Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "A reform at risk"
  • Reform - a change that is intended to correct a situation that is wrong or unfair, or make a system work more effectively
  • At risk - in a situation in which something unpleasant or dangerous could happen to you
  • Keping his fingers crossed - to hope strongly that something (good) will happen
  • Sticking to something - if you stick to a law, rule, or promise, you obey it or do what it states
  • Regime - a system of rules that control something
  • Consensus - agreement among all the people involved
  • Legislation - a law, or a set of laws
  • Rollout - a rollout of proposals, laws, or information is the first time they are made known to the public
  • Impasse - a situation in which progress is impossible, especially because the people involved cannot agree
  • Vertically - involving different levels in an organization
  • Administrative - relating to the management of a company, organization, or institution
  • Keen - very interested, eager, or wanting (to do) something very much
  • Retain - to keep or continue to have something
  • Turnover - the amount of business that a company does in a period of time
  • On account of - because of
  • Compensation - something that changes or removes the bad result of something
  • Rapprochement - an agreement reached by opposing groups or people
  • Generous - willing to give money, help, kindness, etc., especially more than is usual or expected
  • Resort - the fact that you have to do something because there is no other way of achieving something
  • Forge - to make or produce something
  • Unanimous - a unanimous decision, vote, agreement etc is one that everyone agrees with and supports
  • Crisis - an extremely difficult or dangerous situation
  • Stalling - stopping
  • Proceedings - a series of events that happen in a planned and controlled way
  • Tricky - difficult to deal with
  • Nod - approval
  • Kick in - to start to have an effect or to happen
  • Big-ticket - expensive
  • Bring on board - to make people agree for an idea intended by the leader
  • Taxman - the government department that is responsible for collecting taxes
  • Resist - to stop yourself from doing something that you would very much like to do
  • Derail - to prevent something from continuing in the way that it was planned
  • For instance - for example
  • Profiteering - the activity of taking unfair advantage of a situation to make a large profit, often by selling goods that are difficult to get at a very high price
  • Deemed - to consider or judge something in a particular way
  • Discretion - the right or ability to make a judgment or decision

  • Walks a tightrope - to deal with a difficult situation
  • Draws to a close - to slowly finish / come to an end
  • Resurgent - quickly becoming popular, important, or successful again
  • Give pause - to cause someone to stop and think about what they were doing or intending to do
  • Resoundingly - completely
  • Referendum - a vote in which all the people in a country or an area are asked to give their opinion about or decide an important political or social question
  • Constitution - the set of political principles by which a state or organization is governed
  • Seized upon something - to use, accept, or take advantage of something quickly or enthusiastically
  • Establishment - the important and powerful people who control a country or an organization
  • Defies - to refuse to obey someone or something
  • Narrative - a particular way of explaining or understanding events
  • Populist - representing or relating to the ideas and opinions of ordinary people
  • Revolt - if a large number of people revolt, they refuse to be controlled or ruled, and take action against authority, often violent action
  • Globalisation - the increase of trade around the world, especially by large companies producing and trading goods in many different countries
  • Elite - the richest, most powerful, best-educated, or best-trained group in a society
  • Elsewhere - in or to another place or other places
  • Touched upon something - to mention a subject quickly when speaking or writing about another subject
  • Burning issue - something that people have strong opinions about and think is very important
  • Immigration - the process in which people enter a country in order to live there permanently
  • Writ - an official document that tells someone to do something or to stop doing something
  • Thrashed out - to discuss something until you find a solution or reach an agreement
  • Altering - to make something or someone different
  • Despite - without taking any notice of or being influenced by; not prevented by
  • Outcome - a result or effect of an action, situation, etc
  • Being at odds - to disagree
  • Surge - a sudden increase in something such as price, value, or interest
  • Bitter - involving very angry feelings
  • Polarisation - to form two very different groups, opinions, or situations that are completely opposite to each other, or to cause this to happen
  • Electorate - all the people who are allowed to vote in an election
  • Indelible - permanent
  • Rhetoric - speech or writing intended to be effective and influence people
  • Flip side - the opposite, less good, or less popular side of something
  • Stoutly - in a strong and determined way
  • Imperative - extremely important and urgent
