Foundation of world's largest cricket stadium laid in Ahmedabad today :
The foundation of the world's largest cricket stadium in terms of seating capacity has been laid in Ahmedabad. The total cost of the stadium, which will have a seating capacity of around 1.10 lakh, is estimated at Rs.700 crores. The stadium will have 76 corporate boxes, four dressing rooms, a clubhouse and an Olympic-size swimming pool among other facilities.
India ranks 60th in Inclusive Development Index
India has been ranked 60th among 79 developing economies, below China (15), Nepal (27) and Pakistan (52), in World Economic Forum's Inclusive Development Index. Lithuania topped the list of 79 developing countries followed by Azerbaijan and Hungary. IDI is based on 12 performance indicators having three pillars – Growth and Development, Inclusion and Intergenerational Equity, and Sustainability.
On the occasion of MGR's 100th birth anniversary is declared as State holiday : TN
The Tamil Nadu government on Monday declared former CM MG Ramachandran's 100th birth anniversary, January 17, as a public holiday for the state. MGR was the state's CM from 1977 to 1987, and founded the ruling AIADMK in 1972. The Centre has also agreed to release a special postage stamp on MGR's birth centenary, the Tamil Nadu government has said.
25 children got selected including 13 girls for National Bravery Awards
Twenty five children have been selected for the national bravery awards 2016. These include 13 girls. Four of the awards have been given posthumously. The coveted Bharat award has been conferred on 8 year old Late Kumari Tarh Peju of Arunachal Pradesh, who sacrificed her life while saving two of her friends from drowning.
The prestigious Geeta Chopra award has been conferred on 18 year old Tejasweeta Pradhan and 17 year old Shivani Gond of West Bengal who showed immense courage fearlessly helping police and NGO in uncovering an international sex racket leading to the arrest of the mastermind in Delhi.
IIMC to start post graduate course in Urdu journalism in New Delhi
Information and Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu will launch a post graduate course in Urdu journalism at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication in New Delhi tomorrow.
A statement released in New Delhi today said the Executive Council of the IIMC, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, has recently approved the course.
2nd Raisina Dialogue starts today in New Delhi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the 2nd Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi today evening. The Dialogue held annually is India’s flagship geo-political conference organized by External Affairs Ministry in partnership with the Observer Research Foundation.
Within a short span, it has emerged as a much awaited global conference in the international calendar. Strategic issues including new challenges and cyber security will be deliberated during the three day conclave. The Theme of the Dialogue, this year, is The New Normal: Multilateralism with Multi-Polarity.
Tourism minister Govt to organize Bharat Parv at Red Fort from Jan 26
The centre has decided to host the mega-cultural event 'Bharat Parv' from January 26 at Red Fort as part of Republic Day celebrations. Union Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma said in a tweet today that Bharat Parv will be organised from January 26 to 31 at Red Fort.
Last year, the government had organised a similar festival at Red Fort on the occasion of Republic Day and at the Rajpath lawns as part of Independence Day celebrations.
Bhopal : Fine of Rupees 500 per person for open defecation
The Bhopal Nagar Nigam (BNG) has announced that a fine of Rs.500 per person will be levied for open defecation and if not complied, then the whole family will be fined Rs.500 per member. "if labour working for builder is found defecating in open, builder will be fined Rs.10,000; if act is repeated, fine will be doubled," it added.
Annual Yatra 'Amarnath Yatra' to begin on June 29 in J&K
In Jammu and Kashmir, the 40 day long annual 'yatra' to the holy cave shrine of Amarnath in South Kashmir Himalayas will commence on June 29.
An official spokesman said to safeguard the safety and security of pilgrims, the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) has decided that the yatra will start on June 29 and conclude on Shravan Purnima (Raksha Bandhan) on August 7. This year's yatra will be shorter by eight days against last years 48 days.
170th Sadguru Sri Thyagaraja Aaradhana festival celebrated in Tamil Nadu ends today
In Tamil Nadu, the 170th Sadguru Sri Thyagaraja Aaradhana festival at Tiruvaiyaru ends today. The Aaradhana festival which was inaugurated on 13th of this month was a treat to carnatic music lovers.
Sadguru Thyagaraja is one of the great musical trinity alongwith Muthusamy Dikshithar and Shyama Sastrigal. Today is Pusahya Bahula day when Sadguru Sri Thyagaraja attained the lotus feet of Lord Rama in 1847.
Army personnel & their families living in Telangana got series of welfare measures form state govt :
Telangana state government today announced a series of welfare measures for the Army personnel and their families living in the state including creation of a Special Army Welfare Fund. Chief Minister Chandrasekhar Rao announced this in the Assembly today. He said the Special Fund will be provided to the tune of 80 crore rupees annually for the welfare of the Army personnel and their families.
Ministers including the Chief Minister will contribute 25 thousand rupees per annum, while MPs and MLAs from the state will contribute 10 thousand rupees each. The employees will also contribute a day's salary to the Fund.
New tourist train to be launched by North-East Frontial Railways : Assam
In Assam, the North-East Frontial (NF) Railways has announced the launch of Aastha Circuit Tourist Train from Guwahati. The new train would take travellers to a mix of popular pilgrimage destinations across the eastern part of the country at affordable rates.
For the first time, this type of special dedicated tourist train was being originated from NF Railway. The all-inclusive special tourist train will start on February 17. The duration of the tour from Guwahati to Guwahati is six nights and seven days and per person cost for the entire trip is Rs 6,161 only.
Jharkhand state Cabinet approves 7th pay panel recommendations :
Jharkhand government has decided to give the benefit of 7th Pay Commission to the employees of the State government with effect from January 2016. This was decided yesterday evening at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Raghuwar Das.
The new pay scale will benefit two lakh 29 thousands employees of the state government and will bring additional expenditure of 2500 crores annually.
Diploma course for sports training to be launched by Unoin Sports Ministry :
Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has decided to launch diploma course for sports training in SAI centre of Rohtak on the pattern of Patiala.
Union Minister of State of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mr. Vijay Goel announced this at the closing ceremony of the 21st National Youth Festival-2017 in Rohtak today.
India becomes Associate Member State of CERN officially :
India on Monday officially became an associate member of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN), deemed as the world's largest nuclear and particle physics laboratory. Indian scientists played a significant role at CERN including the construction of the Large Hadron Collider, which helped confirm the Higgs boson. The membership would cost India approximately Rs.78 crore per year.

