Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Secularising the election"
  • Secularising - when something is secularized, religious influence, power, or control is removed from it
  • Grappled with - to try hard to understand a difficult idea or to solve a difficult problem
  • Canvassing - to try to get political support or votes, especially by visiting all the houses in an area:
  • Rival - a person, group, etc. competing with others for the same thing or in the same area
  • Prohibition - the act of officially not allowing something, or an order that does this
  • Sectarian - (a person) strongly supporting a particular religious group and not willing to accept other beliefs
  • Amended - to make changes to a document, law, agreement etc, especially in order to improve it
  • Gave rise to - to cause something
  • Arena - an activity that involves argument and discussion
  • Ambit - the range or limits of the influence of something
  • Bedrock - the main principles on which something is based
  • Undisputed - if something is undisputed, everyone agrees about it
  • Discredit - to cause people to stop respecting someone
  • Regardless - without being affected or influenced by someone or something
  • Linguistic - relating to languages
  • Dispute - an argument or disagreement
  • Amendment - a change made to a law or agreement
  • Purposive - having a purpose (done with the aim of achieving a particular thing)
  • Interpretation - an explanation or opinion of what something means
  • Legislative - relating to laws or the making of laws
  • Constitutional - allowed by the constitution of a country or organization
  • Ethos - the set of beliefs, ideas, etc. about the social behaviour and relationships of a person or group
  • In the light of something - because of a particular fact
  • Intention - something that you want and plan to do
  • Prohibit -  to officially refuse to allow something
  • Justifiable - if something is justifiable, there is a good reason for it
  • Deprivation - a situation in which you do not have things or conditions that are usually considered necessary for a pleasant life
  • Injustice - an unfair action or event (not treating someone fairly and not respecting their rights)
  • Permissible - allowed to be done by a law or rule
  • Verdict - an official judgment made in a court
  • Resonance - an emotional effect produced by something that reminds you of something else
  • Nuance - a slight difference that may be difficult to notice but is fairly important

  • Nudge - push / move
  • Basis points - used in relation to interest rates to mean one-hundredth of one percent
  • Slowdown - a reduction in speed, activity, or the rate that things are produced
  • Fiscal year - financial year (an year for which a business, government, etc. plans its management of money)
  • Awash - containing a lot or too much of something
  • Impose - to officially force a rule, tax, punishment, etc. to be obeyed or received
  • Curb - a limit on something that is not wanted
  • Taken a knock - to be damaged because of a bad experience
  • In the wake of something - if something happens in the wake of something else, it happens after and often because of it
  • Resultant - caused by the event or situation that you have just mentioned
  • Cash crunch - not having enough money to work successfully or in the normal way
  • Spur - to encourage an activity or development or make it happen faster
  • Decelerated - to happen or make something happen more slowly
  • Witnessed - observed
  • Accelerating - to happen or make something happen sooner or faster
  • Unenviable - difficult and not at all enjoyable
  • Stagnated - to stay the same and not grow or develop
  • Woes - big problems or troubles
  • Mounting - gradually increasing
  • Demonetisation - to officially stop using particular notes or coins, or a particular currency
  • Willy-nilly - if something happens willy-nilly, it happens even if the people who are involved do not want it to happen
  • Ended up - to finally be in a particular place or situation
  • Windfall - an amount of money that you win or receive from someone unexpectedly
  • Potentially - possibly true in the future, but not true now
  • Launch pad - starting point of something
  • Stimulus - something that causes growth or activity
  • Vying - to compete with other people to achieve or get something
  • Innovatively - using new methods or ideas
  • Capitalise - to supply money to a business so that it can develop or operate as it should
  • Enduring - existing for a long time
  • Revival - the process of becoming more active or popular again
  • Appetite - the feeling of wanting or needing something
  • Constraint - something that controls what you do by keeping you within particular limits
  • Substantially - to a large degree
  • Swelled - to become larger
  • Liability - he amount of money that somebody owes
  • Markup - the amount by which the price of something is increased before it is sold again
  • Benchmark - a level of quality that can be used as a standard when comparing other things
  • Consumer - a person who buys goods or services for their own use
  • Fiscal stimulus - an attempt by a government to increase economic activity by reducing taxes, increasing government spending, or both
  • Reinvigorate -  make something stronger, or more exciting or successful again
  • Flagging - becoming weaker
  • Anticipated - expected
