Hello everyone, in our Lesson 57, we learnt about the prefixes Pro, Por,PurPro, Por, Pur represent the meanings forward; forthToday we shall see the prefix proto. Happy Reading :)

Day 58 : Proto

  • Proto - first; original
Let's try to understand this with some examples
  • protocol (noun) = a glued-on descriptive first leaf of a manuscript
    • proto (protos) - Prefix = first
    • col (kola) - Root = glue
  • protoplasm (noun) = living matter, the physical basis of life
    • proto - Prefix = first
    • plasm (plassein) - Root = to form ; to shape
Let's have a look at some more words with prefixes, for better understanding.
  • proto-hitoric = belonging to the earlier age of history
  • prototype = the first design of something from which other forms are copied
  • protomorphic = existing at or from the beginning of the world
  • proton = a type of elementary particle (= a very small piece of matter) with a positive electrical charge that is found in the nucleus of all atoms
  • protozoan = a very small living thing made up of only one cell
  • protoplast = the protoplasm of a living plant or bacterial cell whose cell wall has been removed
  • prototypical =  very typical as an example of a particular thing
