Directions (1-5): Quadratic Equations
1).6x + 9y = 23; 4x + 7y = 42; x + z = 42
a) x < y = z
b) x < y < z
c) x > y > z
d) x ≤ y < z
e) x = y = z or relation cannot be established
2).x3 – 5x2 – 9x + 45 = 0; y3 + 6y2 – 4y – 24 = 0
c) x ≤ y
d) x ≥ y
e) x = y or relationship cannot be established
3).√(x + 5) + √1024 = √1369; √y(y-5) = √1764 – √1296
c) x ≥ y
d) x ≤ y
e) x = y or relation cannot be established
4).(3x – 2)/y = (3x + 6)/(y + 16)
(x + 2)/(y + 4) = (x + 5)/(y + 10)
c) x ≥ y
d) x ≤ y
e) x = y or relation cannot be established
5).(x – 2)(x + 1) = (x – 1)(x + 3)
(y + 3)(y – 2) = (y + 1)(y + 2)
c) x ≥ y
d) x ≤ y
e) x = y or relation cannot be established
Directions (6 – 10): Study the given table carefully and answer the give questions
Percentage profit or loss is based on the sum of cost price and transportation cost.
6).The percentage profit on Steel is 8%. Then what is its selling price?
a) Rs.18600
b) Rs.12600
c) Rs.16200
d) Rs.16800
e) Rs.14600
7).The selling price of Bricks is what per cent of the cost price of Cement?
8).What is the difference between the selling price of Bricks and that of Glass?
9).What is the approximate difference the loss on Timber to that on Cement?
10).The selling price of glass is what percent of the selling price of glass if loss on Steel is 10%?
1)b 2)e 3)a 4)b 5)a 6)c 7)d 8)b 9)a 10)b
Solutions:
1). B)Solving 1st and 2nd equations, we get x = 217/6 ≈ -36; y = 80/3 ≈ 26
Substituing in 3rd eqn, z = 78
2). E)x3 – 5x2 – 9x + 45 = 0
x2(x – 5) – 9(x – 5) = 0
(x2 – 9)(x – 5) = 0
(x – 3)(x + 3)(x – 5) = 0
x = 3, -3, 5
y3 + 6y2 – 4y – 24 = 0
y2(y + 6) – 4(y + 6) = 0
(y2 – 4)(y + 6) = 0
(y – 2)(y + 2)(y + 6) = 0
y = 2, -2, -6
3). A)√(x + 5) + 32 = 37; √(x + 5) = 5;
Squaring on both sides, (x + 5) = 25
√y(y-5) = 42 – 36; √y(y-5) = 6;
Squaring on both sides, y(y-5) = 36;
Y2 – 5y – 36 = 0; y = +9, -4;
4). B)(3x – 2)/y = (3x + 6)/(y + 16)
y + 16(3x – 2) = y (3x + 16)
48x – 8y = 32
6x – y = 4 —(1)
(x + 2)/(y + 4) = (x + 5)/(y + 10)
(x + 2)(y + 10) = (x + 5)(y + 4)
2x = y —(2)
Substitute (2) in (1),
x = 1, y = 2
5). A)(x – 2)(x + 1) = (x – 1)(x + 3)
X2 + x – 2x – 2 = x2 + 3x – x – 3
(y + 3)(y – 2) = (y +1)(y + 2)
Y2 –2y + 3y – 6 = y2 + 2y
6). C)Cost Price of Steel = Rs.12000
Transportation cost = Rs.3000
Total cost = Rs.15000
Profit = 8%
Selling Price = 15000* 108/100 = Rs.16200
7). D)Selling price of Bricks = Cost Price + Cost of transportation + Profit = 7000 + 2000 + 2000 = 11000
Cost price of Cement = Selling price + Cost of transportation + Profit = 9000 + 1500 + 2000 = 12500
Percentage = 11000*100/12500 = 88%
8). B)Selling price of Bricks = 11000
Selling price of Glass = 7500*107/100 = 8025
Difference = 2975
9). A)Loss on Timber = C.P – S.P = 100*4500/95 – 4500 = 236.84
Loss on Cement = 2000
Difference = 1764
10). B)Selling price of steel = 15000*90/100 = 13500
Selling price of glass = 8025
Percentage = 8025/13500 * 100 = 59.44
