  • Gain - to get or achieve something, usually as a result of a lot of effort
  • Demonetisation - to officially stop using particular notes or coins, or a particular currency
  • Hoarding - to collect large amounts of something and keep it in a safe, often secret, place
  • Implicated - to show or suggest that someone is involved in something illegal or morally wrong
  • Baron - a powerful person in a particular type of business

  • Premises - the land and buildings owned by someone
  • Seizure -  the action of taking something by force or with legal authority
  • High-profile - often seen in public, mentioned in newspapers, or appearing on television
  • Enforcement - the process of making sure that people obey a law or rule
  • Grapple with - to try hard to understand a difficult idea or to solve a difficult problem
  • Stockpiles - to store a large supply of something for future use
  • Ill-gotten - dishonestly obtained
  • Unscrupulous - behaving in a way that is dishonest or unfair in order to get what you want
  • Conspired - to plan secretly with other people to do something bad, illegal
  • Black marketeer - someone involved in illegal trade in products that are difficult or expensive to buy legally
  • Phenomenon - an event or situation that can be seen to happen or exist
  • Come to light - if facts come to light, they become known publicly
  • Flaw - a fault, mistake, or weakness, especially one that happens while something is being planned or made, or that causes something not to be perfect
  • Money-launderers - people who move money that has been obtained illegally through banks and other businesses to make it seem as if the money has been obtained legally
  • Proverbial - well known
  • Under-the-radar (idiom) - doing something without other people noticing
  • Significant - important or noticeable
  • Unearthing - to discover something or someone that was not known before or that people had kept secret, especially by searching very thoroughly
  • Intensify - to become greater, more serious, or more extreme

  • Crisis - a time of great disagreement, confusion, or suffering
  • Dressing down - an act of speaking angrily to someone because they have done something wrong
  • Erosion - the fact of a good quality or situation being gradually lost or destroyed
  • Conservative - not willing to accept much change, especially in the traditional values of society
  • Tinkered - to make small changes to something
  • Undermined - to make something or someone become gradually less effective, confident, or successful
  • Democracy - a system of government in which people vote in elections to choose the people who will govern them (freedom and equality between people)
  • Progressively - developing or happening gradually
  • Running out - getting over (completely finished)
  • Eventually - at the end of a process or period of time in which many things happen
  • Strip - to remove something
  • Unprecedented - never having happened or existed in the past
  • Grave - so serious that you feel worried
  • Judiciary - the part of a country's government that is responsible for its legal system, including all the judges in the country's courts
  • Tribunal - a special court or group of people who are officially chosen, especially by the government, to examine (legal) problems of a particular type
  • Outgoing - leaving a job
  • Alleged - to say that someone has done something illegal or wrong without giving proof
  • Loyalist - a person or group that strongly supports the government or ruler in power
  • Abortion - a medical operation in which a developing baby is removed from a woman’s body so that it is not born alive
  • Rolled back - to stop or withdraw something
  • Widespread - happening or existing in many places, or affecting many people
  • Campaign - a planned group of especially political, business, or military activities that are intended to achieve a particular aim
  • Protest - to disagree strongly with something, often by making a formal statement or taking action in public
  • Preventing - to stop something from happening
  • Anteroom - a small room, especially a waiting room, that leads into a larger, more important room
  • Populist - representing the interests and opinions of ordinary people
  • Ousting - to force someone to leave a position of power, job, place, or competition
  • Aid - help or support
  • Benign - pleasant and kind
  • Chaos - a state of total confusion with no order
  • Unrest - disagreements or fighting between different groups of people
  • Unmoved - not feeling any emotion, especially feeling no sympathy or sadness when other people would expect you to
  • Tread carefully - to speak or behave carefully to avoid upsetting or causing offence to anyone
