  • Alliance - a group of countries, political parties, or people who have agreed to work together because of shared interests or aims
  • Stared down - to pressure someone
  • Resurgent - increasing again, or becoming popular again

  • Rife - if something unpleasant is rife, it is very common or happens a lot
  • Buzz - the feeling of excitement
  • Strategist - someone with a lot of skill and experience in planning
  • Festivity - a happy feeling that people get when they celebrate a special event
  • Assembled - to bring together for a particular purpose
  • Fellow-traveller - someone who supports a political party, but is not a member of it
  • Secular - not religious, or not connected with religion
  • Significant - very important
  • Enigmatic - mysterious and difficult to understand
  • Tight-lipped - refusing to comment on something
  • Uninhibited - free and natural, without embarrassment or too much control
  • Fungible - easy to exchange or trade for something else of the same type and value
  • Essentially - necessarily (needed)
  • Strike the best deal - to reach an agreement
  • Also-ran - someone who is not successful, especially someone who loses an election or competition
  • Optimistic - based on beliefs that are too confident
  • Projection - a calculation or guess about the future based on information that you have
  • Opponents - people who are competing against you
  • Buried - to stop yourself from having a feeling or memory by not allowing yourself to think about it
  • Embrace - to include something, often as one of a number of things
  • Formidable - causing you to have fear or respect for something or someone because that thing or person is large, powerful, or difficult
  • Feud - an angry disagreement between two people or groups that continues for a long time

  • Paddy - a field of rice growing in water
  • Livestock - animals such as cows, sheep, and pigs that are kept on farms
  • Compost - decaying plant material that is added to soil to improve its quality
  • Biofuel - a fuel that is made from living things or their waste
  • Substrate - the material that a plant or an animal that does not move much feeds on or uses as support

  • Molasses - a thick, dark brown liquid that is produced during the process of making sugar, used in cooking
  • Legume - a seed such as a pea or bean that grows in a pod

  • Fleet - a number of buses, aircraft, etc. under the control of one organization
  • Augment - to increase the size or value of something by adding something to it
  • Efficiency - the ability to work well and produce good results by using the available time, money, supplies etc in the most effective way
  • Crisis - a time of great disagreement, confusion, or suffering
  • Sustained - continuing at the same level or rate for a long time