India growth forecast reduced from 7.6% to 6.6% on note ban : IMF
The International Monetary Fund on Monday cut India’s growth forecast for the current fiscal to 6.6% from its previous estimate of 7.6%. The cut is a consequence of the currency crunch following the demonetisation decision, said the IMF. The cut in India’s growth rates comes days after the World Bank decelerated India’s GDP growth for 2016-17 to 7% from 7.6%.
Venezuela govt debuts new banknotes amid soaring inflation
In Venezuela, people are standing in long ATM lines to take out new, larger-denominated bills.
President Nicolas Maduro last month said he was scrapping circulation of the most-used 100-bolivar note and replacing it with new bills ranging from 500 to 20,000 bolivars. Maduro hopes larger-denominated bills will help stabilise the crisis-wracked economy.
New president to be elected today for european parliament :
The European Parliament will elect a new president today in a vote that promises to be stormy after a coalition aimed at keeping eurosceptics out of power broke down. The winner will replace Germany's Martin Schulz, who during five years in office made the role far more powerful and prominent than it had ever been before. The new president will lead the EU's only elected body, which will have the final say on a Brexit deal expected in two years time.

ATM withdrawal limit raised to Rs.10,000 from Rs.4,500 a day : RBI
The Reserve Bank of India on Monday raised the withdrawal limit from ATMs to Rs.10,000 per day from the existing Rs.4,500 per day per card with immediate effect. Further, the limit on withdrawal from current accounts has also been enhanced to Rs.1 lakh per week from the existing limit of Rs.50,000 per week.
Greenpeace accused HSBC bank for funding Indonesian forest destruction :
Greenpeace today accused banking giant HSBC of helping to arrange billions of dollars in financing for companies whose palm oil operations have been blamed for destroying vast swathes of Indonesian rainforest.
The environmental group said the British bank had broken its own guidelines which ban supporting palm oil companies involved in unsustainable practices as it was part of syndicates that had arranged USD 16.3 billion of loans since 2012. The activists said in a new report, that the bank was also involved in arranging nearly USD 2 billion of corporate bonds.

GST roll-out date altered from April 1 to July 1, says FM Jaitley
The government on Monday deferred rolling out the GST regime to July 1, 2017, during a meeting of the GST Council led by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. The government earlier set April 1 as the GST roll-out deadline. The Council has remained deadlocked with states seeking sole powers to control assessees with an annual turnover of up to Rs.1.5 crore.
WPI inflation rises from 3.15 to 3.39 per cent in December
Breaking a 3-month declining trend, wholesale inflation rose to 3.39 per cent in December 2016. The increase was mainly due to a rise in prices of manufactured items, even as food articles turned cheaper. Wholesale price index-based inflation had stood at 3.15 per cent in November 2016, and minus 1.06 per cent in December 2015.
DRDO partnership with Pvt industry will enhance defence exports: Parrikar
Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar today said the synergy between private industry and the state- owned Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) will help the country in enhancing exports of defence products.
Parrikar said this after visiting DRDO’s Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Complex in Hyderabad today. He said partnership between DRDO and industries is transforming our country into a global defence manufacturing hub.

Scientist develops world's lightest watch created using graphene
Scientists have developed the world's lightest high-performance mechanical watch made using the 'wonder material' graphene and weighing just 40 grammes. The RM 50-03 watch was made using a unique composite incorporating graphene to manufacture a strong but lightweight new case to house the delicate watch mechanism.

India and World Bank Signs Financing Agreement of $48 million for Nagaland Health Project
India has signed a financing agreement with World Bank for 48 million dollars for Nagaland Health Project. About six lakh people will directly benefit from the Health Project with improvements in higher-level facilities as well as system-wide investments.
The objective of the project is to improve health services in Nagaland. Communities in targeted locations will benefit from project activities at the community and health facility levels.

In 6th Nation’s Cup, India’s women boxing team finishes 3rd place :
The Indian women's boxing team secured a historic third place finish in the 6th Nation's Cup in Serbia. India finished the tournament with one gold, four silver and a bronze medal. The gold medal was won by Haryana-girl Neeraj in the 51kg category, who defeated Kazakhstan's Jaina Shekerbekova in the final. Russia finished second in the tournament behind winners Kazakhstan.
Eugene Cernan the last man to walk on Moon, passes away at 82 :
Eugene Cernan, the last man to walk on Moon, passed away aged 82 on Monday. An American astronaut and a retired Naval officer, Cernan landed on Moon in December 1972 during NASA's Apollo 17 mission. It became the longest lunar landing flight of 301 hours and 51 minutes and made Cernan the eleventh person to land on Moon.
Renowned film actress Geeta Sen passes away at 86 :
Veteran film and stage actor Gita Sen, wife of film maker Mrinal Sen, died in Kolkata today. She was 86. Sen had been suffering from old age-related ailments .
Sen had acted in several films including 'Kolkata 71' and 'Akaler Sandhane'. She had also been part of the theatre movement. Film and theatre personalities visited the residence of Sens and consoled Mrinal Sen (93) who is also ailing.
