i). State-owned power producer National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and aluminium producer National Aluminium Co. Ltd (NALCO) have signed MoU to establish a 2.4 giga watt (GW) Coal based power project at Gajmara, Odisha.
ii). The MoU will facilitate setting up of a Joint Venture (JV) Company between NTPC and NALCO. It also seeks to set up one million tonnealuminium production facility in Odisha.
Rajasthan launches Amma canteen-type meal scheme
i). On the lines of Amma canteens, Rajasthan government has launched a subsidised meal scheme in which the poor and the needy will get breakfast for Rs 5 and lunch or dinner for Rs 8.
ii). Annapurna Rasoi was launched by Chief Minister VasundharaRaje at the Jaipur Municipal Corporation campus yesterday by feeding a Dalit and a Gurjar woman.
iii). The scheme will be in 12 cities initially and introduced across the state later.Breakfast will include Poha, Upma, Sevaiyan, IdliSambhar, JwarKhichda, BazraKhichada etc. while one can have Dal-chawal, Churma, Dal-dhokli and other items for lunch or dinner.
PimpriBudruk in Pune district declared cashless village
i). The Centre for Good Governance under the Union Ministry of Corporate Affairs has declared that PimpriBudruk in Pune district as a cashless village. This is first cashless village in the district.
ii). From students to senior citizens, each of the eligible members of the village PimpariBudruk from Khedtahasil of Pune District has an account with the bank, where every transaction is being done through mobile banking.
iii). All the villagers have been trained by the bank officials and volunteers of Centre for Good Governance. Since there is no requirement of internet for mobile banking, currently everyone has opted for the same.
Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana comes into effect today
i). The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY) comes into effect today. Any unaccounted cash or deposit in a bank account can be disclosed under the scheme before April 1, 2017. The PMKGY provides for 50 per cent tax and surcharge on declarations of unaccounted cash deposited in banks.
ii). Briefing reporters in New Delhi yesterday, Revenue Secretary HasmukhAdhia said, declaration of undisclosed income under it can be made by any person in the form of cash or deposits in an account with bank or post office or a specified entity.
iii). The scheme will continue till 31st of March next year. He said, the money generated from disclosure of unaccounted cash will be used for this yojana. He said, declarations under new black money disclosure scheme will be kept confidential.
INTERNATIONAL:
UK becomes first country to approve three-parent babies
i). Britain has become the first country in the world to legally offer "three-parent baby" fertility treatments after regulators gave the green light.
ii). The technique, which uses DNA from two women and a man, would allow mothers who carry disease-causing mutations in their mitochondrial genes to give birth to children free of the illness.
India, Tajikistan sign four agreements to enhance bilateral cooperation
i). India and Tajikistan signed four agreements today in areas including on double taxation, money laundering and counter-terrorism. Prime Minister NarendraModi and visiting President of Tajikistan EmomaliRahmon witnessed the exchange of MoUs in New Delhi following delegation level talks.
ii). MrModi said that they agreed to increase the scope and scale of economic engagement especially in the areas of trade and investment. The Prime Minister assereted that hydel-power, Information Technology, pharmaceuticals and health care are priority areas.
iii). President Rahmon said Tajikistan is determined to upgrade its relations with India with emphasis on trade and investment. He also invited Indian companies in Tajikistan's plans to build small and medium sized hydel power stations. He said that he discussed with MrModi about strengthening of bilateral cooperation in areas of defence and security.
BUSINESS AND ECONOMY NEWS:
India's foreign exchange reserves down by USD 887.2 mn to USD 362.987 bn
i). India's foreign exchange reserves declined by 887.2 million dollars to 362.987 billion dollars in the week ended 9th December. A RBI press release has informed that foreign currency assets, a major part of the overall reserves fell by 873 million dollars to 339.258 billion dollars. In the previous week too, the reserves had declined by 1.431 billion dollars to 363.874 billion dollars.
ii). Gold reserves remained steady at 19.982 billion dollars. India's special drawing rights with the International Monetary Fund decreased by 5.4 million dollars to 1.438 billion dollars, while the country's reserve position also dipped by 8.8 million dollars to 2.307 billion dollars.
