Let's try to understand this with some examples
- protocol (noun) = a glued-on descriptive first leaf of a manuscript

- col (kola) - Root = glue
- protoplasm (noun) = living matter, the physical basis of life

- plasm (plassein) - Root = to form ; to shape
Let's have a look at some more words with prefixes, for better understanding.
- proto-hitoric = belonging to the earlier age of history
- prototype = the first design of something from which other forms are copied
- protomorphic = existing at or from the beginning of the world
- proton = a type of elementary particle (= a very small piece of matter) with a positive electrical charge that is found in the nucleus of all atoms
- protozoan = a very small living thing made up of only one cell
- protoplast = the protoplasm of a living plant or bacterial cell whose cell wall has been removed
- prototypical = very typical as an example of a particular thing
