Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Tight race in a divided country"
  • Guffawed - laughed very loudly
  • Nail-biting - a nail-biting situation makes you very excited or worried
  • Campaign - a series of actions intended to produce political or social change
  • Nominee - someone who has been nominated for something (job or prize)
  • Stemming from something - to be caused by something
  • Boasting - to proudly tell other people about what you have done or can do
  • Groping - to touch someone sexually in a rough way, especially someone who does not want to be touched
  • Consent - permission to do something
  • Plummeted - fell straight down very quickly from a high position
  • Alleged - to say that someone has done something illegal or wrong without giving proof
  • Assault - to attack someone violently
  • Game changer - someone or something that completely changes the way that something is done
  • Correspondence - the process of writing and receiving mails
  • Estranged husband - an estranged husband or wife is no longer living with their partner
  • Aide - a person whose job is to help someone important, such as a member of a government or a military officer of high rank
  • Undercurrent - an emotion, belief, or characteristic of a situation that is hidden and usually negative or dangerous but that has some effect
  • Vicious - extremely violent

  • Parsed - examined / resolved
  • Overwhelming - very great or very large
  • Statesman - an experienced politician, especially one who is respected for making good judgments
  • Poise - a controlled and relaxed way of behaving, even in difficult situations
  • Debate - a discussion in which people or groups state different opinions about a subject
  • Unearth - to discover something that was not known before
  • Evidence -  one or more reasons for believing that something is or is not true
  • Criminality - the criminal quality of someone or something
  • Perception - a particular way of understanding or thinking about something
  • Untrustworthiness - the quality of not being able to be trusted
  • Proximity - the state of being near in space or time
  • Deep-pocketed - a deep-pocketed person or organization has a lot of money to spend
  • Hard line - to deal with someone or something in a very strong or strict way and refuse to change your opinion or decision
  • Fiscal - financially
  • Expansive - friendly

  • Tone down - to make something less severe, shocking, or offensive
  • Abrasive - behaving in way that seems rude to other people, because you say what you think even if it is not nice
  • Rhetoric - a style of speaking or writing that is intended to influence people
  • Latino - a citizen of the US whose family was originally from Mexico, Central America, or South America
  • Differently abled - disabled
  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Backlash - a strong, negative, and often angry reaction to something that has happened
  • Demographics - relating to the study of populations and the different groups that make them up
  • Alienation - to cause someone or a group of people to stop supporting and agreeing with you
  • Mainstream - considered ordinary or normal and accepted or used by most people
  • Hurled - to shout at someone in a very angry way
  • Defiance - refusal to obey a person or rule
  • In the teeth of something - despite something such as problems or difficulties
  • Brazen - behaving in a way that is not moral or socially acceptable
  • Allegation - a statement that someone has done something wrong or illegal even though this has not been proved
  • Shadowy - mysterious and secret
  • Feverish - extremely excited
  • Campaigning - to try to win an election
  • With a bang - in a very exciting or successful way
  • Groan - to speak about something in a way that shows you are unhappy
  • Bitterly - in a way that shows that you are extremely angry, upset, or disappointed about something
  • Polarised - to form two very different groups, opinions, or situations that are completely opposite to each other, or to cause this to happen
  • Initiate - to cause something to begin
  • Reconciling - to find a way in which two situations or beliefs that are opposed to each other can agree and exist together
  • Mores - the traditional practices and moral values of a particular society or group of people
  • Diminished - reduced in amount, size, or importance

  • Enveloping - to surround someone or something completely
  • Disconnect - a situation in which two or more things are not connected in the way that they should be

  • Impact - an effect, or an influence
  • Particulate - an extremely small piece of dirt, especially one produced by road vehicles, that causes pollution
  • Pollutant - a substance that is harmful to the environment
  • Prohibition -  a law or rule that stops people from doing something
  • Paddy straw - the dried, yellow stems of crops such as rice
  • Initiative - a new plan or process to achieve something or solve a problem
  • Biomass - dead plant and animal material suitable for using as fuel
  • Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
  • Residue - the part of something that remains after the rest has gone or ended
  • Surplus - more of something than is necessary
  • Straw -  the yellow stems of dried crops such as wheat
  • Depriving - if you deprive someone of something, you take it away from them or prevent them from having it
  • Cropland - land used for growing crops (plants grown for food)
  • Nutrient - a substance in food that plants, animals, and people need to live and grow
  • Irony - a situation in which something which was intended to have a particular result has the opposite or a very different result

  • Monsoon - the season of heavy rain during the summer in hot Asian countries
  • Partly - to some degree, but not completely
  • Fodder - food that is given to cows, horses, and other farm animals
  • Productively - in a way that produces positive results or a larger quantity of something
  • Pilot projects - new projects
  • Mechanise - to use a machine to do something that used to be done by hand
  • Composting - to add decaying plant material to soil to improve its quality
  • Scaled up - to make something larger in size, amount etc than it used to be
  • Liberal - willing to respect or accept behaviour or opinions different from one's own; open to new ideas
  • Deploy - to use something in an effective way
  • Abatement - a reduction in something harmful or unpleasant
  • Conservation - the management of land and water in ways that prevent it from being damaged or destroyed
  • Low-till - an agricultural planting practice
  • Residue - the part that is left after the main part has gone or been taken away
  • Curb - to control or limit something that is harmful
  • Inevitable - impossible to avoid or prevent
  • Premature - happening too soon or before the usual time
