's ₹16-crore price tag, set by the Delhi Daredevils in 2015.
Announces made by Afridi on his retirement from international cricket :
Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi has announced his retirement from international cricket. Afridi's 21 year illustrious career was sometimes checkered with controversies.
The 36-year-old star had already quit Test and ODI cricket but still captained the Pakistan Twenty 20 team at the 2016 world championships in India. He stepped down as captain after the tournament but retained hopes of continuing his career in the sport's shortest format as a player.
Rotterdam tennis title won by Tsonga :
Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has claimed the Rotterdam tennis title. In the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament final in Rotterdam, sixth seeded Tsonga defeated third seeded David Goffin of Belgium 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
It is the first title for 31-year old Tsonga since 2015. Tsonga served well, banged down 10 aces as his power game eventually overwhelmed Goffin whose consolation is that he will be in the world's top 10 today.