APPOINTMENTS:
Rahil Ansari appointed as new head of Audi India
i). Thierry Lespiaucq was appointed as interim head of Audi India in October this year. He had replaced Joe King who had assumed a new role at Audi AG. Now the luxury carmaker has appointed Rahil Ansari as the new head of its business in India. Audi India has also stated that Rahil will assume his new role from February 01, 2017.
ii). Prior to this new appointment, Rahil was the head of global pricing for Audi genuine parts at Audi AG. His new role will see him move back to Audi India from Audi AG. Rahil has previously held the position of director of network development at Audi India. He has a wide range of experience across finance, sales, network development, retail operations and aftersales divisions.
SaurabhVarma appointed as Publicis Communications' India CEO
i). Publicis Communications announces the appointment of SaurabhVarma as CEO of Publicis Communications India.
ii). Varma’s appointment comes on top of his existing responsibilities as CEO of Leo Burnett’s South Asia operations, and he will be based in Mumbai.
iii). Varma was appointed CEO of Leo Burnett India in 2013 and a year later was elevated to a South Asia role.
iv). He has about 20 years of industry experience, seven of which were spent as Chief Strategy Officer for South Asia, in Singapore.

i). ISRO chairman A S Kiran Kumar will be presented award for Science & Technology category.
ii). Mahrashtra Chief Minister DevendraFadnavis will be presented award for Public Leadership.
iii). Hari Katha exponent Kamala Murthy presented in with this award in Social Thinkers, Philosophers and PravachanaKarthas category.
iv). John Marr will be felicitated for his work in the International category. He is a scholar in Sanskrit, Tamil and Telugu. He has been teaching Carnatic music theory for 30 years in England.
Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation awarded Digital India Silver Award
i). The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation in Tamil Nadu has been selected for Digital India Silver Award instituted by the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
ii). It will receive award in the category of “Most Innovative Citizen Engagement” and also for installing and implementing free WiFi Scheme in its various offices.
iii). The award was instituted for leveraging use of Information and Communication Technology to solicit active engagement of public in the process of governance.
Karnataka VikasGrameena Bank (KVGB) has bagged two awards
i). The Dharwad-headquartered Karnataka VikasGrameena Bank (KVGB) has bagged two awards for inclusive insurance from Skoch Group for 2016, according to a press release here.
ii). The bank bagged the awards in life insurance and micro insurance sectors under the order of merit category. The release said KVGB Chairman S Ravindran received the award from Sameer Kochhar, Chairman of Skoch Group during the 46th Skoch Summit in New Delhi on Friday.
BEML CMD gets CEPM Fellowship Award-2016
i). Public sector defence establishment BEML Ltd on Friday said that its Chairman &Manaing Director Deepak Kumar Hota received the CEPM Fellowship Award-2016 at the 24th Global Symposium organised by Centre for Excellence in Project Management.
ii). In a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange the company said “Deepak Kumar Hota Chairman &Manaing Director BEML Limited a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence has been conferred with CEPM Fellowship Award-2016 at the 24th Global Symposium organised by Centre for Excellence in Project Management.”
iii) The award was presented to Hota by Amitabh Kant CEO NITI Aayog at the function held at Delhi.
Bharatanatyam guru receives Nadhabrahmam title
i). Bharatanatyam guru K. KalyanaSundaram, director, Sri Rajarajeswari Bharathi Natya Kala Mandir, Mumbai, was conferred the title of Nadhabrahmam at the inauguration of Narada Gana Sabha’s Isai Natya Nataka Vizha.
ii) The sabha also presented Senior Musician award to renowned vocalist SugunaVaradachari and Tirunelveli P. SubramaniaIyer Award to Thavilvidwan Thirupungur T.G. Muthukumarasamy.
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY:
Indian Navy’s eight landing craft utility L-58 launched by GRSE
i). Indian Navy’s eight landing craft utility (LCU) L-58 was launched by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) in Kolkata, West Bengal.
ii). It is the last vessel in a series of eight ships of LCU MK-IV project designed and built by GRSE for the Indian Navy. It was launched by NeelamPratap Singh Rudy, wife of Union minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy.
